Your recent edit to the Mississippi Democratic Party article, and why I reversed it

This is an encyclopedia article. Simply pasting in most of one random year's platform, in addition to being duplicative of content on the party's own website, creates an undue emphasis on the current platform, a kind of bias we call "recentism". We also do not include the 2011 platform, for the same reason we don't include the 1927 platform, or the 1857 platform: it is a primary rather than a secondary source. If you can find articles discussing the evolution of the party platform over the decades, they would be more suitable as sources to draw on for discussion of the platform. I just want to touch bases on the edits to the above referenced article. I realize that it must be frustrating to have your edits removed by other editors. This often happens in a collaborative environment. Orange Mike has offered some constructive advice to ensure the article meets the encyclopedic guidelines. Please refrain from violating copyright laws by using content from outside sources, including the Mississippi Democratic Party's official website. All encyclopedic content must be presented in your own words. Additionally, it is important to avoid any content pertaining to recent events, elected officials, or party platforms. The article should provide an overview and presentation of the subject's existence from establishment to the current day. Make sure to review the article's discussion page and work to incorporate the ideas presented there into your article. Additionally, please make sure to document your work as it is added to the article. Do not save your work and wait to add the references at a later time. • Hi, I'm having a lot of trouble finding the information I wanted to for the Mississippi Democratic Party page. I've been researching all afternoon and can hardly find any information regarding the history of the party. Additionally, I realize that I cannot copy/paste things onto my page: I was going to go back and re-word it. Am I missing something that I should be doing with the platform/ideals of the party? For that information from other sources that you plan to go back and reword later, perhaps it would be a good idea to work in your sandbox rather than on the article page itself to avoid the appearance of plagiarism. Sgelbman (talk) 01:52, 8 November 2011 (UTC)

Actually, you should please refrain from putting copyrighted content on Wikipedia at all, even in your Sandbox. Having copyright violations in our edit histories is not a good thing, since each edit persists unless specifically deleted, even if it isn't the "current" edit. I realize this makes things inconvenient, but Wikipedia needs to observe copyright, even in the Sandbox. Two delegates????

Really? I'll respect your source, but I clearly recall that there were two entire rival delegations fighting for the right to be considered the "real" DPM delegation. Fannie Lou Hamer and Aaron Henry were among the members of the Loyalist delegation that year. --Orange Mike | Talk 23:21, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

Referencing for the Democratic Party of the State of Mississippi article may need to rely on books and information culled directly from the library.
