Copyright is applied to any content that you publish - even if a website does not display its copyright information, it can be safely assumed that the content is provided under a proprietary license, which is not compatible with the GFDL license that Wikipedia requires. Also, even if you modify a particular text, it is still not your own work - instead, it is considered a derivative, or even worse, an attempt to hide plagiarism. Obviously, it is not recommended that you do this - instead, please consider writing the article from scratch. You should cite sources if you include controversial or key facts in your articles.
