- Oh hang on - if you mean the Mac Maoláin article, all I did was cut out a great deal of irrelevant material. I didn't delete it. Your version of the article was far too long, didn't breack up sections into paragrahs, and was quite unreadable. Still plenty of work to do, though. - Fergananim, I will look into the Irish Wiki board. Had hoped to discuss this with you in a polite way, looking to gain some sense of why you would delete 4465 of my words (the complete text) and replace it with 269 of your words (the relevant ones????), but this blunt response would appear to limit that opportunity. Contact, collaberation and suggestions for improvement would have been very welcome. On that note I will make an effort to reconstruct this article. As to what is relevant, as a Mac Maolain with genetic and documented ties to the areas and people I was discussing, the elected Chieftain of Clan Mac Maolain and a board member of the Clans of Ireland, I will make the lofty assumption that I rank with you as having some idea of what information is relevant to my surname. I will take your suggestions on shorter and paragraph construction as being a sincere effort to help me with this article and freely admit I an not a seasoned Wiki expert. Slainte Laighin Mac Maolain
- Hello Mac Maoláin. If any of my actions or words were interpreted as been blunt or impolite, I'm sorry. That was not my intent. Please refer the matter to the Irish Wiki board if you still feel a greivence. I saw a page which had a huge information dump, which made it difficult to read and understand. I simplified the text accordingly - rightly or wrongly believing that, as much of it seemed to be taken directly from the texts cited, there would be copyright issues. I refrained from recasting my edit to a similar size not only for reasons outlined, but also becuase I do not have access to all the sources you cite. Therefore I confined my edit based on sources available to me. Frankly, when first I saw this, I was irritated that it had been left in such a mess; I had no idea anyone had any intention of updating it. It looked abandoned, and well worth the effort of improvement, so I did as much as I could within the limits Wikipedia proscribes. I'm not a Mac Maoláin (as far as I know!) but it struck me as a worthy article that could be better edited. Because so much séafoid has been written on Irish families on Wiki, I make a special effort to edit them as best I can; sparsely usually does the trick - fewer mistakes, leaves room for improvement! Ó Flaithbertaigh was a similar case in point, and I edited it to its present shape for much the same reasons - clarity, possible copywright issues, reduce information dump, et al. Incidently, the Irish Times external link I cited is, I have found after much trial and effort, the single best on the web for Irish surnames. And I think you could add the form Mallon for the Mac Maoláin's of Uíbh Echach. This is another reason why I refrained from adding very much to my edit - it would stray into the area of original research, which is a no-no on Wiki. Hope this explains my actions. - ******* Thanks for the feedback Fergananim. You make many good points. I was aware of this copywright issue and avoided using the exact descriptions listed in the reference materials I had sourced. My interest is not in launching complaints, rather in posting eventually, a quality article relating to my surname, its ancient origins, the townlands, geographic locations inhabited by these Mac Maolains and occupational history. In that regard, your action may have been a good thing, as obviously my approach was inadequate. I will take a close look at your work on O'Flaherty to get some idea of how to rebuild this effort in a more readable fashion. I am not completely clear on what you were hinting at regarding original research? Perhaps as I move forward I could contact you for input and editing. Laighin
- Hello again, Mac. Again, I apoligise if any of my edits or comments were taken the wrong way. And ask around - I wouldn't state that my work is the epitome for family history articles! Regarding original research, I've frequently come to my own conclusions on certain family origins, but cannot include original research in a wiki article. The best thing to do would be to write up an article on the family, and submit it to some Irish family history journal. The likes of the Genealogical Society of Ireland have done great work in this area, but there are others. Slan, Fergananim (talk) 19:58, 4 July 2011 (UTC)
I think I understand what you are driving at with regards to origin conclusions. Actually the pathway information was related to more factual DNA research, not my ,personal opinion. I manage two projects, one for FTDNA and one for AncestryDna, so in that regard my comments were in most cases simply aligning history in terms of recorded locations with DNA genetic match facts about families that evolved in those locales. Having said that I will look seriously at reducing that approach to focus on the surname objective. As for our (my) family history, it is documented in writing back to the 16th century, in actual birth docs to 1712 and is in the process of being archived by the Clans of Ireland. It includes many formal documents plus DNA match evidence to the surname Mullen at a genetic distance of 1100 years (when surnames were introduced) continuing unbroken with Mullen, Mullin, McMullan, McMullen, MacMullen and even a McMellon match. So no conclusions required there, DNA does not lie, it places us latest in Co. Kilkenny exactly where family docs and gravestones say we were. We came there in 1690 from Ardmagh Brega Morgallion Co. Meath, where the rest of the matches confirm our presence back to the time of the Gaileanga Mora and Brega. 24.67.14.140 (talk) 01:07, 5 July 2011 (UTC)mcmull1
