Wikisort Project[edit]

Hey, I have started the WikiSort Project. Come on over and check it out!the1physicist 20:22, 23 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It is worth noting that this project will require some (potentially major) software changes. If you get the chance, would you mind dropping by and letting us know how difficult those changes might be? How long do you think it would take to implement most of them? (If approved, of course) Also, once the proposal has been finalized, how do we actually request software modifications? Thanks a bunch.the1physicist 05:17, 27 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I have seen your feature, but I was wondering how much time and effort it would take to develop/implement the ideas specific to the WikiSort Project. I'm asking because I would like to give everyone a timeframe. Also, technical details aside, what do you think of the project?the1physicist 19:51, 27 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Your understanding of the project is pretty much correct. Regarding vandalism, what we would do is take the last 10-100 ratings, and average them. Then we would exclude the top X% outliers and/or do a weighted average. The value of X should be in the vicinity of 10% and will need some experimentation. Also, it will probably vary slightly by article/category, etc. The impression I'm getting is that this rating system is simply waiting for adequate anti-vandalism techniques/selection algorithms. Is this correct? I think we can figure out some/most of those right now, but all teh sexy ones will have to wait until after the trial data collection phase. Thanks for all your help so far!the1physicist 16:31, 28 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't heard from you in a few days, so I was wondering if you got this ^ message. the1physicist 16:34, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Article Validation[edit]

I just stumbled upon the fact that the article validation feature will be enable shortly. I'm slightly concerned that no one told me considering my involvement in the wikisort project. Anyhow, I've got a couple of questions and/or couple of comments. How similar will it be to the test page at [1]? (I really hope we aren't using those categories. Excluding NPOV, those categories seem bogus, particularly the 'funny' rating.) What (if any) features/ideas have been included from the wikisort project? Also, will each category have it's own range (1-3, 1-5, 1-7, etc), or will it be standardized? Is this the much anticipated initial data collection phase? This is getting to be pretty darn exciting. Thanks again for all your hard work, it is very appreciated. EDIT: I almost forgot: when exactly is it going to be turned on? the1physicist 03:16, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Harrie Irving Hancock[edit]

I notice you moved the article H. Irving Hancock to Harrie Irving Hancock. The most predominant form of his name as used in published books is with the inital "H." In fact I don't know if he ever used his full first name. So for wikipedia purposes, is it desirable to use the form of a name a person is most well-known by for the title of the article? Thank you for your vote on my RFA[edit]

Now that the voting has officially closed, I would like to thank you very much for supporting my candidacy for adminstrator and as of 18:36, 28 October 2005 (UTC) I am an administrator. I blocked this user because he was changing User pages very rapidly, turns out he was doing very efficient sockpuppet labelling. So I unblocked him straight away but later on he was apparently autoblocked. (block log)

The user sent me an e-mail containing the autoblock message:

BTW, I'm still blocked:
21:10, 2 November 2005, RoyBoy blocked #53551 (expires 21:10, 3 November 2005) (Autoblocked because your IP address has been recently used by "O^O". The reason given for O^O's block is: "Spammer".)

On the advice of someone on IRC I blocked him for 15mins in an attempt to get rid of the autoblock glitch, but I doubt it was successful as the autoblock appeared to have already expired. I'm hoping you would be able to ensure the autoblock doesn't come back. Much thanks. - RoyBoy 800 16:10, 3 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading BP photos[edit]

Hi, thanks for uploading your Bletchley Park photos to Commons. I'll try and get round to adding some of them to Bletchley Park articles once the image servers are working a little faster ;-) I had been trying to find out more information about a cipher machine on display at BP, and one of your photos included the caption card which had been added to the display since I last visited (the machine was Singlet; I blogged about it here). Joris Karl Huysmans in Project Gutenberg catalog[edit]

On my talk page, you mentioned that there were two different entries for this author in the PG catalog. Thanks; I'll take a look at it. New entries are being automatically added every day so keeping up with this is a never-ending task, and there are always more inconsistancies that could be found if one wants to look closer. You are welcome to mention any further potentential problems on my talk page, or at the address catalog [at] pglaf. org, which will often get a swifter responce. Andrew Sly 07:19, 23 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

HI, I tried to upload a higher quality version of this image, redered from the .svg file created by you. It looks fine here, but really bad over here. Do you known what's wrong? Cheers, —R. Koot 20:05, 27 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for starting his article! One of those things I've been meaning to do and never got a round to it. I'm frankly surprised to see that he was mentioned at all in the 1911 Britannica. I amended it with some data translated out of French Wikipedia. Smerdis of Tlön 19:04, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Importing Wikipedia into MySql[edit]

I downloaded one of the wikipedia database dumps today for research purposes (20051127_pages_articles.xml.7z), but I'm having trouble importing it into mysql. Google suggested I use Navicat, but the import wizard keeps freezing on step 5. Do you know what could be causing me grief, or is there a better way to import xml into MySql? Thanks a bunch. the1physicist 01:12, 10 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It just occured to me that I need to download one of the .sql files also. (There's nothing quite like that realization that you've been running your head into a wall for hours for no reason.) My question is, which one? Thanks again. the1physicist 01:45, 10 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Encarta[edit]

Do you have the original, completely unpruned list of entries in Encarta? I've already gotten your deleted list, but I don't know if it was pruned at all. I need the completely unpruned list. — BRIAN0918 • 2005-12-10 13:13

What was wrong with the Harold Clifton image?[edit]

Hi Magnus, you proposed the image of Harold Clifton for deletion, but failed to notify it on my talk page (I was the uploader), nor did you notify it on the Harold Clifton page. PG list pruning[edit]

Thanks for the note about the PG list. I've extracted a list, compared them with what's already in the PG catalog, and begun adding links back to wikipedia, checking for inconsistancies as I go. I don't really have any easy way to make a list of "relevant" authors. However, I have started to make a list of PG authors I come across that seem significant enough to be worthy of note (i.e., I can find information about them online in other places) but do not seem to have wikipedia articles yet.

So here is a preliminary list:

  • Holmes, Mary Jane, 1825-1907
  • Edward Alexander Powell
  • Eugene Demolder 1862-1919
  • Dallas Lore Sharp (1870-1929)
  • Andrejs Pumpurs (1841-1902)
  • Connor, Ralph, Pseudonym, 1860-1937 (Charles William Gordon)
  • Charles Alden Seltzer (Aug. 15, 1875 - Feb. 9, 1942)
  • Rex Ellingwood Beach 1877-
  • Augustus Thomas (1857-1934) Playwright

Would more like this in the future be helpful? Andrew Sly 01:01, 12 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

New crossover lists?[edit]

Magnus,

There have been lots of new lists created at WP:MEA and I was wondering if you could cross some of them with the hotlist and general list. I have a feeling that the individual lists won't be very long so can I suggest that instead of separate pages a "GeneralxAll" and a "HotlistxAll" pages be created where the individual subprojects are listed as headers. If you don't have time I understand but I think it would be useful for directing creation. Thanks! --Reflex Reaction (talk)• 16:34, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your new list is a much better way to do it. Thanks for creating it and I will look into pruning each of the items from the list. --Reflex Reaction (talk)• 06:32, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Immage of PCR cycle[edit]

I'm curious: You show the original primer templates re-annealing to each other and not participating in futher cycles. I was under the impression that they continued to participate in every cycle of PCR. Do you have any references to back this up (I admit that I don't have any to back up my statement)? This would be as much for my own interest as for accuracy. Friedgreenkillertomatoes 16:54, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Use of gutenberg author template[edit]

Hi Magnus. I've just noticed that in the article Margaret Penrose you had modified the gutenberg template so that it read

Works by Margaret Penrose

instead of

Works by "Margaret Penrose"

In that case, and other examples of Stratemeyer Syndicate pseudonyms I intentionally put in the quote marks because there never was any such person. It was a house pseudonym. Andrew Sly 06:36, 17 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In the article Arthur Middleton you added a gutenberg author template. I deleted it, and put my reasoning on the talk page, as to why I believe it is not the same person. Just recently I see that you have put the template back again. If you have reasons to believe this is the same person could you please mention it on the appropriate talk page? According to the logs 14:25, 10 May 2006 Magnus Manske deleted "Image:Johannes Diderik van der Waals.jpg" (Now on Commons). Unfortunately there is one small problem: Where did that picture come from in the first place? That information is not provided on commons:Image:Johannes Diderik van der Waals.jpg, and AFAIK pictures without "source" information are mass deleted from commons. So I was wondering whether it is possible to retrieve the source information from the deleted image on en wiki? JdH 01:26, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Push for Commons bug[edit]

Hi, Magnus. I've been giving your push-for-Commons script a try, and it certainly makes mass migration of images a lot easier. There's a slight issue I think could help with es.wiki images, though.

Quite a few of our images make use of es:Template:Propio, a local variation of commons:Template:Self. The script does not properly recognize these, though, listing them as without a valid license. I guess fixing that wouldn't require too much extra code, and would certainly make it easier for us.

Since I'm asking, I'll mention a wishlist item as well. With GFDL-tagged images, specially those using the above template, it would be nicer if the tag applied in the upload text weren't simply {{GFDL}}, but rather {{GFDL-user-w}}, since the script already has the necessary data to fill the required fields.

TIA, Taragüí @ 11:22, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Now that is some quick coding. I'm impressed. Thanks a lot. I'll try to pull some others into moving all out stuff to Commons. Thanks again, Taragüí @ 15:15, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

CommonsHelper[edit]

I just got done explaining this tool to some one who doesn't speak English. The instructions are about as simple as can be, but that's only if the user speaks English. Is there a way to internationalize your tools? That would be great, thanks.--Orgullomoore 18:40, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. That's a good temporary fix, but it's only valid until that user gets more messages, and isn't ideal for a number of other factors in the long run. Would it be possible to implement a CGI parameter like the ?uselang=es that Wikimedia uses, and create a page on Commons for translating all the variables you would need to include? That seems more wiki-ish to me, if you know what I mean. I will provide some examples below, just so you know what I mean. You will surely need more, but that's what we can use the Commons page for:

CommonsHelper: question[edit]

Hello, I have a question about CommonsHelper - why does it enclose original image history in <nowiki> tags? It produces wrongly formatted descriptions, for example * 20:39, 23. 11. 2005 [[:cs:User:Zp|Zp]] 704×1200 (226 733 bajt?) <span class="comment">(obrázek kru?tíka bahenního ze starého n?meckého herbá?e zdroj:http://caliban.mpiz-koeln.mpg.de/~stueber/max_schulze/high/IMG_5854.html)</span>. Thanks, Timichal 05:51, 20 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your explanation. I found out the description template breaks without <nowiki> only when there's a template tag in the summary (e.g. ''* 20:39, 23. 11. 2005 User:123 800×600 (100 000 bytes) (Picture of a picture. {{GFDL}}). I didn't mean broken UTF-8, which is also a bit uncomfortable, but I fix the characters manually. Anyway, you did a good job with that utility! :) Timichal 09:46, 20 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Commons helpper[edit]

Hi, I have 2 things to improve in commons helpper.

  • Could you change log entryes so that <nowiki> is just after <span>, and </nowiki> is just before </span>? Now user links aren't working becouse they are inside <nowiki>.
  • Other improvment is to move license tag from permission= to outside of information template, Here is why it should be outside. License should be like this after informaion : "== License ==\n{{GFDL}}".

Here is sample how i think it should look like: commons:Image:Augustine_Abbey.jpg

Commons Helper, etc.[edit]

Hi magnus,

I have used your tool to upload more than 100 images. I like it a lot.

  1. Is there a homepage for the Push to Commons?
  2. When using the Commons Helper, I have found a couple of bugs.
    1. The instructions after Once done, please add are pretty useless because when you go to upload, you can't go back Perhaps when one hits the upload on commons button a new window could open with new instructions?
    2. The tool adds text like Category:Files by User:evrik from en.wikipedia during the process but the tool itself doesn't prompt you to create the new category and list it under commons:Category:User galleries.

Thanks. --evrik 18:26, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

links to stubs[edit]

hi magnus,

i recently asked myself if it wouldn't be a good idea to mark links to stubs in a third color; this way people like me could create lots of stubs (i would e.g. like to create several thousand spider taxon pages with only systematics and etymology in it), and users would not be disappointed because they expected a full article. and who feels so inclined could fill in the missing information in the years to come. Any idea if this has already been proposed before (probably), or where i could discuss this with a broader circle? thx for any info :) --Sarefo 21:43, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bad old ones[edit]

Hi! I thought you might want to know that Bad old ones seems to have a problem. Thanks for fix, 20th and other days work now. I'm still having problems with the 19th of June. I know that the category has many files, but it was working fine just at week or two ago. -Samulili 12:54, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, and there is also another problem: usage is only reported for en-wiki now. -Samulili 12:56, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

MakeRef suggestion[edit]

Could you add a automatic accessdate bit to m:MakeRef? I envision it being a normal textbox, only with the current date (in ISO standard form) pre-filled in. To handle varying parameter names, just require the MakeRef parameter name to be "accessdate" and only do the auto-filling if there is a parameter of that name in the given template. Great tool, BTW - I'm busy adding all the rest of the options. JesseW, the juggling janitor 06:20, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

BibTex doesn't seem to work yet. In any case, documentation on it would help. JesseW, the juggling janitor 04:32, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
I assume you didn't mean that you've added the auto-accessdate feature, if you did, I can't make it work. JesseW, the juggling janitor 04:34, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

Hello! I'm reading right now your article, and it seems you asked someone to correct the French names. So, I guess that you meant Nain jaune réfugié (Refugee Yellow Dwarf) when you spoke about the Nain jaune réfug review. I'll correct as follow, correct-me if wrong. I'll do some others modifications, mainly based on the French article (mainly, you seem to have mistaken all kinds of Royalists with the Legitimists, which was the name given to the Ultra-royalists after the 1830 July Revolution - more royalists than the king himself, thus. The other well known royalists were the Orleanists, in favor of a constitutional monarchy and whom exerciced power under the July monarchy.) Fare well, Tazmaniacs 12:37, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again! I about finished copy-editing, you might want to review it for grammar etc. Tazmaniacs 13:28, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Weight articles[edit]

The programm is facing problems with brackets in the lemma. They are 'translated ' into -38 and -39 respectively. http://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Geschichte_Irlands_-381801%E2%80%931922-39 --Bahnmoeller 22:52, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Feature Request(?): Wiki -> DocBook[edit]

Hi! I was on irc and one of "Brillant!" ideas came on to me, and Tim Sterling said I should talk to you: how about a feature that allows exporting the contents of mediawiki into DocBook format, either for a single article or for the entire wiki, starting from MainPage and proceeding according to some user-defined rules: like per article, alphabetically, or per Category, Alphabetically...

Well, after an article has been turned into a DocBook document, the user can format it anyway s/he wishes to.

Danke shön for your time :) Project2501a 22:04, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unicode in MakeRef[edit]

I customized the MakeRef tool for the various citation templates at the Vietnamese Wikipedia, but apparently the tool has problems with accented Vietnamese characters in Unicode. I hear that's an issue with PHP, but could you fix the issue in this tool somehow? MakeRef would be very helpful in getting editors to include citations at vi:. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 05:09, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Missing images[edit]

Hi. If its not too much trouble for you, could you please check if your Missing images tools works/why doesn't work with characters like áéűúőüóööí, if they are part of the url. I suspect this might be a bug of Firefox (beta 2), so I would be really glad if you could point towards a browser that works. BTW I find your script most useful on categories without these special characters (unfortunately they are hard to find on the Hungarian wikipedia)

Keep up the good work!

Best regards, --Dami 10:10, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Disregard my last comment please, it works fine on Opera, so i guess its Firefox's fault--Dami 13:09, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia 1.0 (Wikisort)[edit]

A while ago, you said you had completed the rating feature but hadn't enabled it. I wrote a script that does this, so that feature does not have to be enabled. Do you know how to write a bot? Once we have a bot, people can start rating articles. Eyu100 14:45, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Question about Missing Images tool[edit]

Hi! I was wondering if your great missing images tool counts image links that are parts of infoboxes? The tool's report for Supercharger (album) read neither this nor any of the 2 other languages have images., but the infobox on :en's did have one. I just thought I should bring this to your attention. Happy editing! --Merovingian - Talk 19:45, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, great. Thanks for the confirmation! --Merovingian - Talk 20:32, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Freedom fighters[edit]

I read what you said on the Freedom fighter talk page (the quote about what freedom fighters fight).

Very astute observation, I like it! -- Paddyman1989 09:17, 16 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mapsources[edit]

As kvaleberg.com is currently not available, I defined your map source page at Template:Coor URL. -- User:Docu

Map script problems: bug report[edit]

There seems to be something wrong with the map source page: for example, if you go to the URL

http://tools.wikimedia.de/~magnus/geo/geohack.php?params=51_25_N_0_12_W_region:GB_type:adm1st

the page is convinced that the location is

51° 25′ 0″ N 0° 12′ 0″ E

rather than the correct

51° 25′ 0″ N 0° 12′ 0″ W

However, the URL http://tools.wikimedia.de/~magnus/geo/geohack.php?params=51_25_N_1_12_W

produces the correct result.

This seems to be a general problem with the degree parsing or rounding code around zero degrees: for example, the URL

http://tools.wikimedia.de/~magnus/geo/geohack.php?params=0_31_S_0_31_W

resolves to

0° 31′ 0″ N 0° 31′ 0″ E
