Cosmic Clock

Hi, I hope you don't mind me asking you about something not directly wikipedia related. I was reading the talk page for Graham's number (which is possibly even more interesting than the article itself!), and I followed the link in one of your comments to your website page "An Infinite Number of Monkeys" wherein you describe a 'cosmic clock' comprising a series of granite spheres and a bird. I was uncertain about something: as you describe it, the bird erodes the first sphere (the 'ones' sphere) until it's completely worn away, and then moves on to take a swipe at the next sphere (the 'tens' sphere). Would I be correct in assuming that this means that the bird only takes ONE swipe at the 'tens' sphere, before the 'ones' sphere is replaced, and the bird then goes back to eroding the 'ones' sphere - i.e. it one takes a single swipe at the 'tens' sphere each time it has completely eroded the 'ones' sphere? The article made it sound like the bird possibly erodes the first sphere, then the second, then the third, etc. - but this doesn't tie in with your description of the concept of the clock working like an odometer. Sorry if I'm just being a bit dumb here! It was a really well written article and a brilliant metaphor. AliasMe (talk) 03:52, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

Yes, the blocks are like the digits in an odometer. So once the "ones" digit is gone, it is replaced with a new one (i.e., a "zero" digit), and we "carry" with a single swipe on the "tens" digit. At the next tick, the "ones" digit is swiped again, continuing the whole process. I suppose I could have written it to be a bit clearer. Thanks for the feedback. — Loadmaster (talk) 19:00, 5 January 2010 (UTC)
A tag has been placed on Switched-On Bach 2000 requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, a rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content. You may wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Soylent Green image

I see that you removed the image File:SolyentGreen28d.png from the Soylent Green article. What is it about the image that does not meet the fair use criteria? As far as I can tell, it meets the WP requirements you cited (specifically items (1), (3), and (8)), unless you have a freely available replacement image in mind. — Loadmaster (talk) 20:57, 1 February 2010 (UTC)

The image illustrates the wafers as described in the film, but its use within the article is decorative. We usually do not include non-free images in the plot to support the information there. Rather, non-free screenshots are better used for sections such as the themes, critical reception, or production section of the article. There needs to be critical commentary within the article specifically talking about the image in order to include its use. For examples of non-free images that meet the criteria, see some of the recent FAs such as Changeling, Star Trek: First Contact, Tropic Thunder, or Fight Club. If you need further clarification, please let me know. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 00:37, 2 February 2010 (UTC)

Signpost Article

Hi Loadmaster. WikiProject Report would like to focus on WikiProject Java for a Signpost article to be published February 22. This is an excellent opportunity to draw attention to your efforts and attract new members to the project. Would you be willing to participate in an interview? -Mabeenot (talk) 20:29, 13 February 2010 (UTC)

Sounds interesting. What sort of questions are going to be asked? — Loadmaster (talk) 16:51, 15 February 2010 (UTC)
The interview questions can be found here. Answer as many as you feel comfortable answering. If there is anything else you'd like mentioned in the article, feel free to leave a note at the bottom of the interview page. Thanks for participating in the WikiProject Report interview. -Mabeenot (talk) 00:29, 16 February 2010 (UTC)

Java WikiProject and Portal

Hi again David. Time passes by, and I see that your last meaningful contribution to this project seems to date back from more than 3 months ago... Not to be pushy, but as a charter member, and a guy interested in Java, wouldn't you like to get more implicated in the project? There's a lot to do as we are a fairly new project. We tried to establish all the significant automated IT BP (project banner tagging, WP1.0, cleanup detection, new articles detection, AFD detection, non-categorized article detection) and at this point, nothing will replace human heads for improving the Quality ratings of Java articles. Hope to hear from you soon, --AlainR345Techno-Wiki-Geek 20:43, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

For the time being, I am busy with other things. I just got laid off from my last job, so most of my time for the next few weeks will be looking for another. Sorry, but if you feel I'm not pulling my weight sufficiently, you can always remove me from the list. — Loadmaster (talk) 03:44, 6 March 2010 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image File:SolyentGreen28d.png

Thank you. DASHBot (talk) 05:42, 14 March 2010 (UTC)

Hi Loadmaster, I saw that you just added File:Alamo-Map-5399e7.jpg to the Battle of the Alamo page. I don't think that this image is appropriately public domain. From my understanding of the copyright law, when photographing three-dimensional works of art, we have to rely on the copyright status of the work of art. Do you know when the plaque was created? Karanacs (talk) 15:01, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

I managed to read the print on this version of the plaque, and it looks like it was made/dedicated in 1986. I'm going to open a deletion discussion of the two images on Commons to see whether I'm interpreting the criteria appropriately. Your input is welcome. Karanacs (talk) 15:25, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

Replies in Talk:COBOL

Along the same lines, this is a bit late in coming, but the replies you gave to my questions about COBOL data types are outstanding! --Dmh (talk) 22:09, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

No prob. Like you, I also tend to respond to some talk page threads months after the fact. That's both the beauty of, and the downside to, interactive media like Wikipedia. — Loadmaster (talk) 16:54, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

The article Places of worship near Dallas, Texas has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Wikipedia is not the Yellow Pages

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Nyttend (talk) 17:07, 23 October 2010 (UTC)

That is okay by me (the creator of the article), but see the article's talk page for other similar existing pages that I based the article on. Perhaps those articles also need to be deleted? — Loadmaster (talk) 18:19, 25 October 2010 (UTC)
