Hello, LibraryPix. I too would like to welcome you to Wikipedia in general and the reference desks in particular.
Consumed Crustacean already linked you to the reference desk guidelines. For a more practical idea of how it "works", you might wish to browse through the desks and some of their archives.
Apart from helping out querents and trying to answer their questions, ideally, we also try to use the fruit of our research for direct improvement of the encyclopedia's content, by enhancing and correcting the corresponding articles, or even by creating new ones. There is even a project dedicated to this goal: Reference Desk Article Collaboration, but most editors do this on their own or in ad hoc collaboration.
In any event, I would like to amplify Edison's reply to your question: we are very happy to welcome professional librarians at the desks. If you like helping out here, you might also consider adding your name to this list of reference desk "regulars".
If you have any further questions, you can always contact me or Edison (who is an administrator) or ask at the reference desk's talk page. I am looking forward to your contributions. ---Sluzzelin talk 15:16, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
