Response[edit]

Hi! I wanted to respond on your talk page:

You can tag people by typing {{u|Username}}. What this basically does is send them a notification at the top of their page (and email, if they have it enabled) to let them know that someone tagged them on a specific page. It can be used to either bring that person to the page so they can interact with a discussion or just let them know of the discussion in general. You'd write it out along the lines of {{u|Ian (Wiki Ed)}}.

As far as identity goes, I used cryptography to secure my account in case it ever gets hacked. Without this, if my account was hacked I wouldn't really have an easy way to verify that it's me on the account as opposed to someone who is accessing my account and claiming to be me. I also have it on my main account, which has admin privileges. There's more information about this at Template:Committed identity. It's not something that's required, but it's not a terrible thing to have on your account, especially if you want to stick around and edit after the class is over. I just recommend writing down the key somewhere that's easy to find because you'll be asked to supply it if your account is compromised.

I hope that his helps answer your questions! Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:01, 26 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

First: thanks for rapid response Shalor!
I was actually talking about your choice in the talk page tutorial to link to the random page rather than your talk page.
But that's interesting about tags. So you got a notification because I did this? Shalor. Don't fully understand the 'u'.
I've improved my original message by using the "no wiki" escape tags.

Side note: how do I get my entire response to appear indented whilst still using separate paragraphs?

  • Hi! You can make your whole response look indented by adding the : at the start of any new paragraph/line of the response. I tweaked your response here to show this. Also, when sending out a notification you will have to use the entire username or it won't go through. As far as the U goes, the template uses that as a stand-in for the user prefix, so it would tell the template that it needs to notify User:Shalor (Wiki Ed). A lot of the nitty gritty is part of how the template is formatted, so the more in-depth parts aren't something I'm wholly familiar with.
With the other tag used ([[User:Ian (Wiki Ed)|Ian (Wiki Ed)]]), this is part of an automated signature. As far as mine goes, that's part of the training module so it's not something that would come up automatically with my regular signature. The link that was given goes to Wikipedia's help page about talk pages (ie, what they are, how to use them, and so on) so that you can get more information if you wanted. It's a nifty little guide. :) Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:41, 26 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
