Managing conflict of interest (Saratoga)[edit]

Although everyone is welcome to contribute to Wikipedia, it's important to be mindful of the feelings of your fellow editors, who may be frustrated by certain types of interaction, such as your addition to List of TCP and UDP ports. While you probably didn't intend any offense, please do remember that Wikipedia strives to be an inclusive atmosphere. I have no idea who 80.221.152.17 is - but that person seems unfamiliar with technical aspects of computer networking, with the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority being, you know, an actual authority, or with the irony of raising conflict of interest issues while hiding behind an anonymous account to hide any conflict of interest issues and throwing boilerplate around. As I said to the person who first added Saratoga to that page and got me involved, Wikipedia isn't worth his time.

Please do not attack other editors, as you did at List of TCP and UDP port numbers. Comment on content, not on contributors. Personal attacks damage the community and deter users. Please stay cool and keep this in mind while editing. I feel like Special:Diff/772446740 suggests you're still using Wikipedia:Passive aggression towards me.

For what it's worth, I did check the reference you mentioned in the edit summary before saving. I searched for Saratoga: A Convergence Layer for Delay Tolerant Networking and couldn't find the IETF draft draft-wood-tsvwg-saratoga I wanted. Thank you for referencing it now; I'll convert it to Template:Cite IETF format soon.

I believe myself to have a good understanding of RFCs and Internet drafts, so please take the time to let me understand better next time. I also acknowledge IANA to be the authorative source, however I also take WP:CSC into consideration. Regarding my previous edits which removed Saratoga from the list, to date my web search result for Saratoga doesn't have a search result for the file transfer protocol on first three search result pages. I'm not going to bother with commenting on the talk page of a floating IP address. Get an account. This page is stable, at least. Your comments on the talk pages of other anonymous IP-address contributors aren't being read - so your removal of the original mention was seen as quite passive-aggressive by a first-time contributor who will never contribute to Wikipedia again, and who has never seen the comment on his talk page. Good job. (and your repeated boilerplate and lawyering? Also passive-aggressive, and probably heavily bot/script automated, given all the imo pointless reference work you're doing. Careful reference work, yes, in whatever citing style is current for Wikipedia, yes, but rather overdone. Especially since IANA is the authority in this case.)

If it's got an IANA reference, there's got to be IETF or IRTF documentation - so you search on IETF Saratoga. IANA is authoritative here, just as IEEE is authoritative for Ethernet standards. That the page is missing things IANA includes is... well, pointless, as are the random references to things that are informally documented at best but not in IANA. IANA is maintained by professionals, and because the Internet needs that list to function, getting an allocation is some work. (While this page was described to me as "The wikipedia page isn't so much a mirror of the IANA registry as it is a circus funhouse mirror version of it.")

Saratoga started in the IRTF as draft-wood-dtnrg-saratoga, which still exists, before moving the bulk of protocol mechanism to tsvwg as more appropriate. A good way to understand RFCs and internet-drafts is to write a couple; the process is rather different to Wikipedia.
