Cornell Coaches template

The template which i linked in the heading; you reverted my edit on that template. I have no problems with the format that you put the other templates in, but i just thought that my change made it more aesthetically appealing. Plus not everyone of those coaches is exactly notable. template:2008 Kansas Basketball

Stop removing the names of roster players from the template. Just because some of the players were walk-ons or didn't play significant minutes does not mean that their names should not or would not be included on a template. Wikipedia is about providing the best and most information possible, not ignoring or trying to remove information about the players who won't be NBA players. Since your concern rests in some players not meeting the notability requirements you should have stated that immediately instead of just undoing the edits and leaving the original navbox, which contained individuals who also would not meet notability standards. Stanley Cup Champion templates

I've noticed that you have begun making templates for the teams that win the Stanley Cup. As a member of WP:HOCKEY, I would have to suggest that it's not really the best thing to get into. We've had several discussions about whether to keep those or not, and the consensus has been to not keep them for hockey. The reason being that they clutter the page, and for multiple winners it just looks terrible. A prime example that is always cited in this case is Henri Richard, a member of the Montreal Canadiens. Richard won the Cup 11 times in his career. Having 11 templates like that would just ruin the page. Any comments you have regarding that would be welcome at the project page, WT:HOCKEY. A heads up though, while I'm personally torn between trying to limit navigation boxes on pages and providing information, the general consensus has been to keep things like this off the majority of pages. Hi MasonP, I see you've added to the Infobox that Gehrig was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee. I don't believe that's correct. According to the HOF article, the Veterans Committee wasn't formed until 1953. It is true that Gehrig was elected to the HOF in 1939 and the 5-yr period was waived, but as I recall from various books on the subject, he was voted by the sportswriters.

Also, the cited reference does not say he was elected by the Veterans Committee.

At the moment, I'm just checking my Watchlist on my Blackberry while waiting for a tow truck (long story), so I can't really look into this further at the moment, but I figured the best course would be to bring this to your attention in the meantime. JGHowes talk - 20:19, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

Disambiguation

Just something I noticed you doing once or twice and realized you might be unaware of the proper way to disambiguate. When it comes to disambiguating names, its policy to always use the middle name before you use brackets such as (baseball). Anyways just thought I would let you know since I noticed you moving things from the middle name version to the bracket version. P. J. Brown

Hi MasonP, are you sure that P. J. Brown has the proper spacing? Since December, WP:NCP#Middle names and abbreviated names has said, "Generally, use the most common format of a name", and it no longer mentions spaces after punctuation. —LOL (talk) 15:57, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, I've noticed those inconsistencies. I'm surprised that nobody's been bold enough to make all the changes according to NCP. You're the second person to move the article back to "P. J. Cornell Law

That whole section about the "consistently outranking Columbia/NYU Law" is preposterous to say the least. To the best of my knowledge it has occurred once in the past decade or so. Also, the statistics it cited were from the July 2005 bar exam. Hardly breaking news. Check out http://www.ilrg.com/rankings/law/ if you would like some updated statistics. Re: Category: Oklahoma City NBA players

I reverted your edits and restored the category because, since they're on the team's roster, that officially makes them players for that team (if it doesn't, what does?)-Should any of them get traded or released before playing a single game for OKC (highly unlikely), you can remove that category from the page. Why Would You Add a Template to a Player That is Obviously Not the Same Person?

Joe Gordon

Gordon has been elected to the Hall of Fame but will not be a member until he is inducted in the summer. This is comparable to Obama being elected president in November, but he won't actually be president until he is sworn in. Gordon should not be added to the Template:Baseball Hall of Fame second basemen until he is a full member. This whole issue was hashed out on Wikipedia when Cal Ripken and Kirby Puckett were voted in. If you go to the official Hall of Fame website, they make it quite clear that someone is not a member of the Hall until induction. 24.106.223.2 (talk) 18:35, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

Template: Baltimore Orioles owners

The Jerold Hoffberger entry is still loaded with inaccuracies and needs to be fixed. Hoffberger and his National Brewing Co. didn't become the Orioles' largest shareholder until 1965. Clarence Miles held total control of the team in its first two years. He was replaced by James Keelty Jr. as president and Joseph Iglehart as chairman of the board. Lee MacPhail later succeeded Keelty. Iglehart actually held the largest stake in the franchise before his departure in 1965. All of these facts are detailed in The Baseball Business by James Edward Miller. Read more about this book here, and here.

2009 NIT

At first I was against the overlinking, but I later read the following sentence in WP:MOSLINK: "Link only the first occurrence of an item. A link that had last appeared much earlier in the article may be repeated, but generally not in the same section. (Table entries are an exception to this; each row of a table should be able to stand on its own.)" The bracket is technically a table, so the overlinking should be okay in this sense. NAIA and NCAA DII Men's Basketball

Hey, I noticed you were the creator of the NCAA DII tournament pages. Keep up the good work! I am trying to get pages for the NAIA tournaments. I'm generally done with 1938-1959, and 2000-present. Any ideas for me? I'd like to do some table with teams by berth add something more information than just a bracket. But it is pretty time consuming. At this point I have a basic frame for all 1960s lined up. If you have any suggestions, tips or tricks to make it easier, let me know. The sources and everything should all be on there. I'm trying to make it consistent all throughout the years. Also I add a portal link for your discussion tabs. The box is called 1996 World Series champions, not roster. Each of the players added have 1996 World Series rings (Example: Dwight Gooden and Pat Kelly), and while maybe not on the World Series roster, they nonetheless played a factor on the 1996 team. Each member of a specific World Series champion deserves credit for his part and not all of them are September Call-ups, Dwight Gooden had the greatest moment for the Yankees during 1996, Pat Kelly had been with the team since 1991, Ricky Bones arrived via trade, Jorge Posada, who was on the original template, was a call-up and wore 55 not 20, but all received rings and are part of the 1996 World Series champions. The fact is they are all considered World Series Champions, everyone from Derek Jeter and John Wetteland to Ricky Bones and Matt Howard are considered a part of the 1996 World Series Champions. Look at Jared Lorenzen of the Super Bowl Champion, he didn't play in the playoffs, but is he a Super Bowl Champion? Yes he is. How many games they played doesnt matter they were part of a World Series chamionship team. Let me ask you this do you have any proof that they weren't part of the team? Maybe you should look at a player's transactions to see if they were indeed still part of the team. And if you happened to get traded (Ex: Garciaparra) then they are clearly not on that team of in the organization. At least Bones was still in the organization and could have been called up if he was needed. If you happen to view the 2000 World Series Champion New York Yankees photo, Roberto Kelly, Chris Turner and Allen Watson are all in that World Series photo, but according to you they aren't worthy enough to be included, but the New York Yankees team clearly recognizes these players as part of their World Series Champion roster. Leading the league in wins; Deletion of material

Hi ... can you please give us some guidance as to your thoughts on the issue discussed at [1]?

In short, I input a sentence that pitcher x was leading the league in wins. That is mentioned in more than one article, and in fact the focus of at least one -- as reflected by its title.

A fellow editor believes the sentence should be deleted now. I am happy with it being deleted when out of date, but believe that deletion is not mandated now. Milwaukee Brewers categories

I understand your point, but even if I accept that my title can cause as much confusion as yours did, I'm not sure that trading confusions is the solution. Perhaps there's a compromise? "Milwaukee Brewers (American Association) players" isn't an option, because there were of course two teams with that name. If that's not an option, and neither my name nor yours can accurately describe the team without potentially confusing somebody, what other options do you see? Looking at your examples, there is only one San Diego Padres minor league club with a category, and Baltimore Orioles category] under that name (did I mess up the search? No sign of one on Babe Ruth's page). What's different about the Milwaukee Brewers is that there were several distinct minor league franchises which used that name, and players have already been misclassified as a result of this confusion. Stats in Infobox

Because according to the Template:Infobox MLB player it is for the players most important stats. And for Pie Traynor, home runs is not one of them.--Yankees10 18:04, 25 June 2009 (UTC)

Fine. My personal reason for not having these statistics is that I think it should be the players most important stats in this order: batting average, hits or home runs depending on which was more, RBI, and then stolen bases if they had a lot in there career. And in the case for Pie Traynor he was not known for home runs or stolen bases and did not finish with a high total in either category, therefore there inclusion is not necessary. UM You mean NPOV as in Written by a Red Sox Fan?

As a Yankee Fan I think I was pretty damn fair, including numerous sources. TWO OF THEM FROM BOSTON EG The Boston Herald, & Boston Globe. I also went on to say any wins or records that may have been obtained by the Red Sox, with Players whom MAY have used PED's DO NOT deserve to have an asterisk added to them, see article talk page unless you deleted that as well. I would say I have been very fair considering. WP:Hornbook -- a new WP:Law task force for the J.D. curriculum

I'm asking Wikipedians who are interested in United States legal articles to take a look at WP:Hornbook, the new "JD curriculum task force".

Our mission is to assimilate into Wikipedia all the insights of an American law school education, by reducing hornbooks to footnotes.

  • Over the course of a semester, each subpage will shift its focus to track the unfolding curriculum(s) for classes using that casebook around the country.
  • It will also feature an extensive, hyperlinked "index" or "outline" to that casebook, pointing to pages, headers, or {{anchors}} in Wikipedia (example).
  • Individual law schools can freely adapt our casebook outlines to the idiosyncratic curriculum devised by each individual professor.
  • I'm encouraging law students around the country to create local chapters of the club I'm starting at my own law school, "Student WP:Hornbook Editors". Using WP:Hornbook as our headquarters, we're hoping to create a study group so inclusive that nobody will dare not join.

What you can do now:

Section Writing

I've been thinking about your new section on my discussion page and I thought in some ways it is correct, but I honestly enjoy editing and updating the stats as it is being done even if it takes me 30 or 40 edits to do it. It would be much less work to do it all at once (for example, at the end of the day), but I still enjoy updating at the time a strikeout or home run is recorded. I just wanted to tell you my opinion.

Article Editing Conflict

Hi I've seen you undo my edits on the List of Major League Baseball leaders in career wins and I thought of a way to peacefully settle this conflict. I will leave it to you to edit the all-time wins list and the all-time saves list, and you leave me to edit the usual articles i do like the all time homer list, all time hits list, and all time strikeouts list. I understand where you're coming from, but keep in mind that neither of us WP:OWN any article on WP. While I don't have any plans to work on other lists for the time being, please see the discussion at WP:BASEBALL where some other editors agreed with the points I addressed with you in our previous conversation (while noting that policing it would be very time-consuming). So no, I don't plan on editing other stat lists for the time being, but that may change or someone else may come along. Sports TFDs

I imagine an effort to pare down sports templates is an extensive one. However, if you want to be consistent about redundant templates, in addition to athletic team and coaches templates, templates such as retired numbers templates should be removed. You may want to consider nominating templates such as Template:Wolverines Football Retired Numbers, which I modeled off of another similar template. You Need to Start Checking Your Work

Regarding this edit:

  1. {{DEFAULTSORT}} is set to PAGENAME by default per WP:DEFAULTSORT#Default_sort_key. Ergo, adding {{DEFAULTSORT:University Of Rochester}} to the University of Rochester article is unnecessary.
  2. While "Goerge → George" may be correct, you changed "Goergen → Georgen", which is patently not how Robert B. Goergen spells his name.

Your good faith edit to Syracuse University as seen here mistakenly corrected Brethen to Brethren. In this case Brethen is a name and is correctly rendered, see here. WP:AWB is not infallible and is often caught out by foreign language terms and proper nouns. You need to take a little time to question AWB's wisdom in each edit. I really don't know how to use WP. I think this page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_100_Major_League_Baseball_strikeout_pitchers should add another section. Most strikeouts is not the perfect barometer for the best strikeout pitcher. In my opinion K/9, K/BB, and K per 27 atbats would be a better indicator of true strikeout dominance.

Adding Citations to Agnes Scott Wiki

Hi, I noticed that you updated the ASC wiki several times recently and was wondering if you had time and inclination to help me get started with editing this entry. There is a lack of references in several places. I have a relative that attends the school, so I have an interest in the subject matter.

This is my first attempt to do anything in wikipedia, so I don't even know where the bathroom is yet. I thought I might try making one example citation to get started. If I got the hang of it, I would continue to add the missing citations until the problems were cleared up.


Example I have the book, A Full and Rich Measure - 100 Years of Educating Women at Agnes Scott College, 1889-1989. On page 6 is this sentence, "In 1907, the Southern Association awarded full accreditation, and the eighteen-year-old school in Decatur became the first accredited college or university in Georgia." This could be the citation for the middle paragraph of the ASC History section. (The middle paragraph should be rewritten slightly to more fully coincide with this reference.)

Question I like the way the Reference section is done in the Jane Austen wiki. Would it be ok to change the Agnes Scott Reference section along those lines? i.e. Citation No/Book Name, copyright, etc/Page No.

Concern I hesitate because I read in one of the Wikipedia getting-started pages that footnotes should be added in the style of the existing article. But this existing ASC article is deficient in that regard. So, is it ok to change the style?

Hi. I've seen you editing the List of Major League Baseball leaders in career stolen bases. This is kind of weird because there also is a List of Major League Baseball players with 300 stolen bases. Hi I saw that you renamed and greatly expanded the List of Major League Baseball leaders in career ERA. I do not mean to offend you, but I want to ask that when the 2010 baseball season comes, stats are updated as games go, not after each day. The only reason I ask you this favor is because I created this article, now I'm not saying I own this article but I was the creator and I'd like to keep it the way it's been running. Thanks. Well, you just said that you don't own the page, but this very much sounds like a WP:OWN issue. It's hard to say what will be the course of action six or so months from now, but real-time updating of articles is not a preferable method of producing stable lists for WP (as we've discussed before). Also, discussions on WP:Baseball have shown that other editors are of the same opinion. Once you create an article, list or whatnot, it belongs to the project with no conditions. Bill Dickey

Hi, nice work on the baseball items I've come across. Just did a edit sweep on the Bill Dickey article (Hall of Fame mention to stand-alone second graph, created sections for the page, etc.) and removed a paragraph (See discussion page). Would you mind taking a look at it for accuracy etc. Thanks. Another item, I've noticed quite a few Hall of Fame pages have no photos, even as major as Ford and Paige--maybe a group of baseball editors can list the pages without photos in one place to be worked on. Fair enough. Like I said, I put it back in because it was in your propviosu edit. I'm fine with hits taking it's place though. I know we both do a lot of work on similar areas, and that you do a lot of good work on the infoboxes, so I don't want to just needlessly butt heads. Just want to be on the same page, that's all. I think sometimes the navboxes (not necessarily your edits) only use stats to portray players in the most positive light possible, where that should be the role and is pushing a POV. I don't know if I agree that they had to be on the postseason roster. Nady and Wang weren't left off by choice, as were players like Edwar, Albaladejo, and others. Nady and Wang were honored in the parade specifically, while others who were left off by choice weren't at the parade. That's a pretty subjective standard, anybody can be honored at a parade and each team woul probably do their "parade" differently. If you go back to the discussion we had about these issues at WP:Baseball consensus was in the direction of limiting navboxes to players that were on the post-season roster. A number of editors wanted to limit it further to just the WS roster, though I am not supportive of going that far. The discussion at WP:Baseball that I referenced can be found here. Pittsburgh Pirates owners

Hi there.

We seem to have a bit of an issue. According to email correspondence from the Benswanger family, he was never an owner. He ran the club and the front of the house after the death of Dreyfuss in '32, Florence Dreyfuss inherited and owned the franchise until the sale in '46. MLB seems to have that wrong. College sports coaching record tables

Masonpatriot, I noticed some of your recent edits to add head coaching record tables for college basketball coaches, e.g. Edward J. Hickox. A few items:

  • Team fight names should appear in the subheadings.
  • Individual basketball seasons should be expressed in the form of 1940–41, not 1940–1941.
  • Also endashes, not hyphens, should be used to punctuate records and tied conference finishes. See Phog Allen for good example the preferred formatting.

NCAA D-II tournament infobox

Mason, I noticed you created a new template for NCAA Division II basketball tournaments. Not bad, but I noticed one change that needs to be made.

Unlike the D-I and D-III tournaments, in which four teams advance to the final site, the D-II tournaments for both men and women have eight teams reaching the finals site. The NCAA doesn't even use "Final Four" to describe the semifinals—but does use (and has trademarked) "Elite Eight" to describe its D-II final rounds.

My suggestion:

  • Keep the "Champions" and "Runner-Up" fields the same.
  • Replace "Final Four" in the "Semifinalists" field with "Elite Eight".
  • Add a "Quarterfinalists" field (listing all four), including a tag indicating Elite Eight counts.

Subpage appears in categories

Hello.

Isn't it customary to suppress the categories on pages like User:Masonpatriot/Working page 2? It's showing up on several categories.

Normally it is done by adding a front colon like this in markup [[:Category:Lists of schools in Connecticut]] which renders as Category:Lists of schools in Connecticut, and disables the function. However, any sorting key then has to be punted in favor of proper display, which is maybe why you (intentionally?) broke the category markup on another subpage of yours... ...so you probably already know all of this :)
