How to avoid copyright problems on Wikipedia[edit]

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. We appreciate your contributions, but I'm afraid that some of the content you have added to Regional Rural Bank is against our copyright policies.

In brief, aside from limited and clearly marked quotations, we cannot copy content from any prior publication unless we can prove that it is public domain or compatibly licensed. Most content on the internet is copyrighted, even if it is not marked. Under the US law that governs us, copyright is automatic. If we can prove that content is public domain or compatibly licensed, we can copy it, but we have to note that it is copied to comply with Wikipedia:Plagiarism.

For example, I see that in this edit, you copied content from the description of the book Regional Rural Banks in India ([1]). This has had to be removed.

Hi. I'm afraid that proper paraphrasing on Wikipedia requires actually writing content in your own words. You do not seem to have done this. In this edit, you added the following text:

This page says:

As I mentioned above, this article is also hurt by the fact that a contributor before you copied extensively from another source as well.

I'm sorry, but I cannot help you develop the article, beyond giving you some suggestions for how content needs to be written. Learning how to completely change source material so that it is not a copyright problem or a plagiarism issue can be very challenging. Basically, on Wikipedia, you cannot copy any text that was published previously. There are two exceptions to this: (1) you can copy brief excerpts as clearly marked quotations provided that you give a good reference, that you mention in your text where you got it and that you use it for good reasons. (Wikipedia is bound by United States copyright law, and the US allows fair use quotations if you have good reason to copy content--such as to illustrate a particular point of view.) (2) you can copy as much of you want of content that is public domain or compatibly licensed so long as you give full attribution as explained at Wikipedia:Plagiarism. (Many people think being published in public - such as on the web - makes content public domain. This is not so. Content becomes public domain when its copyright expires (70 years after the death of the author in most cases) or if it is explicitly released. For instance, the United States government has explicitly released copyright on its content, although many governments do not.)

Examples

An example of a brief and clearly marked quotation, used for good reason:

According to biographer John Smith, Jane Doe was "a woman of great integrity, regardless of the provocation".[1]

Sometimes people copy text into quotation marks just because they can't think of another way to put it. It's better to avoid this. Quotes should usually be used where there is good reason, as with this case where we are conveying somebody's opinion.

An example of proper attribution of a public domain text:

This article incorporates text from The Book of Ages, by Fred Tucker, a publication from 1900, now in the public domain in the United States.

(I used a "template" to make that, so I didn't have to type it all. That one comes from Template:PD-old-text.) If you use a lot of the text, you'd put a note at the top of the reference section. Otherwise, you'd put it in the footnote. If that comes up, I can tell you easily how to do it.

Outside of those two cases, you need to make sure that the language and structure of your work is your own. You cannot use striking or distinctive phrases from your sources, and you should ideally not draw too much information from any one source. I would recommend that you read through Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing, as this page can be very helpful in overcoming the trickiest part of rewriting content. --Moonriddengirl ^(talk) 23:35, 13 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
