Sammy Betancourt

Hey, Tony!

I hope you're feeling great, doing great! I've been busy the last few days but I'll look at Sammy Betancourt.

We had a lackluster election in NYC...in some citywide races, less than 5% of voters knew who the candidates were, or even cared. The state of the Union, I guess.

It's great to hear from you, I'll look at Sammy soon.

Battle of Fajardo

Hello, I see you expurgated the editorial corrections and detailed account I wrote for what you refer to as the "minor" battle of Fajardo, apparently deeming it too long. Be that as it may, as a point of historical accuracy, the 28 men and officers who held the Fajardo lighthouse and repelled the Spanish attack were US Navy sailors from the USS Amphitrite. The were not US Marines. No disrespect to the US Marines, that's just a fact. The marine involvement was limited to a landing the next morning after the battle was done and the Spanish troops were gone led by Lt. Lejeune from the USS Cincinnati.

For the actual history by the men what were there, in particular, Lt. Atwater who led the boat parties from Amphitrite and was SOP(A) here is a link to the Annual Report of the Secretary of the Navy from 1898. The relevant entries start at the entry on p. 650 by Capt. Fred Rodgers of USS Puritan which the link below will direct you to. The report by Lt. Atwater appears at pp. 652-657. The Fajardo lighthouse "battle" was fought by 2 boatloads of bluejackets from the USS Amphitrite, no other ship. The monitor, USS Amphitrite, did not carry a US Marine complement.

http://books.google.com/books?id=UStHAQAAIAAJ&pg=PA651&lpg=PA651&dq=uss+amphitrite+1898+fajardo+annual+report+secretary+navy&source=bl&ots=k9L2B89Xwb&sig=2K28SIZcQQnQmECWsoL6f-Btegw&hl=en&sa=X&ei=6KNGUuWTArTC2gWMioGwDA&ved=0CCoQ6AEwATgK#v=onepage&q=uss%20amphitrite%201898%20fajardo%20annual%20report%20secretary%20navy&f=false

If you can provide a reference to support the statement that the 28 men and officer who fought the Battle of Fajardo were "marines", please let me know. Otherwise, for historical accuracy, the article should refer to "bluejackets" or "sailors". Regards and Semper Fi to you, — Preceding unsigned comment added by Barnabywoods (talkcontribs) 09:52, 28 September 2013 (UTC)

Tony, thanks for your good words and message, my friend. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. I just did a bit of clean-up on the Pedro Albizu Campos page and left a comment on the talk page, as well.

There is also activity on the Cornelius P. Rhoads page which might be of interest to you.

Profile piece

Just read the profile piece on you - very impressive - well done old bean!

Hola

Yeah, I usually come and go nowadays, but actually decided to (more or less) stick around this time. I have noticed that the project is quite inactive and was actually welcomed quite rudely by someone (that admits to being a puppeteer) named "Ahnoneemoos" for pointing it out. We should probably round up any remaining members and discuss a standard of quality, including a protocol to deal with new entries. - Caribbean~H.Q. 02:43, 5 November 2013 (UTC)

Its excellent, you have been here dealing with that sort of crap on a daily basis, that takes true dedication. There was a moment when I truly intended to simply go away until the status issue is resolved, having to deal with the constant politization of articles that are not relevant to politics is tiresome. BTW, last year there were some issues with the athletes and their citizenship, was that ever resolved? The Puerto Rican citizenship article has been improved and that sort of edit war bait can simply be avoided now.
On the positive side, I did notice the improvement to Roberto Cofresí. The one thing that is missing to further improve the article is a detailed list of his attacks, which would give us at least another 10,000b of prose. The Archivo General de Puerto Rico likely has these documents, but they lack a digitization initiative (which is shameful) and the only documents that have been added to the Internet Archive are civil court cases. - Caribbean~H.Q. 16:42, 5 November 2013 (UTC)

Re: Wikihounding

Tony, as you say we have interacted in the past, so you know that I am not the sort to harass or go on a crusade because something is personal. I believe there is substance to the charge that Mercy11 is editing tendentiously, disruptively, and against policy on a variety of pages, and I have at least 2 other users who agree and would back up an RFC/U which I will prepare if necessary. You yourself should understand what the problem is here; Mercy has shown through the discussions on Talk:Cornelius P. Rhoads, Talk:Pedro Albizu Campos, Talk:Museo de Arte de Ponce, and Talk:Puerto Rico - which are all related to the same subject area that Mercy has trouble with - that Mercy cannot separate his own point of view from what the article should reflect. This is not a form of harassment as you seem to suggest, but a clear and motivated policy issue with Mercy's editing that can be shown in each case. The policy page does say that "The important component of wikihounding is disruption to another user's own enjoyment of editing, or to the project generally, for no overriding reason." I have made clear the substance of my concern, which is in no way personal and entirely based on a pattern of editing which could someday make its way to ArbCom. Mercy11 has also refused to answer for creating the nonsense redirect FBI files on Puerto Ricans to FBI files on Elvis Presley, which as far as I know is straightforward vandalism. Can you explain that? Andrevan@ 22:08, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

The main problem is this: Wikipedia:Tendentious editing#One who deletes the cited additions of others. Andrevan@ 22:17, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

Indeed you have certainly been a good wiki-friend to me over the years. I hope everything is good with you and I'm not asking you to get involved since I know you are friends with Mercy11 as well. Best wishes. Andrevan@ 22:53, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

Hermann Bottcher picture

Tony hello, we spoke in an email long time ago-maybe 2008? since then was able to get the long claimed lost service record for Capt. Bottcher from St. Louis, MO. (I actually went there in person to make colr scans) This is a story in and of itself. Wild stuff. Here's someof the contents:

http://hermannbottcher.org/bottcher_scanned_personnel_files.pdf

In addition to this, through a miracle or some kind of intervention, I was able to track down the sole surviving relative of Hermann out west here and she donated pictures, letters and other personally items to this effort and I was hoping to at least place one of the pictures on the site. To tell the truth, I am a voracious reader and armchair researcher- but I'm not really up to the in's and outs of the copywrite world or the wikipedia HTML code. I am getting better though. I also have trouble spelling...

we have some common intersections. Tony, I would greatly appreciate any help, advice or ideas you might have and hope to hear from you soon. all the best Stephen "esteban" MartinEstebanMartin (talk) 05:19, 1 December 2013 (UTC)

The Foxardo Affair

Hey Tony, I am finding conflicting reports about the actual date that David Porter invaded Fajardo, some are even going as back as 1824. This suddenly became relevant, because some old books (all published in the US) are listing Porter as the one that commanded the Grampus in Cofresí's capture. I have yet to list this theory anywhere is the article, because Sloat was clearly involved in the process and based on the letters that he exchanged with the Navy's top brass, he was also present during the execution. However, I do believe that Porter likely commanded the failed attempt by Beagle (in 1823) and this has led to the confusion. - Caribbean~H.Q. 10:45, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

That's terrible, one of the reasons that I haven't been as active (besides a computer dying) has been that my mother has a COPD (chronic bronquitis) and things occasionally get complicated. You have done too much for this project, so please take care of yourself even if that means that you don't find time to be active, family always comes first. And remember that as Boricuas, we never give up.
About Porter, I am amazed that this incident is only briefly mentioned in our school textbooks. Based on the US' reaction to Spain's fury, it seems clear that this was a full-blown diplomatic crisis, one that most likely contributed to the Spanish-American War. - Caribbean~H.Q. 05:07, 7 December 2013 (UTC)

Hello old friend

I have been editing under the User:Ahnoneemoos alias for the past four years. I hope you still remember me (User:Joseph Dwayne) and User:Maio (alias through which we met back in 2004). It has been incredible what we have created in just a decade, and evenmoreso what you have become for Puerto Rico through your own work and through Wikipedia. I still, of course, love you, regardless of how many times we have had differences throughout these nine years of friendship. My apologies for being incognito for so long. Hello once again, my dear friend. :) —Joseph | Talk 00:24, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

Tony, I'm so sorry to hear about health issues. If you ever need me to write an article for you feel free to drop me the references and I will write the prose for you. Regarding my aliases, yes, I always stick to one single username at a time; I don't see myself changing this one. I think Wikipedia is very stable now and I can stick around just fixing stuff here and there. —Ahnoneemoos (talk) 18:57, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

Saludos, I believe that we may be missing a flag known as "La bandera roja de la conspiración" in this article. As Puerto Ricans, we were always taught that the flag of the Grito is the first, but this one was created in 1838. The actual descriptions are sparse (at best), but according to one of my friends, this flag was red and featured a white cross. He says that it likely resembled a hybrid between the flag used by the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party and the flag of England. Thoughts? - Caribbean~H.Q. 13:42, 12 December 2013 (UTC)

I did a lengthy internet search (for some reason, this flag keeps getting linked to the pirate) and at least the fact that Buenaventura Valentín Quiñones (the man said to have designed it) was involved in an uprising seems legit. He actually died in El Morro after being jailed (see a brief summary here). Unfortunately, at least on the web, the details are quite fuzzy. That seems to be a problem surrounding all of the early independence movement, since even details about the San Germán movement of 1809-11 are extremely scarce. - Caribbean~H.Q. 18:34, 12 December 2013 (UTC)
I agree, both him and Vizcarrondo seem like fascinating figures that have been forgotten by history, Valentín himself was one the first men that were willing to die for their beliefs in Puerto Rico. We should do something to end that anonymity. Also, the connection between these movements and the post-Bolivar Colombia is simply extraordinary and the kind of thing that provides the best food for thought. Could Antonio Valero de Bernabé be involved in these movements? We certainly don't know what he did during the second half of his life...
BTW, that book briefly mentions this interesting bit from one of the witnesses: "El Cabo José Dominguez sostiene que habia banderas bordadas que se habian de dar al viento el día de la jarana" - Caribbean~H.Q. 19:27, 12 December 2013 (UTC)
Here is another one. - Caribbean~H.Q. 16:26, 13 December 2013 (UTC)
The account of the interrogations seems to imply that they were jailed under the assumption that this was a revolution. Valentín's death is certainly shady and I don't think that he would have been killed over a simple reform protest. Of course, this was done shortly after Miguel de la Torre left office and he was notoriously paranoid about the independence movement, so that mentality may have lingered. In my opinion, even if they only wanted to organize a reform movement, if the flag was really flown during the other stages of El Grito, that would make it retroactively relevant. Unfortunately, I can't confim this based on the material available in the web. - Caribbean~H.Q. 23:05, 16 December 2013 (UTC)
