Mobile editor and images

Regarding the decision to put mobile uploads on ice: I agree, it is disappointing when hard work has to be put on the shelf.

Perhaps mobile uploads can be divided into a two-stage process for new editors and editors with a history of deleted images:

• Allow unregistered editors, new editors, and established editors with a poor deleted-uploads record to upload files in a way that they can't embedded or searched (no Google-fu), and in which files are automatically deleted if not edited in the last 30 days.
• A method for established editors without a poor deleted-uploads record to review these uploads and turn them into regular files upon request (similar to Wikipedia:Files for upload). New editors who edit enough to be considered "established editors" before the 30-day window closes would be able to turn their earlier uploads into regular files without further assistance, assuming of course that they do not have a poor deleted-uploads record.
• Established editors without poor deleted-upload records should be able to upload files from any device and use any tools that make uploading easy and convenient.

For the sake of simplicity, I would recommend that "established editors" be automatically calculated (like autoconfirmed) and that it include almost-brand-new accounts provided that they have gone through a tutorial process as well as accounts that are "clearly established" by virtue of age and edit count whether they have gone through a tutorial or not. I also recommend that "established editors" who have poor deletion records and who subsequently go through the tutorial be considered "established editors" in good standing as far as the automated process is concerned. Hi Davidwr, thanks for reaching out. These are all good ideas – I'm especially interested in the idea of a mobile-specific queue of images that need to be reviewed before fully going live, as it's something many sites (e.g., Yelp) have experimented with to solicit mobile uploads but also keep quality in check. And I do think that when we revisit this feature, we should consider it in terms of two forked paths, one for newer users and one for more experienced ones, rather than one linear experience for everyone.

Anyway, thanks again for the the suggestions. It is a little sad when features don't succeed beyond our wildest dreams, but I'd rather we experiment, fail, and learn from mistakes than always play it maximally conservative or fail and just continue failing ;) Maryana (WMF) (talk) 18:01, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

Feedback and mobile discussion

Hey Maryana, myself and a couple other people have raised issues with the Mobile interface during discussions at WT:Flow. For future reference, is there a better place on-wiki to discuss this? I don't have a great answer for this, unfortunately. Mobile hasn't been of wide interest to folks onwiki in the past, so we haven't had any centralized discussion spots for it, but since the former is starting to change, the latter should, too. I'll give it some thought and chat with our Community Liaison team to see what we can do to improve our communication channels :) In the meantime, the best we've got is the mobile mailing list (mobile-llists.wikimedia), which is open to everyone and publicly archived. Could you please tell someone who might know what's going on that several people are reporting not being able to find article talk pages when browsing articles on mobile view? Wikipedia_talk:Flow#Misconception:_Mobile_editing_is_the_future_for_talk_pages, a few other places. Judging by the screenshots on Comons there's supposed to be a little talk-bubble icon at the top of the page, but I've just tested this on iPad mobile site and mobile app as well as Android mobile site, on pages that I know for sure have existing talk pages, and that icon is nowhere to be seen. Wikipedia

I think Wikipedia idea is amazing and I think this encyclopedia will be the most popular website in the future. You may recall a discussion some time ago about the archiving of IP pages, particularly where those pages are covered in old warnings. I think we agree that these are not positive or encouraging pages, and IMO can only serve to bring everyone down.

I just came away from one such unfortunate state of affairs, where an IP has done nothing but unconstructive things - or so it seems, until looking more carefully.

They made one (reverted) edit that was clearly (IMO) well intentioned, but it was unfortunately reverted and somewhat understandably, the reverter was terse and unpleasant (IMO), most likely (IMO ;-) because the IP appears to be nothing but trouble.

There was an opportunity (which I hope I have jumped on) to encourage the editor to learn to become more helpful, but missed due (I think) to the catalogue of woe currently residing on this user's talk page.

So I wonder: where did the question of IP talk page archiving end up? fredgandt 22:55, 9 February 2016 (UTC)
