Orphaned non-free media (File:Ovits family (dwarfs) 300x178.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Ovits family (dwarfs) 300x178.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited List of books about Oakland, California, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Oakland, Pennsylvania and Charles Finley (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

I believe this happened because the moves were completed two months after my original comments (I've usually moved on from a conversation by that point!). Beatles categories[edit]

Hi. I have reverted your edits to Category:The Beatles and the other Beatles categories because you seem to misunderstand the difference between "topic categories" and "set categories". Topic categories are for topics related to the category namesake. For example, Category:Ringo Starr is for anything related to Ringo Starr. Set categories contain a particular set. For example, Category:The Beatles members contains the members of The Beatles (plus lists of the set). It's not consistent across Wikipedia but set categories are only supposed to contain subcategories that are also set categories. For instance, in real life, I am a human, and humans are a subcategory of apes, so therefore, I am also an ape. Although Ringo Starr is a member of The Beatles, the other articles in Category:Ringo Starr are not, so the category is not a subcategory of Category:The Beatles members. How many categories?[edit]

Thanks for reviewing Len Shustek adding appropriate categories. It seems that whenever I provide what seems like a reasonable set of categories, eventually another editor deletes many of them. I have read the help pages on categories, and I still can't understand when I have enough or too many categories. I would appreciate any suggestions you may have.

I liked studing at your example. I have since added "Polytechnic Institute of New York University alumni".

I will watch your talk page, if you decide to respond.

Wikfr (talk) 21:28, 31 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I hadnt thought of that one, as that school didnt catch my eye as that notable (apparently it is, so i dont know everything). have you tried using WP:hotcat? it makes it easier to find categories. my best rule is to take a general category, like Category:Scientists, and try to find the most specific sub category or categories possible. for instance, einstein was a scientist. i would look for : german physicists, german mathematicians, American physicists, jewish physicists, 20th century physicists, scientists from his home town, or maybe just people from his home town (if its very small), nobel physics laureates, german americans or german immigrants to the US, etc. some of these will exist, some wont. i may decide to create a new category, as i did extensively for the SFBA, as individual cities dont have enough, say, lawyers to have a category, but the bay area surely has enough notable lawyers to give them a category, and the bay area is a noted region described as such by many. i wouldnt create "lawyers from the counties on the california/oregon border", as thats not a notable region, though it would take at least that many counties to have enough lawyers for a category. I plan to create "prisons in the SFBA" shortly, and i think ALL the faculty of the regional universities could be categorized by their specialities: chemists from the SFBA, etc, including making such categories for the state (chemists from cali, etc), if not already created. as we both know, california may as well be a nation, for the diversity and complexity of the society, and the SFBA could easily rival many nations for diversity as well. The key to not having categories deleted i believe is to not reach to nebulous categories, such as "physics" for physicists, or "business" for a CEO, or "history" for an article on a notable murder. if its clearly, objectively, unambiguously fitting into a particular category, no one can reasonably delete it. and remember, categories dont make distinction about how notable they are, so a person well known for murdering someone, who happens to be a somewhat recognized programmer, gets that category just like Alan turing, and a disgraced physicist gets the same category as einstein. for those distinctions, we need lists of such people with descriptions of how they are notable in that area. certain subjects, especially people, have more categories than others. a bay area stream will probably have only one category, "rivers in foo county", or "rivers in cityville", unless it crosses through 2 cities or counties who both have categories for streams/rivers. Oh, and for Len, i tried looking up "endowments", seeing if there is a category for people who create endowments, but we dont have one yet, the closest we get is Category:Financial endowments, which is too vague, as he is not a financial endowment. the first person to create a financial endowment for a university could have this category,as a significant person in the history of the concept, but not len. i hope this helps a little.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 01:24, 1 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A good fish slapping[edit]

You requested a good fish slapping at Categories for discussion. This is a fish walloping that involves the use of dried stockfish and some Norwegian two-by-fours. (Trouting is blaha blaha — a squishy business.) I hesitate to post it on your page, though — not sure such a drubbing is deserved here — please just post it on yourself if you think it is! Bishonen | talk 21:43, 31 October 2012 (UTC).[reply]

why not, the history of dried fish is of vital importance to world history, and is likely underreported on Wikipedia, so if this spurs research:
Flatpack self-assembly fish-drying rack £375, all major credit cards accepted
Flatpack self-assembly fish-drying rack £375, all major credit cards accepted
Krunch! Wham! Biff! Urkkk!

You're way beyond getting whacked with a wet trout. A friend has walloped you with a rack of dried stockfish. Better take this seriously. She wants you to know she'll send her boys next time.

ah, thats better.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 01:09, 1 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article Ridgway Banks has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No independent, reliable references about Mr. Banks. The refs are about his inventions and not Banks.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Re: Fleishhacker Pool[edit]

Fleishhacker Pool was an icon of San Francisco for many decades, and was once the largest outdoor swimming pool in the world. I don't think it qualifies for "low" importance status. This is why the importance listings for the sfba work group should be deprecated, and why most active WikiProjects have removed it altogether. Viriditas (talk) 06:55, 3 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Berkeley in the Sixties[edit]

A film that is nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature is not of "low" importance, and the Film project deprecated the importance parameter a long, long time ago. I thought I had recently explained this to you, so what is this all about? The project (and the template) no longer uses importance as a parameter. No offence, but your behavior is a bit strange here. Have a look for yourself. Importance as a parameter was deprecated in 2008.[1] See Wikipedia:WikiProject_Films/Core#Background for more information. Viriditas (talk) 07:29, 5 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Pet Food Express, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Animal rescue (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

MFD noms[edit]

Please check over your mfd noms to see if these were userfied or merely copy-paste copies, and note that in each nom.

I think it would be helpful (and smart, for potential future reference) if, prior to deletion, the ones with edit histories were moved back to article-space. - jc37 04:34, 19 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am checking the edit history of each page before i determine what type of proposal to make. if its a previously deleted article, which was userfied by an admin acting in good faith, i am MFD'ing it, to elicit discussion. If its an old version of a current article, whether or not it was previously deleted and recreated, i have CSD'd it as an old fork (after confirming that no other editors have somehow found this userpage and edited it themselves, not just removed categories or tagged it for whatnot). if it was a copied article made just prior to a deletion, with the purpose of "saving" it for the editors later perusal, i am CSD'ing it. I have considered restoring each one to article space, but i havent found any which appear to be candidates for an article. the list of asteroid discoverers is a good idea, and if someone does want to create it from this old version, they can go at it. ive created lists like that myself. I think im giving each a fair shot. and, of course, if COM wants to come back from self imposed exile and say "i want to work on these" im inclined to support. we need good editors, he appears to have editing skills, he can use them here if he plays fair.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 04:42, 19 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
My apologies, I wasn't clear on what I was asking.
Sometimes a userspace version of an article is "the original", and so an history merge may appropriate. Sometimes, someone moved an article from mainspace to userspace to work on it. If there are others in the page history than just that editor, then it should be moved back to article space prior to deletion. (Several reasons - one is so that the deletion log at that location is accurate.)
I'm talking about technical (possibly admin-related) actions, not commenting whether they should be kept or not, merely that page histories and logs should not be unintentionally "hidden" in userspace. - jc37 05:58, 19 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think that all of these pages were moved from a deleted article to COM's userspace, with only random edits like commenting out categories, or disambiguation fixes. none appear to be original to COM. However, i get that you are talking about a different issue than i originally thought. I dont always "get" the processes for preserving edit history, but if these pages need to be returned to article space for afd, im just glad to know why that may be happening. I get that you are not commenting on the content, only the procedure. Thats what makes this site so cool. each of us has our strengths and weaknesses, but together the work seems to get done properly.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 07:39, 19 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I saw you tagged a bunch of articles in this user's userspace, at least the one I looked at was a G4 because the article had been deleted. In my (albeit rusty) understanding it's fine for people to have deleted stuff in their userspace so they can work on it to maybe get it up to article standards or for whatever reason. Unless it's something like a copyvio or an attack page. Is that your understanding too? Was there something in particular about all those pages that needs to get deleted? (Or is there a discussion or something I'm not aware of?) If not I'm inclined to let them leave this stuff kicking around their userspace. (Apologies if the answer is glaringly obvious, I only looked at a couple). What do you think? Peace, delldot ∇. 05:08, 19 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey again, I replied to your message on my talk page. Peace, delldot ∇. 05:24, 19 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hope this will resolve your AfD concerns for Mosaic Inc.[edit]

With condemnation of your deletionist intentions, I have left a number of references from "fairly reliable third parties" on Mosaic Inc., which will hopefully quench your thirst for an AfD. Seriously, the article was very well referenced (TechCrunch, B Corporation, GigaOm, Dow Jones & Company) before I added Forbes, Bloomberg and WSJ. A tag has been placed on File:LHS sunstones.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Speedy deletions[edit]

You have placed notices on my talk page saying various files are candidates for speedy deletion, and i cant find any evidence of such a tag at those files. i did not upload them, some are featured images. Please explain your edits to me, they make no sense.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 20:24, 19 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

They were CSD under F2, because the file was already described at Wikimedia Commons Sfan00 IMG (talk) 22:01, 19 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
