The article Colm Kiernan has been proposed for deletion because under Wikipedia policy, all biographies of living persons created after March 18, 2010, must have at least one source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't take offense. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners or ask at Wikipedia:Help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within ten days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. Help request[edit]

Deaths in March 2010

Colm Kiernan happened to be born in London, to Irish parents. He spent his childhood in Ireland and grew up in Ireland and spent his adulthood mostly in Australia, though there were several years spent in Ireland too. His names are Irish and he certainly never considered himself British. If he ever had to say it, he would say he happened to be born in England but was Irish-Australian. There is a page in wikipedia devoted to Irish Australians, and many of these were his friends and he has written about them. In generations previous to his, the Irish hated the English, but his father was the first Irish Ambassador and worked harmoniously with the English. I keep deleting it, because he never considered himself British and would have been very offended to have that written there. Why does it need to be there at all? Thanks Margaretjhamilton (talk) 06:34, 14 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. You put {{t|helpme}} here, on your talk page (with this edit) - the 'tl' cancels the help, so it wouldn't get a response.
To be honest though, this looks like a content discussion question - so, you need to discuss it on Talk:Colm Kiernan, and then ask other interested editors to comment there. If there is a consensus formed to make the change, then you could make it. See WP:BRD and WP:DISPUTE.
If you do still need help with anything, do feel free to put {{helpme}} here on your page, without the 'tl' part, and someone will respond. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  12:01, 15 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Thanks for the note on my own talk page. The self-identification vs. external identification thing is a tricky issue, one that comes up in other contexts as well (identification of people by sexual orientation, etc.) I understand and sympathize with your desire to honor the wishes of the person being written about. However, in terms of what goes into Wikipedia and what doesn't, the primary issues are not "would the person want that information there", but "is that information backed by relaible, secondary sources." In other words, if there's a good bit of information out there in magazine articles and books that describe him as British, then it's appropriate in terms of Wikipedia policy to include that fact there. I have no idea if that's the case. With respect to categories the article is put into, rather than the article text, there will be, I suspect, an additional incentive to look at the question from the point of view of "someone potentially trying to find the article" rather than someone trying to learn about Colm, which would skew things, I'd think, in favor of including an extra category. If there's not much out there that describes him in that way, then the way to make some progress on keeping that tag off is probably to first, do what Chzz suggests and start a discussion on Talk:Colm Kiernan about the subject. Ping me (that is, leave me a note on my Talk page) if and when you do, when I get a spare moment I'll go over and participate in it, and try and dig up some references, and try and get some group of people to form a consensus as the right way to go foward. Once that's done, if there is a consensus for keeping the Brit-related tags off the page, I'd suggest including a comment in the page by the categories saying "please don't change this without discussing it on the Talk page, etc., etc. If folks refuse to engage in a discussion on how to proceed with it but just keep reverting your deletion, then you can follow up via WP:DISPUTE, etc. I know this might seem kinda overwhelming, but while I'll be only on sparadocially the next few days, if you'll start by adding a section to the Talk page on the article I'll try and keep an eye on it and suggest ways forward. That help? --Joe Decker (talk) 14:25, 15 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File source and copyright licensing problem with File:Colm Kiernan at the Vatican.jpg[edit]

File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:Colm Kiernan at the Vatican.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, we also need to know the terms of the license that the copyright holder has published the file under, usually done by adding a licensing tag. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged files may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the file will be deleted 48 hours after 03:50, 25 April 2010 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Leo 03:50, 25 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File source problem with File:COLM_KIERNAN.jpg[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:COLM_KIERNAN.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged per Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, F4. If the image is copyrighted and non-free, the image will be deleted 48 hours after 09:20, 25 April 2010 (UTC) per speedy deletion criterion F7.
