as a new editor

kmowing tasmania /from tasmania / of tasmania / whatever - is most welcome, as the noticeboard at the project can sometimes have a wait of months for a reply, your edit summaries are marvellous - but realise that edit summaries are much easier lost than talk page items. your capacity to improve articles is more valued in the tassie realm as there is such quietness a times... when unsure, ask! JarrahTree 14:55, 29 January 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for the info, and also thanks for the welcome! Frankly, I must admit I have never been to Australia myself and am only applying information I found on the internet. I did use to have relations on the continent though, which is why I occasionally read through Australian wiki articles.
And now to make sure I understand you correctly: Do you mean my current way of doing things is right, or that I should resort more to noting stuff down on talk pages? (English is not my native language either ^^)
I would think that for a major change I should make a talk page entry - like I did for Hobart when I restructured the "infrastructure" section to include subsections. For edits that only improve a page in a minor way, such as adding a source, I feel like a edit summary is enough. Is this correct? LordPeterII (talk) 15:43, 29 January 2020 (UTC)

Women in Red

Hi there, LordPeterII, and welcome to Women in Red. It's good to have another German-speaker interested in contributing to our coverage of women. In the short time you've been here, you seem to have gained a pretty good basic proficiency in editing and I see you have already created two new articles. When you feel ready to write biographies, you might find it useful to look through our Ten Simple Rules. As for commenting on talk pages (see above), I would only do so if a serious issue needs to be sorted out or if you would like other editors to help with research or development of the article. Otherwise edit summaries are usually sufficient. Please let me know if you run into any difficulties or need assistance. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 10:33, 26 July 2020 (UTC)

Thank you @Ipigott, yeah I hope to have grasped the basics by now (I know the importance of citing sources from university). I'm afraid that lately I have actually created more redlinks for women, but I guess that also helps further down the line ;). And while I won't devote my Wikipedia time exclusively to women, I'll probably tackle some biographies soon, especially ones from the German-speaking region (not because I have a geographical bias, but because I can read the sources). I'll take a look at the ten rules you linked when I do, thanks. --LordPeterII (talk) 11:58, 26 July 2020 (UTC)

Okezone

Good day, many thanks for your suggestion. The company was purchased by a Chinese group, therefore having it a sub-article under the Indonesian group is not an option. I will try to furtherly improve the draft, hoping an administrator shall finally approve the submission. Thanks again Goodwillgames (talk) 08:41, 17 August 2020 (UTC)

Ah right, I forgot that. So yeah, then unless that Chinese group has an article, that's not an option. However, I had recently brought this up and was told by yet another administrator that there isn't a chance atm to get this approved with current English coverage. However, a valid point they brought up was that since this is an Indonesian website, there might be more Indonesian sources available about it, which could push it over the threshold needed for sufficient coverage. If you don't mind, I would try to contact someone who might be able to help find some sources in Indonesian. If they do, you could incorporate these sources in your draft. --LordPeterII (talk) 18:53, 17 August 2020 (UTC)
Whoops, meant to link here: Wikipedia:Translators_available#Indonesian-to-English. Also forget to ping you @Goodwillgames. --LordPeterII (talk) 18:56, 17 August 2020 (UTC)

“Personal preferences”

I am putting the page back to where it was before it was messed around. Bofuses is the one putting their personal presence onto the page. The mass of line breaks makes it difficult to see if there are any useful changes there. Most of his (or her) changes Go against the default settings and do not improve anything. Thanks. - 109.249.185.63 (talk) 12:36, 16 November 2020 (UTC)

Hey, I understand what your point is. However, imo you should not just revert stuff for the sake of reverting, and because it makes it "difficult to see useful changes". Just think for a moment how much worse your subsequent reverting makes it for other people to see "useful" changes! I personally must admit I couldn't care less about 90% of the formatting edits under scrutiny here, but: The edits by Bofuses do not seem to be damaging, and so under WP:AFG should not be reverted unless they actually make the article worse. They might make checking the edit history worse, sure - but that is not the point here. The article's quality is not diminished by them, so they need (and should) not be reverted. Just check the policy you are citing: As per its section on reverting, your second revert no longer fits the idea. If you are very concerned about the whole affair, I would strongly suggest we take this to a discussion on the article's talk page, and ask for input from others that were not involved. That's better than having an edit war. --LordPeterII (talk) 13:22, 16 November 2020 (UTC)
I made a talk page section at the article about it, check it out if you want here. --LordPeterII (talk) 13:43, 16 November 2020 (UTC)
They do make it worse. Removing the spaces in the measurements, for example, goes against the MOS. Changing the spacing and dashes of the radio and television names is wrong as it changes the correct identity of the source (Just click on the links that show the proper name to see the difference). This user has his own personal preference for how spacing should be done, and it is not a view shared by the MOS. And this is the problem with so many other needless changes: the bad edits are hidden in the unnecessary ones. Thanks. - 109.249.185.63 (talk) 14:47, 16 November 2020 (UTC)
Good point there. Well, looks like the issue is indeed more delicate than I first thought. Anyway, I'll move the discussion to the article talk page to make it easier for others to follow along. --LordPeterII (talk) 14:53, 16 November 2020 (UTC)

Poluyi article

Curious - for what purposes would you consider citing the Poluyi article? David notMD (talk) 16:51, 16 November 2020 (UTC)

Nah I wasn't considering citing it myself, I just asked in the context of that article where it was already cited. And I'm just a bit careful with journals because I've cited bad ones before and was made aware of that, hence why I'm using that script now. I'll actually probably ping the script's creator about that journal. --LordPeterII (talk) 08:19, 17 November 2020 (UTC)

Thank you for suggesting hooky hooks at DYK

Your ideas are like a breath of fresh air! Thank you for all your suggestions! Yoninah (talk) 22:22, 10 December 2020 (UTC)

Thanks Yoninah :) I tend to get caught up in whatever area of Wikipedia I am looking at, so I guess it was a happy coincidence I could help. btw I was actually aware that some of the skating hooks were overly suggestive and only borderline acceptable, but wanted to give an "extreme" alternative on the opposite end of the hook scale. I'm happy one of them got selected in the end, but really I just didn't want it to go stale and provide something to restart discussion. --LordPeterII (talk) 07:56, 11 December 2020 (UTC)

Teahouse response - Niall Dunne - Edit Request

Hi LordPeterII,

Thank you so much for your response to me on the Treehouse page, I was unable to respond on the thread there so decided I would drop you a message here instead.

With regards to the points you mentioned: - Niall has been CEO since 2018, this info is in the same website link that states he is CEO but a pop-up window when you click his profile. I tried to see if I could link a pop-up but this doesn't seem to be possible. - I have now added an article to reference the funding raised.

Thank you again so much for your feedback, I really appreciate it! If there is anything else you'd advice me, I am more than happy with feedback. :)

SophieStromback (talk) 12:54, 11 December 2020 (UTC)

Hi SophieStromback, no problem, talk pages are meant for discussion :)
I indeed didn't click the popup (didn't realize there was one...), but the info is there so that's fine for a basic fact. Forbes source is good, that's definitely reliable. Will do the edit soon. --LordPeterII (talk) 22:12, 11 December 2020 (UTC)

DYK for Henry Ehrenreich

On 29 December 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Henry Ehrenreich, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that during the 1973 oil crisis, material scientist Henry Ehrenreich assessed photovoltaic cells and was an advisor to the U.S. Department of Energy? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Henry Ehrenreich. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Henry Ehrenreich), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (ie, 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

An expansion on your Teahouse question

Hi there,

Rather than trigger a huge essay in the Teahouse, you have indeed found one of the chronic, complicated, and messy questions in the AfD sphere - GNG vs SNG, made further complicated by theory vs practice. I'm an AfD nerd, so I love it. To give a bit more expansion on the Teahouse answers given, without it turning into my dissertation topic. I know you're very clearly not a new user, so apologies if I'm teaching my grandmother to suck eggs:

  1. Some SNGs are specifically advisory, and cede ultimate authority to GNG. NSPORTS is probably the example of this. If a delete !vote is claiming that an NSPORTS subcriteria is met but GNG isn't, in theory, the Keep supporters should be showing that both are met (or, at least, GNG).
  2. Some SNGs are specifically not advisory, and state that they override GNG. NACADEMIC and NCORP are clear examples of this, the former deliberately offering pathways for subjects that might fail to meet GNG; the latter being a supped up subset version of GNG.
  3. Quite a few are unclear which they do, at least in the written form. NPOL is an example where there is a very clear consensus (at least among the AfD regulars, but also the Community) that in the specific realm of politics, it supercedes - the key effect being that most candidates don't warrant an article even if there is more than sufficient coverage to meet GNG. There are quite a few SNGs where it is less clear, or depends far more on circumstances. Most AfD disputes that are actually good faith disagree on whether certain sources are reliable or not, as I'm sure you've seen more than enough examples by now - but a few are outright policy disagreements in this realm.

Nosebagbear (talk) 00:33, 23 February 2021 (UTC)

@Nosebagbear: Ah, now that fully explains that! The examples I mentioned on the Teahouse thus were of the first type, which is why a failure of GNG was mentioned by the nominator, even though the articles might have (barely) passed CRIN, a subset of NSPORTS.
Thanks for the detailed response, I am feeling notably (ha, pun) more self-confident about participating in AfD discussions now. Cheers! --LordPeterII (talk) 22:27, 28 February 2021 (UTC)

Draft

There is lot of name-dropping in the History section that could be criticized as promotional by association with famous names. Suggest 3rd paragraph and image of Prince Charles, 5th paragraph naming of FM and MB, 6th paragraph more of the same. I'll try to look at it with a fresh eye tomorrow. David notMD (talk) 01:36, 27 April 2021 (UTC)

I suggest removing the Criticism section. David notMD (talk) 20:42, 28 April 2021 (UTC)

Remilk

You've taken over the Draft:Remilk draft. I would like to see the creator have a hand in this too. The draft contains a sentence "The resulting product is a lactose-free and cholesterol-free dairy alternative which carries no hormones or antibiotics." That I would like the creator to address, given my comments. Also, I suspect the whole thing may be premature, given no product brought to market yet in any country. David notMD (talk) 13:49, 27 April 2021 (UTC)

Fair point David notMD. I didn't consider that it would serve as a good exercise for them; I simply had some free time on hand and started writing. I left that sentence in, but already weakened it a bit since the explicit comparison was inferred by the creator. It's unfortunate, as it would be better for them to realize that themself... I'll probably not be so aggressive in editing again in the future. There's still things I am learning, too :/ But I'll step away from editing there now, and let Sinead Morrissey continue to edit there. Not sure why this is re-submitted already, as waiting a few months for more substantial news might indeed increase its chances of acceptance. --LordPeterII (talk) 14:13, 27 April 2021 (UTC)
Sinead resubmitted it minutes after it was declined. I also think that WP:TOOSOON applies here. David notMD (talk) 14:17, 27 April 2021 (UTC)
Sinead should also be asked about COI or PAID, as is a new editor, and except for a handful of early edits, this is the only article Sinead is editing. David notMD (talk) 14:25, 27 April 2021 (UTC)
I left an are you COI or PAID query at Sinead's Talk page. David notMD (talk) 13:00, 28 April 2021 (UTC)

Update on white-nosed saki DYK nomination

Hey @LordPeterII: I wanted to message here as I am just waiting on marking to finish for my uni course and wasn't sure if I would get penalised for making any additional edits on the article after the due date. Feel free to check over it though as it has been updated, and let me know if there are any other changes you want to see. I will keep you posted once marking has been complete, if that's okay. Thank you for your patience! Vikster28 (talk) 07:39, 20 June 2022 (UTC)

@Vikster28: Alright, I'll check the article again to see what's still missing (there's no hurry so we can wait for marking, just wanted to check that you're still around). Will reply to you on the DYK nom page. Hopefully you'll get a good grade; it might not be perfect but it's solid work you've done, especially for a wiki newbie :) --LordPeterII (talk) 09:44, 23 June 2022 (UTC)

Concern regarding Draft:German LNG Terminal

Information icon Hello, LordPeterII. This is a bot-delivered message letting you know that Draft:German LNG Terminal, a page you created, has not been edited in at least 5 months. Drafts that have not been edited for six months may be deleted, so if you wish to retain the page, please edit it again or request that it be moved to your userspace.

Picrolite moved to draftspace

An article you recently created, Picrolite, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. September songs

Thank you for DYK, and for constructive reviewing! The rose pic was taken on 11 Sep 2021, and this year was full of music that day, Tag des offenen Denkmals, not only singing in church and rehearsals for Verdi's Requiem, but two concerts at special places pictured, one a synagogue (pictured on its wall). Today three DYK: a piece we'll perform on Sunday, a violinist we heard in June playing the Berg Concerto (my brother played in the orchestra), and a Youth Orchestra shaped by a conductor who recently died. Almost too much of a good thing. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:22, 14 September 2022 (UTC)

A trout for you :)

Whack!

You've been whacked with a wet trout.

Don't take this too seriously. Someone just wants to let you know that you did something silly.

Looks like you used the same QPQ (Getbol, Korean Tidal Flats) for two different nominations (Ampullae of Lorenzini, White-lipped peccary). I'm not gonna make you do another review or anything, but do remember double-check next time! :) theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (she/her) 06:59, 21 October 2022 (UTC)

Aargh! And I try so hard to do bookkeeping on this, I have a special section dedicated just for keeping track of QPQs, how did this one slip through? *facepalm* Well, I deserve that trouting and secretly, I slightly enjoy it, it being my first trout whack. Feels weird, but good :D

Mobile Account (not allowed to edit the userpage, will move info there later)

Hey, so I ended up making a separate mobile account (even though I'm not an admin or anything, who would have more reason to do so), which is called "LordPeter2go". I am editing from it right now! If you don't believe me and assume I'm a vandal, I reckon LordPeterII will correct this incursion or confirm my story when next he goes online :) LordPeter2go (talk) 06:37, 24 October 2022 (UTC)

Apologies

I didn't mark the DYK for review -- we had an edit conflict as I was about to submit. — hike395 (talk) 18:58, 30 October 2022 (UTC)

@Hike395: Ah, no problem; you take it then. Marking for review is not really standard procedure btw, I just use it to keep track since I nominate and review a large number of articles. You do the review, but I may chime in and suggest an alt hook for you, okay? :) –LordPeterII (talk) 19:04, 30 October 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for being so flexible! Marking for review is actually a good idea --- I've only done a handful of DYK over the last 19+ years: I'll try to remember the next time I do one.
Feel free to make an even better hook -- I proposed one where the method of execution (being beaten to death with a bamboo stick) is called out. Gruesome, but more "hook"y. — hike395 (talk) 19:39, 30 October 2022 (UTC)

Hello -DYK Japanese Tree Frog

Thank you for your comments. I have addressed your comments and published the changes for the Japanese Tree Frog Wikipedia Article. Please let me know if anything else needs to be done! ~~~ ShawnMohammed (talk) 17:19, 2 November 2022 (UTC)

@ShawnMohammed: Hey, great that you are still around! Yes, those three places are fixed, but I rather meant to give them as examples: For an appearance at DYK, all paragraphs need to be cited right to the end. So, for example, the sentence ending in [...] mediating factor in choosing spots close to females. also needs a citation – and several more! Since you worked hard to add all the info, I am sure you can find where you got it from and add citations for the remaining parts as well. Feel free to reply to me here or on the nomination template when you are done! –LordPeterII (talk) 20:50, 2 November 2022 (UTC)

growing a thick skin

Don't let it get to you. At DYK, there's a lot of scrutiny. Every mistake gets called out. You just have to let it roll off your back. There are a lot of people out there happy to gotcha but unwilling to help. Do your best, do not let quality suffer in the name of quantity, and don't burn yourself out. If no one shows up one day...well, IMO, that means it's not important enough to continue with. Take care. Valereee (talk) 23:09, 4 November 2022 (UTC)
