Stop adding logos to derbies[edit]

WP:FUR is required for all images. Without a fair use rationale, adding copyrighted images is a copyright violation. Walter Görlitz (talk) 14:39, 28 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'll accept the soccer/football reversions because those logos feel more official than baseball cap insignias. However, I'm curious about what you said about "Fair Use Rationale". Does that mean logos are approved for one part of Wikipedia but not another part of Wikipedia? Because that seems out of character for the site. The cap insignias I added to baseball rivalries were to make the baseball rivalry pages consistent with each other, as was the one NFL rivalry between the Dolphins and the Buccaneers. Also, the Beltway series between the Nationals and the Orioles only had the Nationals' logo Now it has neither. What I was doing was to make sure the pages were consistent. I'll accept the soccer reversions because that makes those pages consistent with each other, as admittedly, my edits could not do as there are too many. However, I request that you undo your reversions for any baseball and NFL football rivalries so the pages are consistent with a page like Yankees-Red Sox Rivalry. Wikipedia is bound by US copyright laws. If a logo has a copyright—not all logos can be copyrighted, but I'll speak to that point after the initial one—US copyright laws state that any page or article that uses it has to either apply for an exemption to the copyright law or pay for the use of that image. Fair use usually applies in two situations: in an article discussing the creation or evolution of a logo (and that article has to be sourced, just like every other Wikipedia article) or in articles that discuss the subject that the logo represents.

In other words, a copyrighted logo can be use on a team page, provided a FUR is supplied at the image. They are not usually allowed on season articles.

An album cover can be used on an article about the album, provided a FUR is supplied at the image, but not on the band's or artist's article even if the cover is only an image of the band or artist. The cover could be used on an article about a notable album art creator, provided a FUR is supplied at the image and the album art is explained on the article.

If, however, the logo is simply a text or numeric rendering, it may not qualify for copyright protection, in which case, the logo can be free used.

Let's look at the edits you made to North London derby. You added File:Arsenal FC.svg. A quick click on the image (or the link here) shows that the logo is indeed copyrighted. Similarly, File:Tottenham Hotspur.svg is copyrighted. Most of what you need to know is on Wikipedia:Copyrights. Please {{ping}} me here if you have any further questions.
