ArbCom 2017 election voter message

Hello, MBUSHIstory. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

The 2021 storming of the United States Capitol, January 6 attack on the United States Capitol Complex, January 6th Insurrection, Capitol riots, or "January 6", refers to an event on January 6, 2021, in which thousands of supporters of Donald Trump breached barricades surrounding the US Capitol, and hundreds assaulted the Capitol police, broke into the US Capitol, and rioted in an attempt to disrupt or stop a joint session of the US Congress from certification of the election of Joseph Biden as the next president of the United States of America.

Following Donald Trump's loss to Joseph Biden in the 2020 presidential election, without any evidence and after losses in numerous court cases challenging the election results, Donald Trump, his surrogates, and supportive right-wing media repeatedly lied to or misled the public, by falsely asserting the election was fraudulent and that Trump had won. Trump lied to his supporters that US Vice President Mike Pence had the power to stop the election from being stolen by refusing certification, as presiding member of the joint Congressional session to certify the election on January 6, 20101. Pence issued a statement that he did not have such a power. Trump called thousands of supporters to a January 6, 2021, rally in Washington DC, to "stop the steal". Trump tweeted the January 6 rally would be "wild", and his surrogates commented that violence was anticipated and "all hell is going to break loose".

At the rally, Trump lied to thousands of his supporters that the election would be stolen if they did not "fight", directed the crowd to march on the US Capitol where Pence and the joint session of Congress were meeting to certify the election, and lied to the crowd that Trump would march to the Capitol building with the crowd. Thousands of Trump supporters marched to the Capitol building and rioted. They assaulted and battered Capitol police, breached physical barriers surrounding the Capitol building, climbed the walls, broke down windows and doors, and stormed the building. The mob searched the building for Pence, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and other senators and house members, chanting threats of physical harm or death.

Police slowed the rioters from entering the Senate chambers by directing the mob toward the police. Police slowed the assault on the House chamber by shooting and killing a member of the mob as the mob attempted to break into the chamber doors. The vice president, house members, and senate members were barely evacuated from the chambers before the rioters entered. Other house and senate members, and their staff, barricaded themselves in rooms and offices where they hid from the rioters. For hours, President Trump delayed in calling off the mob and delayed in calling in backup forces, during which time rioters destroyed property and assaulted and battered police and without relent, injuring numerous officers.

The event resulted in hundreds of arrests and a second impeachment of Trump, at which one Republican house member summarized the event and its cause as "a violent mob attacked the United States Capitol to... stop the counting of presidential electoral votes. This insurrection caused injury, death and destruction... the President (Trump)... summoned this mob, assembled the mob, and lit the flame of this attack... The President (Trump) could have immediately and forcefully intervened to stop the violence. He did not." Many videotaped and photographed themselves attacking the capitol and police, rioting, and as acting with a stated intent to stop the election certification. In the months following the event, Trump surrogates and right wing media falsely characterized the event as being being perpetrated by Trump opponents not supporters, or as being a peaceful event that was mischaracterized as being an attack, riot, or insurrection, despite the photos and videotapes of the acts and statements of intent.

Introduction to contentious topics

You have recently been editing post-1992 politics of the United States and closely related people, which has been designated a contentious topic. This standard message is designed as an introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially-designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;

comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;

follow editorial and behavioural best practice;

comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and

refrain from gaming the system.
