Wikipedia and copyright[edit]

Hello Mangodebango, and welcome to Wikipedia. All or some of your addition(s) to Sean Combs have been removed, as it appears to have added copyrighted material without evidence of permission from the copyright holder. Hi Mangodebango. I have received your email and will be responding to most of your questions on the article talk page so that other interested editors can comment if they like. I am not interested in communicating with you via email, because that way other editors don't have a chance to participate. I am not the "administrator in charge of the page"; Wikipedia does not have such a thing. I am merely one of Wikipedia editors who have edited the page. I will answer one of the questions here: The material that I found was identical to the PBS article had to be removed as it's a copyright violation for you to copy it here. The fact that the same prose might be present at combsenterprises.com or is an official biography prepared by Combs' PR team is immaterial as well, as it's copyright material. You cannot post copyright material on Wikipedia even if you are the copyright holder or have the copyright holder's permission, unless special licensing permissions are in place. That is because Wikipedia aims to be freely distributable and copyable by anyone, and all content must have the appropriate documentation in place before that can happen. This is done to protect the legal rights of copyright holders. Please see Wikipedia:donating copyrighted materials which explains how it works.

Even after reading through the policy, I'm still a little unclear as to how exactly I should copy or relay facts taken from online news sources? Do I need to change the wording and phrasing fairly significantly?

Regarding a previous message from you above for a breach of content from CombsEnterprises.com, what if I was able to have that company release the copyright of the text of the pages of their bio of Sean Combs under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike licence? Hi 331dot, the edits that I made last August were incorrect as they were too closely worded and lifted from a copyrighted reference source. Ultimately, the information should have been rewritten in my own words, and any direct quotations if they were needed could have been placed in double quotation marks. So in answering the question pointed out to me in my declined block request, I shouldn't be copying anything at all unless its short quotes in quotation marks and put all information written into my own words and structure. I'm still a teensy bit concerned that this doesn't really demonstrate an understanding of copyright policy.
