Your changes to sources from "www.cas.sc.edu" to "deflem.blogspot.com"

Hello Mathieu, I see you are making a lot of changes to sources, from "www.cas.sc.edu" to "deflem.blogspot.com". I think I understand what you are doing -- you are changing from the ones hosted at South Carolina to your own Blogspot site. However, the problem is that "blogspot.com" is generally forbidden by Wikipedia as a reliable source. Is there a problem with keeping the links to the University of South Carolina? Are you leaving the department or are you otherwise worried that your source material might not be available in the future there? If "deflem.blogspot.com" will be the only source where these sources can be found, Wikipedia may have to make an exception for them. Wikipedia would generally prefer to have the sources hosted at a University site. Can you explain what you're doing here? As it stands right now, all your changes will probably be reverted, and you may potentially be blocked from editing for what appears to be spamming. Zad68 18:27, 21 June 2012 (UTC)

Yes, all my files on the USC server will soon be removed, possibly as early as tomorrow. I have posted all content on my blog. Besides, these are all online copies of regular academic print publications. They are not mere online posts. If Wikipedia would not allow copies of print publications posted on a blog to be added, all my content would not be able to be used, which would be very ironic given that my writings are used a lot by the editors and the users of Wikipedia precisely because they are available online. --MD

Thank you for this... hopefully Jauerback will get you unblocked and can direct you on what to do next. I think what Wikipedia needs to do is make an exception for XLinkBot to allow the links to your blogspot. Also, to prevent future editors from reverting your edits as blogspot spam, you may have to modify how you are doing the updates to the links. This may require some discussion and red-tape, but please be patient. We as Wikipedia editors do indeed want to be able to access your content, and we'll make it right. Okay, you're now unblocked. However, I honestly don't know the process about getting your site an exception. Probably no... Here's what we have to do:

1. I will work with the editor who runs XLinkBot to try to get your blogspot site 'whitelisted' so that XLinkBot doesn't revert it. Most of your edits were reverted automatically by XLinkBot. This will take several days to get put in place.
2. You will have to do something when you make your changes to notify the editors who patrol new changes that what you're doing is not spamming. Many editors see "blogspot" and revert on sight. Suggestion is:

In the meantime, I have substituted my University pages with new html files that contain redirects, either to my new blog in general, or to specific new locations of their counterparts. See, for instance, the references to publications by me on this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferdinand_Tönnies But, of course, this is only a temporary fix. So I appreciate the above system that was suggested. --MD

Hello M. Deflem, so I worked with the owner of XLinkBot and "deflem.blogspot.com" is now on the 'whitelist' so the bot should not automatically revert your updates. (I have to tell you this: Be aware that if links to deflem.blogspot.com start to appear to have a commercial motivation, i.e. driving traffic to your site to sell books, etc., that will be cause to have the XLinkBot exception and the links removed.) So this takes care of item #1 above. So, go ahead and try out item #2, make some link updates and use the comment and edit summary I suggested. Do this for some links and see if the updates do not get reverted by either XLinkBot or human editors. If that works, go ahead and update the rest. Wiki strikes again, it appears, as a few academic sources I added, relevant to selected pages, were deleted for the wholly unfounded reason of 'self-promotion'. How can that be when these sources are available online for all to read and pertinent to the selected wiki entry? Besides, other wiki users routinely add sources authored by me to wiki pages, at times rather marginally relevant too. So thanks to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:AndyTheGrump for suppressing relevant information. (Update: happy to see said editor has now retired.)
