I am in Germany.... a bit far away. :/ I suggest making a more locally targeted list, such as those members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Washington or Wikipedia:WikiProject Seattle, and using a geonotice. I am sure that will be more effective. Using services such as meetup.com and social media can also be helpful. Greetings from WikiProject Open Access[edit]

Hi Max, here's what I'm just posting to other members of the project, in case you'd like to chime in again.

it is now one year since WikiProject Open Access was started by User:Bluerasberry on January 10, 2012. Since then, the project has advanced modestly, but we have not interacted much. For the coming year, we certainly want to improve on that.

We also plan to overhaul the project pages to make them more conducive to collaboration, and we are pondering the idea of expanding the concept of a WikiProject Open Access to projects other than the English Wikipedia, e.g. to other languages or to Wikimedia Commons. You are warmly invited to add your voice to all that. We would also appreciate if you would share some of your OA-related activities by way of our news ticker or via the monthly Open Access report that is part of the GLAM newsletter (to which you can subscribe here), or as you see fit otherwise.

As a visual token of the anniversary, I am adding today's Open Access File of the Day. Feel free to nominate files yourself. As of today, commons:Category:Open access (publishing) contains more than 15,000 files, of which about 2/3 are video and sound files uploaded by the Open Access Media Importer.

Wikipedia Ambassadors update[edit]

Hi! You're getting this message because you are or have been a Wikipedia Ambassador. A new term is beginning for the United States and Canada Education Programs, and I wanted to give you an update on some important new information if you're interested in continuing your work this term as a Wikipedia Ambassador.

You may have heard a reference to a transition the education program is going through. This is the last term that the Wikimedia Foundation will directly run the U.S. and Canada programs; beginning in June, a proposed thematic organization is likely to take over organizing the program. You can read more about the proposal here.

Another major change in the program will take effect immediately. Beginning this term, a new MediaWiki education extension will replace all course pages and Ambassador lists. (See Wikipedia:Course pages and Help:Education Program extension for more details.) Included in the extension are online volunteer and campus volunteer user rights, which let you create and edit course pages and sign up as an ambassador for a particular course.

If you would like to continue serving as a Wikipedia Ambassador — even if you do not support a class this term — you must create an ambassador profile. If you're no longer interested in being a Wikipedia Ambassador, you don't need to do anything.

Please do these steps as soon as possible

First, you need the relevant user rights for Online and/or Campus Ambassadors. (If you are an admin, you can grant the rights yourself, for you as well as other ambassadors.) Just post your rights request here, and we'll get you set up as quickly as possible.

Once you've got the ambassador rights, please set up at a Campus and/or Online Ambassador profile. You can do so at:

Going forward, the lists of Ambassadors at Special:CampusAmbassadors and Special:OnlineAmbassadors will be the official roster of who is an active Ambassador. If you would like to be an Ambassador but not ready to serve this term, you can un-check the option in your profile to publicly list it (which will remove your profile from the list).

After that, you can sign on to support courses. The list of courses will be at Special:Courses. (By default, this lists "Current" courses, but you can change the Status filter to "Planned" to see courses for this term that haven't reached their listed start date yet.)

As this is the first term we have used the extension, we know there will be some bugs, and we know the feature set is not as rich as it could be. (A big wave of improvements is already in the pipeline. And if you know MediaWiki and could help with code review, we'd love to have your help!) Please reach out to me (Sage Ross) with any complaints, bug reports, and feature suggestions. The basic features of the extension are documented at Wikipedia:Course pages, and you can see a tutorial for setting up and using them here.

Communication and keeping up to date

In the past, the Education Program has had a pretty fragmented set of communication channels. We're trying to fix that. These are the recommended places to discuss and stay up-to-date on the education program:

  1. The education noticeboard has become the main on-wiki location for discussion of the Education Program. You can post there about broad education program issues as well as issues with individual courses.
  2. The Ambassadors Announce email list is a very low-traffic announcements list of important information all Ambassadors need to be aware of. We encourage all Ambassadors (and other interested Wikipedians) to subscribe to the list; follow the instructions on the link to add your email address.
  3. If you use IRC regularly, or need to try to reach someone immediately, the #wikipedia-en-ambassadors connect IRC channel is the place to find me and fellow Ambassadors.
Ambassador training and resources

We now have an online training for Ambassadors, which is intended to be both an orientation about the Wikipedia Ambassador role for newcomers and the manual for how to do the role. (There are parallel trainings for students and for educators as well.)

Please go through the training if you feel like you need a refresher on how a typical class is supposed to go and where the Ambassadors fit in, or if you want to review and help improve it. If there's something you'd like to see added, or other suggestions you have for it, feel free to edit the training and/or leave feedback. A primer on setting up and using course pages is included in the educators' training.

The Resources page of the training is the main place for Ambassador-related resources. If there's something you think is important as a resource that's not on there, please add it.

Finally, whether or not you work with any classes this term, I encourage you to post entries to the Trophy Case whenever you see excellent work from students or if you have great examples from past semesters. And, as always, let students (and other editors!) know when they do things well; a little WikiLove goes a long way!

Related to VIAFbot[edit]

Hi, At en.wikipedia I have manually inserted and completed hundreds of {{authority control}} more than a hundred times, almost all during 2012 prior to operation of VIAFbot (~20% of our total!) and to provision of links from VIAF people pages to our biographies --I suppose, as I didn't notice links to us from VIAF.

Recently I did six more: those six biographies of Newbery Medal winners that did not include authority control information after operation of VIAFbot ([6] --called "VIAF missing" for short but not precisely that). I have wondered what is useful to do next but only today I visited User:VIAFbot and the blog "VIAFbot Debriefing; November 28th, 2012 by Max". Perhaps you can answer some remaining questions.

  1. Is there a convenient way to enable interwiki links? I would follow those to DE.wikipedia and look around ("bad" VIAF ID, "bad" reciprocal interwiki?).
  2. Does User:VIAFbot/Stats cover a preliminary run only about one quarter of full size?
  3. All six of my so-called VIAF missing have VIAF pages (and LCCN and GND pages also, and now have complete AC templates in their EN biographies).
    1. Three (order 2,3,4 as listed) have good links from VIAF to EN so I anticipate identifying their "Case" numbers and perhaps helping in some way. Three have no links here from VIAF; none have bad links.
    2. The last two (5,6 as listed) have distinct VIAF ID linked to LCCN and GND. For what it's worth they both have WorldCat pages lacking adequate links to EN.wikipedia. Does Wikipedia:VIAF/errors cover such "errors" of omission where no bad data was added to our biography and evidently there was no accidental match?
  4. In residence at OCLC, do you know a good way to report errors in WorldCat people pages? As for the last of my six as listed. WorldCat and VIAF pages both exist; our biography now provides valid ac data. But WorldCat links to a bad VIAF page and does not link here at all.

Thanks for all your contributions to VIAF before. Your early efforts were the reason we could find consensus to run VIAFbot. I'll try and respond point by point.
  1. Is your question can we generate an interwiki link between enwp page A with dewp page B because they both have VIAF ID C? That's possible, I'd never thought of doing it. It's simple enough to write, if you think there's consensus for such a bot.
  2. User:VIAFbot/Stats does just cover about the first quarter of the run. We tweaked the algorithm at that point and I didn't update the statistics after that. Do you think we should delete the page?
  3. Well done. Dilligent thorough work.
    1. If there were VIAF->ENWP links present, then there must have been some conflict with DEWP. Otherwise those present cases where the was some logic bug that I didn't catch.
    2. 'No bad data added' is not a error case that I anticipated for reporting.
  4. If you update the Wikipedia page the have the right AC, then VIAF has a high likely hood of automatically healing that reciprocation next time the VIAF clustering algorithm runs (every six months) because it scans Wikipedia for changes to the AC.

  1. No, I am a beginner in this respect. I mean "enable" interwiki links in the sense of "Show hidden categories". Presently I visit a page by interwiki link only manually: Open page; read code to find interwiki link or learn there is none; visit de.wikipedia; paste.
  2. VIAFbot/Stats may be instructive. I would insert a hatnote such as "This page was in use 2012 October XX to November 5". (I was confused by "will now be updated manually."
  3. In effect I have learned what is important, partly from your answer number 4.
  4. Thanks, this helps answer number 3. Here I have changed the subject to WorldCat. OCLC is the manager(?) of WorldCat so think you may know >how to report WorldCat errors. (LCCN i know.)
    1. Visit Virginia Sorensen at WorldCat, section Useful links. WorldCat gives a bad link to VIAF (and none to wikipedia). Our biography now has the good link to VIAF.
    2. After reading yesterday I understand that we humans and bots have not used WorldCat data to help link EN and VIAF. (Before reading carefully I had jumped from "OCLC" to supposing that your bot used WorldCat links.)
  5. (P.S.) Links provided on WorldCat people pages would help in some cases. For example, Avi at WorldCat, section Useful links, does link adequately both to our biography and to that VIAF file which I have now linked manually to our biography. --A robot might not have closed the case with these data, however, for DE.wikipedia links Avi to a different VIAF file (Avi Wortis, which I'll fix).

1. I'm not sure I know precisely what your question is? As far as I know, by default, if an interwikilink of language X exists in the wikitext then a link to that article in language X is rendered under the "Languages" section of the persistent Left sidebar.
4. If you want to report errors about WorldCat Identities (which OCLC does manage) then, I'd use this form with 'activity' of 'Identities network'.

Max, At Wikipedia talk: Authority control#Multiple VIAFs for a single person, today I reported some progress since last year in merging "Multiple VIAFs" for people whose biographies I worked on last year: more than 10 Multiples out of almost 100 people among "hundreds" that I mentioned in the first paragraph above.
All of those 10 to 15 have been merged. I checked them only this week and not since last summer. As far as I know the progress may have been effected partly by VIAFbot itself, if its run last October collected data on LCCN and GND id that were already in place.--P64 (talk) 20:55, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    • New features and bugfixes on Wikidata are planned to be deployed on Monday (Feb 18). This should among other things include:
      • Showing useful diffs for edits of claims (they’re currently empty)
      • Automatic comments for editing of claims (there are currently none)
      • Ability to add items to claims by their ID
      • Better handling of deleted properties
      • More results in the entity selector (that’s the thing that lets you select properties, items and so on) so you can add everything and not just the first few matches that are shown
    • We’re still working on the issue that sometimes editing of certain parts of items or properties isn’t possible. If you’re running into it try to reload the page and/or change the URL to the www. version or the non-www. version respectively.
    • Deployment on all other Wikipedias is currently planned for March 6 (a note to the Village Pumps of all affected projects will follow soon)

    • Extended diff view to include references now
    • Fixed bug where incorrect statements revision was shown in diff view
    • Added first version of Linked Data interface (RDF/XML); will be accessible from Special:EntityData
    • Updated the demo system
    • More work towards using Solr for our search
    • More investigation and fixes of search issues
    • Fixed several bugs in the entity selector and improved its behavior
    • Worked on refactoring of how our widgets use the toolbar

    • Rollout of phase 1 (language links) on all remaining Wikipedias is still planned for March 6

    • Proposal was made to the Hungarian, Hebrew and Italian Wikipedias to be the first batch to use phase 2 of Wikidata (infoboxes). Scheduled timeframe for this is end of March
    • d:Wikidata:Database reports has some useful reports like the list of most used properties
    • The interwiki shortcut :d was changed to always use www in the resulting link (to prevent editing issues on other URLs).
    • The list of available properties is growing and a whole bunch of new ones are being discussed
    • Reasonator gives you a nice adapted view of an item about a person
    • Items by cat helps you find missing items in a certain Wikipedia category
    • A few more additions to d:Wikidata:Tools that you should have a look at if you’re editing statements

    • Rolled out new code on wikidata.org. The new stuff you probably care about is:
      • Improved references. They can now have multiple lines. This should make references much more useful. You can now have one reference with for example values for each of the properties "book", "author", "page" to describe one source.
      • Fixed the prev/next links in diff view (bugzilla:45821)
      • d:Special:EntitiesWithoutLabel now lets you filter by language and entity type
    • Widget to add language links on the Wikipedias directly: added setting to enable/disable it per wiki and made it available for logged-in users only
    • Widget to add language links on the Wikipedias directly: improved layout / size
    • Made it so that the “edit links” link on Wikipedia is also shown when the corresponding item only has a link to this one language and no other languages
    • Submitted improved Apache config patch to make wikidata.org always redirect to www.wikidata.org, which is awaiting code review and deployment.
    • Improved the script that is responsible for taking Wikidata changes to the Wikipedias
    • Added a few ways to better debug the script responsible for taking Wikidata changes to the Wikipedias. This should help with investigating why some changes take way to long to show up on the Wikipedias.
    • Started work on automatically adding edited items to the user’s watchlist (according to preferences)
    • Finished script for rebuilding search keys, so we can finally get case insensitive matches in a lot of places
    • Support for multi-line references in diff view
    • Selenium tests for inclusion syntax
    • Improved parser function (that will be used to access Wikidata data on the Wikipedias) to accept property ID or label

    • When you edit a statement there is a little wheel in front of the text field. This lets you choose between “custom value”, “unknown value” and “no value”. “No value” means that we know that the given property has no value, e.g. Elizabeth I of England had no spouse. “Unknown value” means that the property has a value, but it is unknown which one -- e.g. Pope Linus most certainly had a year of birth, but it is unknown to us.

    • Worked on making properties accessible from the client using their label so you can use {{#property:executive director}} instead of {{#property:p169}} for example
    • Made qualifiers ready for the next deployment (Please test. See details further down.)

    • We’re currently carefully monitoring performance after the deployment of phase 2 on the first 11 Wikipedias. There seem to be a few small issues. As soon as they are resolved we'll deploy on English Wikipedia. All other Wikipedias are planned to follow very soon after that.
    • Bye and a big thank you to Anja, Silke, Jens and John who are leaving the development team at the end of the month and will work on other cool things. You’ll be missed!
    • Ever had any doubt about the possibilities of Wikidata? Talk to Wiri!
    • We worked on reducing the time it takes for Wikidata edits to show up in the Wikipedias and made some progress. Daniel posted an analysis
    • We started running a script on the database in order to make search on Wikidata case-insensitive. This should be finished in a few days and then search should be more useful.
    • In addition to the above we have rolled out a new search box that suggests items. This should also make finding things on Wikidata a lot easier for you.
    • We’re making some progress with Internet Explorer 8 support but there are a lot of issues with it (some outside our control). It’s unclear at the moment how much we can improve it still without spending an unjustified amount of time on it. You can follow the progress at bugzilla:44228
    • Edits are now auto-confirmed for users with more than 50 edits and account age 4 days: bugzilla:46461
    • Do you need old-style interwiki links for a sister project for example? This is for you
    • The Wikimedia Foundation applied as a mentoring organisation for Google Summer of Code again. We have proposed some Wikidata projects for students to take up if the Foundation is accepted again. At least 2 other organisations that applied also propose Wikidata ideas. More details on that once we know which organisations are accepted.
    • Denny hacked together a tree of life based on data from Wikidata
    • Wikidata was added to wikipulse
    • A template to retrieve data from Wikidata if no local value is set

    • There is now a page showing the current lag for changes propagating to the Wikipedias so they can show up in watchlists and recent changes for example. This should ideally be in the range of a few minutes. Right now it is higher because of some abnormally high bot activity but decreasing. Should be down to a few minutes soon.
    • There’s now a badge you can add to Wikipedia articles to indicate there is data about it on Wikidata
    • We hit Q10000000
    • A Wikidata item in the wild ;-)

    • Got some external professional review of our code and architecture and started working on their feedback
    • Worked on reducing the dispatch lag (the time it takes for changes on Wikidata to be sent to the Wikipedias for display in watchlist, recent changes and to purge affected pages)
    • Worked on using Redis for job queue to improve the lag situation even further
    • Created new Wikibase Query extension for phase 3 functionality
    • Autocomments & Autosummaries for SetClaim module
    • Worked on the GeoCoordinate parser

    • Deployment of phase 2 on the remaining Wikipedias was delayed because of a high lag of changes being propagated to the Wikipedias. The lag has been reduced considerably now and is going down even more. The new date for deployment will not be next week because there are other large changes on Wikimedia infrastructure scheduled that we do not want to interfere with. It will hopefully happen very soon after that though.
    • Next code update on wikidata.org is planned for Wednesday. This should include qualifiers and bugfixes.
    • There will probably be a short outage/read-only for wikidata.org on Tuesday (database is being switched to MariaDB)
    • If you're a student and interested in coding on Wikidata consider applying for Google Summer of Code.
    • There is a new user right: property creators
    • There is now a page to request deletion of a property
    • We now have Bureaucrats
    • Reasonator was improved and extended (1 2)
