November 2014[edit]

Hello, I'm MusikAnimal. I noticed that you recently removed some content from Hazard symbol  with this edit, without explaining why. In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry, the removed content has been restored. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks. — MusikAnimal talk 22:31, 3 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello, I'm Slashme. Edits that you recently made to Command Post and Khwarazmian Empire seemed to be tests. If you want to practice editing, please use the sandbox. • Hello, Slashme. I did this to add interwiki links to Wikidata. --Maqivi (talk) 12:24, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure I understand you correctly. First, redirects shouldn't normally get interwiki links, and secondly, you shouldn't need to edit the page to create interwiki links. Can you explain more clearly what you were doing? --Slashme (talk) 12:28, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Slashme, I'm editing meta:List of articles every Wikipedia should have/Expanded. To prevent the article from leaving the list, you need to add a link to the redirect, but the redirect cannot be added to Wikidata. To do this, I temporarily remove the redirect. It's the only way. These redirects should be added to the category Category:Redirects with possibilities and create these articles. These are important articles. --Maqivi (talk) 12:51, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I see the problem now. I'm asking around on IRC to see whether there's a better way. --Slashme (talk) 16:17, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
On the Wikidata IRC channel I just got the comment "sadly this is not recommended - there is actually a bot which periodically removes the sitelinks added in this way". You might be wasting your efforts! --Slashme (talk) 16:45, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
OK, Thank you! --Maqivi (talk) 16:47, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Slashme and Maqivi: I'm afraid you got bad advice from IRC. The Wikidata community held a lengthy RfC which concluded that consensus exists for sitelinks to exist which point to redirects on Wikipedia. This is an essential part of the process required to maintain links where articles across Wikipedias are not in 1-to-1 correspondence with Wikidata entities (for example both archaeology (Q23498) and archaeologist (Q3621491) are covered by the single English Wikipedia article Archaeology while the Italian Wikipedia has two separate articles). I think you'll find that there is no longer a bot task to remove sitelinks to redirects, although some editors may still remove the sitelinks through ignorance of the established consensus. --RexxS (talk) 17:19, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@RexxS: Is this method of breaking the redirect, adding the wiki page to WikiData, and then fixing the redirect, the accepted way to do this? --Slashme (talk) 18:44, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Slashme: it's the only way to do it, to the best of my knowledge. When I make the link, I have two tabs open, one for the redirect on Wikipedia, the other for the Wikidata entry. I think it's best to replace the redirect with something like "Temporarily replacing redirect to create a Wikidata link. The target article is Name of the target." and use that as the edit summary as well. If you're well prepared, you can replace the redirect, create the link and restore the redirect within a few seconds, so the inconvenience is minimised. --RexxS (talk) 21:09, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
