Hello

Since you thanked me for my improvements, I've resurected Yahweh into an article again. Any advice? I plan on adding more info and a live performances section hopefully when I get more free time. BV talk 05:27, 29 November 2010 (UTC)

It looks like a pretty good start after a quick skim. I can't really think of anything to advise beyond adding more detail into every section if it can be found. I've added {{find}} to the talk page; that might help you in finding mentions in articles, or even books that you don't have access to. It definitely helped me with "City of Blinding Lights"; more than I can describe in fact! It's pretty late here at the moment, and I might not get a chance to look at it in more detail until Tuesday night. If anything leaps into my mind in the interim, I'll definitely let you know. Hahah, after that performance I'm not surprised! I'm so jealous that you got "All I Want Is You"! Can't imagine how much of a thrill that must have been. Melicans (talk, contributions) 15:39, 21 December 2010 (UTC)

Beautful Day

Actually I am thankful you amended teh presentation. I just didn't look at the talk page, before opening a section for Lee DeWyze, that's all. In any case I am adding further known versions. I had added Norwegian Kurt Nilsen, and now I just added added Sanctus Real. There is also a version by Axel Rudi Pell... It just shows you how popular the song is. But the legacy section didn't mention any of those. Many happy returns to you too werldwayd (talk) 05:41, 25 December 2010 (UTC)

Do you have access to old newspaper/magazine articles?

I'm trying to access some old reviews of U2 albums from the early 80s, but the information is rather difficult to come by without archival access (e.g. Washington Post, LA Times, etc). And @U2's archives from these years is limited. Do you have any access to archives that might have these sorts of articles? Y2Kcrazyjoker4 (talkcontributions) 20:13, 30 December 2010 (UTC)

I can check through my University's library once I'm back on campus in a few days. They may have something through the online database access. Are there any albums/reviews you're looking for specifically? Melicans (talk, contributions) 05:53, 1 January 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, I sent the same request to Dream out loud and he emailed me a few articles. Let me filter out the ones I don't yet have and I'll get back to you. Y2Kcrazyjoker4 (talkcontributions) 18:32, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
Here's a few:
  • "SPIRIT AT CORE OF 'JOSHUA TREE'" - Sacramento Bee: April 12, 1987
  • "RIGHTEOUS THUNDER IS U2'S LATEST" - Miami Herald: March 22, 1987 Y2Kcrazyjoker4 (talkcontributions) 21:07, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

WP:NSONGS

Melicans

Someone redirected Slug to the Passengers album citing WP:NSONGS. I am sure that it used to read notability is established by charts, awards, etc, OR existence of reliable sources. Yet, now I read it and it says AND reliable sources. That’s a big difference.

Any ideas? Cheers --Merbabu (talk) 21:49, 17 January 2011 (UTC)

The funny thing about NSONG is that it doesn't even say that songs with awards, covers, etc. are notable; just that they are probably notable. My reading on it is based on this part: "Notability aside, a separate article on a song is only appropriate when there is enough verifiable material to warrant a reasonably detailed article; articles unlikely ever to grow beyond stubs should be merged to articles about an artist or album." This has always been my argument for having "Slug" as a separate article, and a merge discussion at Talk: Slug (song) midway last year affirmed that. I certainly feel that there is enough verifiable material that has led to a "reasonably" detailed article. Melicans (talk, contributions) 23:00, 17 January 2011 (UTC)
As currently written, the existence of reliable references is not a criteria for notability. It says songs must meet the criteria (awards, charting, etc) AND have reliable sources. That’s different to eith meeting the criteria of awards, charting, etc OR having reliable sources. Obviously, the Slug article depends on the latter interpretation – it would not look good at AFD under the former interpretation.
I’d love to know where that version of WP:SONG was and when (and if) it was changed. If it was not done with proper consultation/consensus then it should be restored.
cheers --Merbabu (talk) 05:15, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
If it comes down to a fight over interpreting the NSONGS then I'd argue WP:IAR - ie, ignore rules that don't help the encyclopedia. There is no way deleting this article (and others in the same boat) is going to improve wikipedia. --Merbabu (talk) 06:12, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

Primeval

An editor, Fehér Zoltán (talk · contribs), is wreaking havoc on Primeval and related pages, making a large number of ill-advised edits (eg, creating red links, anticipating future events). Both myself and AussieLegend have reverted him several times recently (and if we agree on anything, that is notable). But he continues. He's just now merged another page into it, making a hugely unwieldy article, and then continued to put his pet edits, already reverted several times, into it. He never comments his edits or engages on the Discussion page. I've already reverted him twice today, so I'll just get myself in a 3R if I try to fix it myself. Please have a look and advise. I'm now watching this talk page. Barsoomian (talk) 17:21, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, you two are definitely in the right. It seems to have lulled for now but I'll keep an eye on it and if it continues then I will get involved in it. I'll leave them a 3RR warning on their talk page; if it keep going, a request for full protection may be necessary. There's already a merge proposal open on Talk:Primeval, right? So the user really has no reason to edit war without discussing it. Melicans (talk, contributions) 19:54, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
AussieLegend had just discovered this other related article that had been blanked a while ago and proposed to merge it and started a discussion. Zoltán preempted that. I looked at his history; he seems to have made a total of one comment on a discussion page in the last couple of years, and very rarely puts anything in his edit summaries. He's not a deliberate vandal, just ignores everyone else. Barsoomian (talk) 02:53, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

PR question

It isn't necessarily easy to track down more information for an image uploaded by someone else. By parsing the URL given already on the image description page, I find this more general information page. Going on a hunch and clicking on the Iran-Contra link takes me to to a thumbnail page that identifies the images as "C39273-16, President Reagan receives the Tower Commission Report in the Cabinet Room with John Tower and Edmund Muskie. 2/26/87." (This gives us the missing publication date and an ID number.) Backing up a couple of levels at the source site, I find here that the Reagan Library is maintained by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). Going on a hunch, I find a "NARA-image" template at WP:ICT that could be added to the image license page (in addition to a public domain license tag of some sort). As you can see, ferreting out the missing information is like other research, time-consuming and leading who knows where. I think there might be a better digital version of the image in the NARA archives (as opposed to the University of Texas archives), but I don't have time just now to pursue that angle. Hope this helps. Finetooth (talk) 21:33, 10 February 2011 (UTC)

Welcome to the Wikipedia Ambassador Program!

Hi Melicans!

Congratulations! Your application to join the Wikipedia Ambassador Program as an Online Ambassador has been accepted.

First off, I apologize for the following info-dump. If you're wondering how to get started or are wondering what's going on, please contact me.

If you haven't already done so, take a look at the Online Ambassador guidelines: Wikipedia:Online_Ambassadors/Guidelines

The "mentorship process" section lays out approximately what will be expected of you as a mentor. If you'd like, you can also volunteer to be the coordinating online ambassador for a class or two.

Please add yourself to the top of the list of available mentors, and note the number of students you think you'd like to mentor next term (it doesn't have to be a final answer, this is just to help with matching students and mentors once the students start getting active) and if you'd like to take on the coordination role for any classes note that as well: Wikipedia:Online_Ambassadors/Mentors (Don't add yourself to the lower "Additional online ambassadors section; that's for ambassadors-in-training and ambassadors who are already mentoring all the the students they want to take on.)

To coordinate between Online Ambassadors and Campus Ambassadors, we've been using a Google Group as a mailing list. It's not required, but almost all the ambassadors are on it. Would you like me to subscribe you? Email me with your email address if so.

You can catch with what's been going on so far with the first major message this term, with details about what the group should and shouldn't be used for: Wikipedia_talk:Ambassadors#Information_for_Ambassadors_about_January_-_May_2011_term

You can also check out the first two ambassador newsletters, which have more detail about what's going on right now. You'll get future editions delivered to your talk page.

If you use IRC, please consider adding #wikipedia-en-ambassadors and #wikipedia-en-classroom to your channel lineup.

Finally, please help us find more mentors! Because the number of students, and their involvement with mentors, is increasing so much for this term, we're going to need a lot of solid Online Ambassadors. Please take a few minutes to think of several other editors you know who would make good mentors, and invite them to apply the the Wikipedia Ambassador Program. The key things we look for are: regular activity (so that we can be confident they'll keep up with their mentoring role for the whole term), friendliness, and the ability to give detailed, substantive feedback on articles (both short new articles, and longer, more mature ones). You can point them to Wikipedia:Online Ambassadors for information on how to apply and what to expect.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Thank You!

The Featured Sound Main Page Proposal Voter Barnstar
I was truly humbled by the overwhelming community support for the recent proposal to place featured sounds on the main page. The proposal closed on Tuesday with 57 people in support and only 2 in opposition.

It should take a few weeks for everything to get coded and tested, and once that is done the community will be presented with a mock up to assess on aesthetic appeal.

Finally, I invite all of you to participate in the featured sounds process itself. Whether you're a performer, an uploader, or just come across a sound file you find top quality, and that meets the featured sound criteria, you can nominate it at Wikipedia:Featured sound candidates. Featured sounds is also looking for people to help assess candidates (also at Wikipedia:Featured sound candidates.)

Thanks again for such a strong showing of support, and I hope to see you at featured sounds in the future.

Primeval again

Another headbutting match is proceeding at [2]. You do need to be familiar with the show and the webisodes to make sense of this; which I believe you are. The key fact, as I see it, is that the webisodes are clearly placed between episodes 23 and 24 chronologically, unlike some other shows where webisodes run in parallel with the main storyline. So I extended the numbering system to reflect that fact. The numbering I initially applied can be seen [3]. Aussielegend found this offensive and replaced it with his own system. The rest, you can read at the link, if you have the stomach. Barsoomian (talk) 11:13, 25 February 2011 (UTC)

Ambassador Program: assessment drive

Even though it's been quiet on-wiki, the Wikipedia Ambassador Program has been busy over the last few months getting ready for the next term. We're heading toward over 80 classes in the US, across all disciplines. You'll see courses start popping up here, and this time we want to match one or more Online Ambassadors to each class based on interest or expertise in the subject matter. If you see a class that you're interested, please contact the professor and/or me; the sooner the Ambassadors and professors get in communication, the better things go. Look for more in the coming weeks about next term.

In the meantime, with a little help I've identified all the articles students did significant work on in the last term. Many of the articles have never been assessed, or have ratings that are out of date from before the students improved them. Please help assess them! Pick a class, or just a few articles, and give them a rating (and add a relevant WikiProject banner if there isn't one), and then update the list of articles.

Once we have updated assessments for all these articles, we can get a better idea of how quality varied from course to course, and which approaches to running Wikipedia assignments and managing courses are most effective.

I don't see the point in retaining statements speculating about a deal after it has actually been made, for instance.
