Your edits at 2022 Invasion of Ukraine article. You mention being active at Wikimedia Commons and I was wondering if you could have someone look at updating the animation map of the invasion. The current one only goes to March 24 and is almost 2 weeks old. Can someone update it? ErnestKrause (talk) 16:19, 7 April 2022 (UTC)

This means that those in the Researcher user group and Checkusers who are not administrators can now access Special:RevisionDelete. The users able to view the special page after this change are the 3 users in the Researcher group, as there are currently no checkusers who are not already administrators. (T301928)
  • When viewing deleted revisions or diffs on Special:Undelete a back link to the undelete page for the associated page is now present. (T284114)

Love is blind image in Idiom

I added a clarify tag to an image (Love is blind) you added to the article Idiom almost eight years ago. I don't understand how that image is relevant to that section of that article, or to the article itself, and your edit summary didn't explain it. The phrase "love is blind" may be an idiom, but since the article doesn't mention it, the image is more distracting than helpful to me. Other readers may be likewise puzzled, so maybe you could add something to establish the image's relevance. Thanks. —8.9.93.141 (talk) 21:58, 11 April 2022 (UTC)

Thank you, 8.9.93.141 for taking a closer look at this edit of mine. You are correct: it is hard to understand the relevance without a descent description. Would Donato Barcaglia's impression of the proverbial_phrase love is blind be suitable to subscribe it? I noticed that even on the German Wikipedia no description has been added to the image . WP:FFD

When Marchjuly (talk · contribs) suggested starting a discussion at WP:FFD they meant starting a new entry specific to that image on that page, which has a little bit of process to it just so that we can try and keep things straight. I'm afraid I can't help much with the language barrier, but if you can go to that page and explain what you mean by "things have changed a lot recently... and the world might never be the same again" and how that might help the use of the Hermann Höfle image in List of major perpetrators of the Holocaust meet the requirements of Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria, that would be greatly appreciated. Bad reference replacements

Here is the diff - several old astronautix.com pages now forward to 404 page, so we have archived versions in the references. That's okay. Replacing the old link with a hard link to the 404 page, as the script did, is not the right approach. --mfb (talk) 14:26, 10 April 2022 (UTC)

The added http://www.astronautix.com/4/404page.html as reference URL is wrong (and the added title is wrong, too). The referenced page never existed there and never will. It would be better to keep the old (dead) URL with the correct title in the reference, in addition to the archived version of it. --mfb (talk) 14:39, 10 April 2022 (UTC)

If we have an archived version it's probably fine, but it's a larger problem. At least 2100 articles reference it, most of them with outdated links. I checked a few and the articles are still available, but under a new URL with no predictable pattern. An archived version could be added by bots, updating the link automatically is probably not feasible. --mfb (talk) 02:25, 11 April 2022 (UTC)

The New topic tool helps editors create new ==Sections== on discussion pages. New editors are more successful with this new tool. You can read the report. Soon, the Editing team will offer this to all editors at most WMF-hosted wikis. You can join the discussion about this tool for the English Wikipedia is at Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)#Enabling the New Topic Tool by default. You will be able to turn it off in the tool or at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion.

The Editing team plans to change the appearance of talk pages. These are separate from the changes made by the mw:Desktop improvements project and will appear in both Vector 2010 and Vector 2022. The goal is to add some information and make discussions look visibly different from encyclopedia articles. You can see some ideas at Wikipedia talk:Talk pages project#Prototype Ready for Feedback.

  • The IP Info feature has been deployed to all wikis as a Beta Feature. Any autoconfirmed user may enable the feature using the "IP info" checkbox under Preferences → Beta features. Autoconfirmed users will be able to access basic information about an IP address that includes the country and connection method. Those with advanced privileges (admin, bureaucrat, checkuser) will have access to extra information that includes the Internet Service Provider and more specific location.

  • A new preference named "Enable limited width mode" has been added to the Vector 2022 skin. The preference is also shown as a toggle on every page if your monitor is 1600 pixels or wider. When disabled it removes the whitespace added by Vector 2022 on the left and right of the page content. Disabling this preference has the same effect as enabling the wide-vector-2022 gadget. Contentious topics procedure adopted

The Arbitration Committee has concluded the 2021-22 review of the contentious topics system (formerly known as discretionary sanctions), and its final decision is viewable at the revision process page. As part of the review process, the Arbitration Committee has resolved by motion that:

The above proposals that are supported by an absolute majority of unrecused active arbitrators are hereby enacted. The drafting arbitrators (CaptainEek, L235, and Wugapodes) are directed to take the actions necessary to bring the proposals enacted by this motion into effect, including by amending the procedures at WP:AC/P and WP:AC/DS. The authority granted to the drafting arbitrators by this motion expires one month after enactment.

The Arbitration Committee thanks all those who have participated in the 2021-22 discretionary sanctions review process and all who have helped bring it to a successful conclusion. This motion concludes the 2021-22 discretionary sanctions review process.

This motion initiates a one-month implementation period for the updates to the contentious topics system. The Arbitration Committee will announce when the initial implementation of the Committee's decision has concluded and the amendments made by the drafting arbitrators in accordance with the Committee's decision take effect. Any editors interested in the implementation process are invited to assist at the implementation talk page, and editors interested in updates may subscribe to the update list.

  1. The Editing team will finish adding new features to the Talk pages project and deploy it.
  2. They are beginning a new project, Edit check.

Talk pages project

Screenshot showing the talk page design changes that are currently available as beta features at all Wikimedia wikis. These features include information about the number of people and comments within each discussion.
Some of the upcoming changes

The Editing team is nearly finished with this first phase of the Talk pages project. Nearly all new features are available now in the Beta Feature for Discussion tools.

It will show information about how active a discussion is, such as the date of the most recent comment. There will soon be a new "Add topic" button. You will be able to turn them off at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion. Please tell them what you think.

Daily edit completion rate by test group: DiscussionTools (test group) and MobileFrontend overlay (control group)

An A/B test for Discussion tools on the mobile site has finished. Editors were more successful with Discussion tools. The Editing team is enabling these features for all editors on the mobile site.

New Project: Edit Check

The Editing team is beginning a project to help new editors of Wikipedia. It will help people identify some problems before they click "Publish changes". The first tool will encourage people to add references when they add new content. Please watch that page for more information. You can join a conference call on 3 March 2023 to learn more.

New Article

Hi Lotje Not been in touch for a while, hope you are well and cheery. Could I ask, do you know if Theroadislong is OK? I ask, as I've just written a new draft article, 'Draft:Sottish Castles Restoration Projects'. I asked Theroadislong for his opinion on a first draft and he was in general agreement that it was an appropriate subject. I've written three articles before and he approved them all, straightaway. But this one he said I should put it up for Review! (which I've done) Is he much less active or something? Hope you don't mind me asking. Hi Lotje! Brilliant, thank you! I actually thought that list would be better in a table, but trying to master the intricacies of Wikipedia's MarkUp AND VusualEditor languages was quite beyond me for one project! Indeed, I cannot think why they don't scrap BOTH of them and use say LibreOffice, which I use for word processing all the time - I can throw together a table in that language in a minute! Anyway, that is good. I think I might make the image a wee bit smaller, and of course add a few more images of the Castles as available on Wikimedia Commons - feel free! Hi Lotje Sorry I didn't get back to you yesterday - DIY took longer than expected! Thanks for letting me know that Theroadislong is in business. Perhaps if he has been on holiday and is refreshed he might look favourably on the ‘Scottish Castles’ draft!
However, I’m actually writing about another project which I have done a bit of work on but not finished. During WW1 there was a terrible railway accident here in Scotland when a large number of soldiers were killed at a place called Quintinshill near Gretna.
It’s all very fully described in a Wikipedia article, ‘Quintinshill rail disaster’. One thing missing is the names of all the soldiers who died. Typing them all out would be quite a task. There is a Memorial here in Edinburgh and I thought to photograph the two halves of the Memorial and the ten individual panels with the names with the intention to add them to the Article.
I got the first part done, high quality images where all the names are easily readable, ages ago. Then I put all the images up on W Commons more recently. What I haven't done is put them into a gallery on the Article site – yet again, I looked at creating a gallery and thought this is just too difficult!
Would you be interested in sharing this project and putting up the images? If you would with your knowledge I’d be very grateful - but if not, it’s not a problem.
On Wikipedia, the Article is entitled ‘Quintinshill rail disaster’. All 12 images are on Wikipedia Commons if you search for ‘Gretna Memorial’.

I did this numbering very carefully, as I thought it would keep them together and in order, but for some reason it didn't quite work, but they are all there.
Right at the end of the Article, there is a section called ‘Memorials’, with three photographs. I thought the images of the panels could go under these, with the whole ‘Panel Left Main’ picture centred, then the five left close-up panels in a row below.
It’s important that the panels are in the right order, that is one to five, as that is how they are on the Memorial itself, with Officers first(!) then all the names in alphabetical order. Then below that the whole ‘Panel Right Main’ photo, then again the panel right close-ups.
If you put them up in that order, I could then add some text as appropriate. If you feel like doing that, it would be great, no hurry of course, but if not, think nothing of it.

However, I really would like to put this into the main Article on Wikipedia itself? I think I once read somewhere that too many photos on Articles is not encouraged, but I have seen quite a few and I think in this case the images of the panels would be more likely to be viewed than if you have to leave the main site? Gretna Memorial Think I have managed to lay out the images as I had in mind. I put the whole panel image in just as a single centered photo, then below that I created a Gallery of five spaces in a row for the panels, narrowing in the default to 80 units instead of 120. (NB NOT useable like this, as no text and just random five panels.) Do you think this would work incorporated into the Article? perrow= 5 --> means 5 images in a row
perrow= 4 --> means 4 images in a row
perrow= 3 --> means 3 images in a row

CASTLES Had another look at this, your idea of putting the 'before' and 'after' photos together a very good one, but could perhaps both be a bit bigger? I see you have put them in as a Gallery, so better adjusted in Markup? Also, thought the plans image was a bit too big, so made that smaller, hope you agree.
GRETNA MEMORIAL Now we've got a good layout, would you be prepared to put them up in the Article as I suggested before, now way up this page! One problem is making sure they are in the right order, that is, left panel main, then small panels, left one to five, etc. I could then add a bit of text as necessary. reFill 2

I noticed an edit of filling in a bare reference, and that you're using reFill 2 (or at least the edit was marked that way). I'm not familiar with that particular tool, so I'm not sure if this is part of the tool or a manual part of the edit, but the edit here [1] was not completely valid. There was no pipe "|" character in between the website and access-dates params. It was entered like this: |website=www.grittv.comaccessdate=March 16, 2023.   • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Scottish Castles

Hi Lotje! Still trying to get this Scottish Castles Draft accepted - but nobody will look at it! Or if they have, they see Theroadislong's comments and will not touch it. I just don't understand this. First of all he indicated that he thought the article was OK, then he comes up with this 'essay' stuff, (which I beleive is now totally edited out). But I must say I think it is most unfair of him to say that he is declining to review it, then to add that it "feels like an essay". Don't know how to tackle this, but if it where on the Dutch Wikipedia, I would go the the Dutch version of the Village pump.Since you have a Teahouse and a Help desk, I guess you could bring your question forward to the attention on one of both. Have you tried the reviewing possibilities? I also noticed the Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/Reviewing instructions. I very much hope you succeed in your endeavour, cause imho it is a subject/article like the Castles in Portugal. Don't understand why there is the redirect from Castles in Scotland.   • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

  • Following a motion, remedies 3.1 (All related articles under 1RR whenever the dispute over naming is concerned), 6 (Stalemate resolution) and 30 (Administrative supervision) of the Macedonia 2 case have been rescinded.
  • Following a motion, remedy 6 (One-revert rule) of the The Troubles case has been amended.
  • An arbitration case named Industrial agriculture has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case close 8 November.

Corinth Canal

Hi - I hope this will not be a bother to you, and I apologize that I do not know the editing processes and all that insiders do (thanks!) on Wikipedia.

I was reading the article Corinth Canal, and you are the latest person to edit it, so that is why I'm hoping that you can lead to some necessary corrections there.

I see some definite contradictions on the width and navigation maximum of the canal, when comparing: - 1st paragraph in Overview states 24.6 metres. - 1st paragraph in Layout agrees. - 2nd paragraph in Layout states that the canal "can accommodate ships only of a width up to 17.6 metres... - ... then the very next sentence states that "a 22.5 metres...wide cruise ship successfully traversed the canal"

I hope that you can find the correct information or contact someone who can do so.

Hello anonymous user, thank you for your vigilance . My guess is that, after the reopening of the canal, the max. size of ships allowed through the canal is 17 meters..   • Following a motion, the Extended Confirmed Restriction has been amended, removing the allowance for non-extended-confirmed editors to post constructive comments on the "Talk:" namespace. Now, non-extended-confirmed editors may use the "Talk:" namespace solely to make edit requests related to articles within the topic area, provided that their actions are not disruptive.
  • The Arbitration Committee has announced a call for Checkusers and Oversighters, stating that it will currently be accepting applications for CheckUser and/or Oversight permissions at any point in the year.
  • Eligible users are invited to vote on candidates for the Arbitration Committee until 23:59 December 11, 2023 (UTC). Candidate statements can be seen here.
