Could you do me a favour

Please could you tell me if you know anything about the Luton flashover , a dire substation fault which occured many years ago in england and caused both a nation wide outage and a major change in substation design.Cadmium 12:29, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

No idea. I have done some research on insulator flashover in vacuums, which is slightly related to atmospheric insulator flashover. I'll add my (limited) knowledge to the existing flashover page. Thanks for the reply, the Luton flashover was interesting becuase what happened was that an arc from a HT conductor to earth occured. This short then caused circuit breakers to open becuase of the overcurrent. Too many protection devices were activated and then everything went to pot. The defense against such an overreaction in the event of such a fault which I was told about was that a substation has all 'earthed' metal work isolated from earth except for one cable which passes through a current transformer. If current is detected in the earth cable then the location of the fault is clear to the protection electronics. Hence with good design of the protection systems it is possible to open fewer circuit breakers then it would be otherwise. The problem is that I do not have the references to back up this design concept which I was told about some years ago by a substation expert.Cadmium 17:27, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

In my field, pulsed power, it is good practice to have a single earth ground. However, this is mainly for the minimizations of ground loops rather than protection from faults. Good luck finding your info. Mak17f 21:02, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

Uploading non image files

Well if it was in an image format (jpg), you could upload it as a file. Click on upload file in the special pages menu. Otherwise I ll try to find out. Mak17f I ve found some info:

If you want to upload other file types than .jpg or .ogg (like for example .pdf) in newer versions of mediawiki, you have to modify the file, LocalSettings.php, by copying the variable, and it's contents, from DefaultSettings.php. Afterward, you can edit it accordingly: $wgFileExtensions = array( 'png', 'jpg', 'jpeg', 'ogg','doc','xls','ppt','mp3','sxc','pdf' );

You may also need to remove this extension from the filetype blacklist (in /includes/DefaultSettings.php).
