Fundraising

If I understand your request correctly, that you would like to interview Wikipedians and the results of these interviews may end up in fundraising videos or you may use my photograph and words for the same purpose, I'm probably not your best bet.

Ok, well. Now I'm intrigued. What value might my attitude add to your fundraising efforts? In a nutshell: I have devoted a lot of time and effort to writing about 30 articles, some of which get 5,000 hits a day. My writing is read by millions of people. Working with other editors can be immensely satisfying. Also, I still have an overdue library bill for $468 from what I've used to write articles. At the same time, working with editors can be dispiriting and more frustrating than almost anything I've known. I call this a balanced attitude. Others might call it cynical or bitter.

Also, I'm half a notch above Quasimodo in the "aesthetically pleasing" category. --Moni3 (talk) 21:02, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi Matthew, I see you left a message on my talk page yesterday and then erased it, I guess because you noticed I had already had a similar note from Aaron on 23rd Sept. May I suggest you pick a few prolific contributers on Wikipedia:List of Wikipedians by number of DYKs? Or people like Raul654 (talk · contribs) and Howcheng (talk · contribs) who are responsible for many good things on MainPage for the longest time? Hope this helps. While I am flattered to be invited, I also cherish my anonymity (the post above yours on my talk page was from someone indef blocked today for threatening editors and telling some of them to hide their real life identities). Since I see above that you would want to use my picture (which I suspect would only scare donors away) and real name, I will have to decline. I am a strong believer in Wikipedia's mission and ideals, and as much as I would like to express that to those who haven't a clue about how this project works, I strongly value my anonymity here. Hi Matthew, I thought I'd just drop a note here to say that I enjoyed my interview with you this evening. It was all quite interesting, and entirely pain-free; and as someone who values his privacy, I can't say that I found the questioning intrusive. Anyway, I would certainly say to anyone who's uncertain about accepting a request for an interview, either now or in the future, that they need have no worries about it. (And just for the record, I don't know Matthew, and don't have any connection with the Wikimedia Foundation or anyone associated with it.) I can't imagine the hours of work and the extreme difficulty trying to piece together the hundreds of suggestions and comments that you receive from all of us. Also, the parts that we don't see; the dedication beyond the WP pages to address these Bills...well, thank you for all that you do. Headline/structure of landing page

Thank you for all your work on the blackout action. I'm really glad WMF is doing this.

I just posted a note at Wikipedia:SOPA_initiative/Proposed_Messages#Crucial_copy_editing about what I think was the latest version of the landing-page message. I think the small change I made is crucial for reducing blowback from less sympathetic would-be readers. The headline is different but the content is the same. The basic idea is to make it clear that the blackout is in defense of Wikipedia, not just because Wikipedians don't like the legislation. I understand that the message needs to be a call for action. But the headline needs to do something else. People will react emotionally to a black page where their article should be. The headline needs to start there – with that feeling – and then the message needs to transform that feeling into the action we need them to take.

Hi Matthew. Thanks for starting the 4 millionth article article. is it propoer to say article article? I thought by now, people would have been helping develop the article, but unfortunately that's not the case. Hello again, Mathew. Looks like my plan fizzled out. I was certain that if people saw an IP writing something, they would jump in to make sure it was written by a registered user. Oh well, the best laid plans of mice and men... as they say. I'll add a few more things to the draft and call it good, just in case you'd like to use any of it.

Could I change my mind about attribution? If it's possible, I'd like to say something like "An unregistered user helped with the preparation. Unregistered user are also able to contribute to Wikipedia." I'm going to add something to the draft article about the the 500 millionth edit, which was recently made by an unregistered user. I was really thankful the Signpost editor came in at the last minute to clean up my rough draft as I was just throwing out ideas hoping it would spark others to contribute. I'm not sending anybody any e-mails today. My sister may have sent me a virus marked "Private mail"

Please don't open anything marked "private mail". I think I avoided any problems, but she is having major difficulties. I'll spend part of the day clearing my caches and resetting my passwords, but not sending any e-mails until I'm sure I don't have it. Hopefully that won't disrupt Skype. BTW, I have a Mac and she has a PC. Those folks with PCs ....
