Some of the AFDs you commented in before were closed and then restarted again

You commented in many of the AFDs started by a now banned sock against Richard Norton, which were closed, then instead of being reopened, were restarted, thus any comment you made previously lost. You might want to check on that. [1] Gattosby. Also some were nominated by the now blocked for life [2] Ocean Mystic Researcher. I noticed you commented in a lot of them the day they were opened. Sarah Kay (poet)

Hi MichaelQSchmidt, I well remember some brilliant work you did sometime back on articles I was trying to rescue from deletion. I've been doing some work on Sarah Kay (poet), currently listed as AfD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Sarah_Kay_(poet)). The case seems to suffer from the totally irrelevant fact that there are several significant people called Sarah Kay, and also her project (Voice Project) is one of many bearing that name. The other factor, it seems to me, is that she is a spoken word poet, so "publication" is live performances; there are many powerful performaces on YouTube but very little in print. The article is plagued by the woman's common name and the common name of her spoken word project. I note that the author is being far more helpful and open to suggestions than many new editors whose works are sent to AFD, and his efforts to address concerns seem to be bearing fruit. Hello, I am working on a project for London film premieres for a summer sponser and see Mark had a page before though it was deleted for lack of notability. However, I would like to add a new page for Mark Boardman and have already citiated below many missing articles regarding his TV, radio and other work which make me positive he should have a permanent page here. He would be a big asset to Wikipedia and a great resource. There are a number of people rallying for him to get one and his recent press in the papers and magazines should attribute this.

Having researched, I have used sources and the below is the draft I would like to submit.

Comment - I have tidied this up a bit and put it in a user page for him, and will give him some advice (including not to spam the same request across multiple talk pages). You are welcome to give him more advice, but I don't think this has much chance - it was deleted at AfD, recreated, G4-ed and salted, and there is nothing new here - main claimed celbrity seems to be as a celebrity-chaser. But Mr Boardman has a determined SPA fan-club - Celebritypresenter (talk · contribs), TVfanaticlady (talk · contribs) Celebrityreview (talk · contribs) and now Tvstarlondon (talk · contribs), and it may end up at DRV. Ahh... a test case. Well, go ahead... as the article is Wikipedia's... but thank you for asking. You might pull more from here to expand the test should you deem it beneficial.

And I do see that there is a project properly listed under television that is somehow incorrectly duplicated under films. I would definitely like to learn more about CSS... but do you think such changes will cause angst elsewhere in the project? Schmidt, ^{MICHAEL Q.} 02:47, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

What I have in mind is what's called a styling-hook. It's a way for a CSS 'selector' to select particular elements of a page to apply some styling rules to. The CSS you've likely seen pretty much exclusively is inline CSS; in a style-attribute, and note that inline CSS does not involve selectors, as the rules are meant to apply to whatever you've stuck a stlye-attribute into. This is really a very inappropriate use of CSS, the whole point of which is to encapsulate styling details into a stylesheet where a single copy of whatever styling is kept so that it applies to a great many pages. You should read some of out pages on CSS, to help with what I'm saying.

It has no apparent effect at the moment because there are no rules using the hook the wrapper those templates implement. But we can write some rules, and that's what I'm after input on. What sort of styling changes do you think might be appropriate to develop and arrange to automagically apply to all bulleted lists wrapped this way? An example would be a different bullet than normal (tiny-film-reel-icon?), or no bullet. There's no 'header' so there's no header to paint blue, for example. To run these tests, I'm going to be putting some rules in my 'user stylesheet' and for you to see things as I do, you'll have to copy my user stylesheet to yours.

As to wikt:angst; dunno. This is a good faith effort to explore options. I believe we're allowed that freedom. For this test, the effects will only be visible to those who copy the rules to their own user stylesheets, and anyone is free to run test of their own. A simple rule would make the entire background LightSteelBlue with neon green borders; not my sort of look, though.

What skin you have selected in preferences? You're user stylesheet varies per the skin. These skins are all about CSS; changing skins means changing stylesheets.

I just added that page to our test suite. If you copy my User:Jack_Merridew/monobook.css to yours, or vector.css; whatevers, you'll see my first test. You have to be sure and do the proper full refresh when updating your user style sheet. Read the note at the top when editing and do what it says. Then go edit one of these articles. I'm thinking you don't edit your own article, but you don't actually have to change anything, just edit, preview and save. If you done nothing, no edit will be made but the page will have been purged; or use purge, if you know how that sort of thing works. Cheers, Jack Merridew 03:57, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

You're seeing it then. No, you and I are the only ones seeing this, unless someone chooses to copy these rules themselves. User style sheets are user-specific. Mostly this is for things like accessibility (font-size:200%;), but people do user stylesheets for all sorts of things, and not just wiki. Browsers allow this sort of thing, so people can write rules for anything they like; read Google News in hot pink. Clearing the cache is important when doing this sort of thing. There are multiple levels, too; the server cache, your local... If you're not seeing something you think you should, something usually needs another poke.

Those are just test rules; looks like shit to me. The idea here is to figure out what is reasonable and useful. I don't like the monobook square teal bullets, but I like most of monobook, so I stick with it. I hate vector; hobbled by usability. I suggested a film reel icon; an obvious idea, but just one I'm throwing out, not sayin' the whole wiki needs it. There are other things to consider. On that Tait page, I see the titles are italicized with the ''-notation. That generates an i-element (<i>title</i>) (and note that it would be better if MediaWiki was generating em-elements, for emphasis. a digression; ignore). Selectors can target elements, so we could do something there. I'll get back to you in ten minutes.

Good call re your editing 'you'. I didn't mean to seem to be nudging you in that direction. At this point, we don't have to edit these pages further to do a lot of test with the css pages. This is a key concept of css; you change the styling of pages without having to edit them. At all. (well, aside from the purging, which will occur naturally over time.) I will look at the whole article again, and do some reasonable editing. Since I'm here, after all.

Hey Michael I wanted to thank you for improving Douglas Tait's Wiki page. I am new to Wikipedia and I appreciate you rescuing it. Request for Assistance/Mentoring to Republish Article

Hi Michael,

In late December 2009, you helped me during a AfD discussion where an article was moved by an Admin to my workspace additional work: "It just needs a little bit more sourcing before putting it back in article space. I'm sure that when the film is finally released, that'll be easy. Michael can probably help out, he's got a good feel for these things."

Since that learning experience, the movie was released in the spring (both on Amazon.com and IndieFlix), had some screenings at festivals and a number of industry reviews.

I'd be honored and appreciative if you can provide additional guidance for editing, additions and the path to publishing back into the article space.

Nick Russell Fowler

Hello again, Michael. Wondered if you'd be interested to add to the AfD debate on Nick Russell Fowler, which has been going since May, and has been relisted twice. The discussion seems to get bogged down in labelling contributors as SPAs – even accusations of socking. I keep trying to persuade people to discuss whether the said Nick Russell Fowler is notable by Wikipedia's criteria or not.

The whole thing is complicated by the fact that you have to search on "Nick Fowler" to find stuff (there's a rename proposal on the article talk page), and the fact that too many of the contributors to the discussion are simply expressing their own opinions. Spellfury Help

Hi MichaelQSchmidt, I'm new to Wikipedia and I'm getting extremely frustrated, I'm finding that the webseries is underrepresented on Wikipedia, I understand that it's a new medium but the wiki editors are unfairly comparing Hollywood to an online webseries. Also there's a kneejerk reaction to IMDB, (delete,delete,delete) without reading the rest of the wiki and seeing that Spellfury has been reviewed by Wired.com, Ain't it Cool News and Tubefilter Spellfury the webseries (as of June 20th 2010) is the top rated show on the webseries directory Visioweb.tv. Youtube has given Spellfury it's own special showpage at[[13]], these can't be created by the public, "the guild" has also been given this honor, but notable webseries like "legend of neil" and "riese the series" don't have them. It allows The guild and Spellfury to come up in the listings of traditional television shows, Youtube has deemed Spellfury notable because of the strong viewership of the series and fanbase.

I'm finding the wiki editors are biased and make statements they don't have to back up, for instance, here's the last exchange: User Gtstricky: The wired.com article works. tubefilter and ain't it cool news will review anything if you email them and ask them. [[User:Gtstricky|

How does he know that "tubefilter" and "ain't it cool news" will review anything? He doesn't back that up with any facts. From my experience with those 2 websites, the reviewer will only review something he or she deems "notable". A webseries would give there eyeteeth for a review on either of those sites.

Requst assistance with image discussion on free-use

Hi Michael,

I respectfully request your assistance with the discussion of fair-use for a movie poster:

I beleive this is a free-use image. The image is freely downloaded from the official website: http://www.thegymnastfilm.com. It is specificaly in the "Downloads" section at http://www.thegymnastfilm.com/downloads/posters/THE_GYMNAST_webposter2.jpg. The website is making it freely available. There are no posted restrictions of its use. The downloadable file is over 2MB. I reduced the size to 197KB to make it a low resolution image, and thus not suitable for the illegal production of counterfeit goods. Making a replacement that is not a derivative work would fail to convey the impression intended by the photographer, the subjects and the film production company, would tarnish or misrepresent this person's image, or would fail its purpose of identification or commentary. Any other image found would be sourced back to the copyright holder. This is the offical poster the owners offer for download.

Any help or advice is most appreciated.

If I might butt in-- The only problem in this case appears to be that there is no article for the film yet. So, just start an article on the film The Gymnast (with adequate sourcing), add the poster into the infobox, remove the warning from the image description, and you should be fine. Happy editing! I also started the article for the The Gymnast here and hope it can go to incubation soon: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Action_grrl/workshop/The_Gymnast However, another editor removed the image from the article. No problem. Image use is pretty tricky around here. I don't think you'll be able to use a film poster image in the Dreya Weber article unless you have a section on the film, and can claim that the poster illustrates what is being discussed there. The article on the film looks like it's shaping up well. I don't know anything about the incubator, but I do work on my own articles in my work space. When I do, though, I leave the images out until I put the article on the mainpage, since "Fair use" images aren't allowed in user pages-- which, I guess, is the reason the other editor removed the image. If the image gets deleted, just re-upload it when you're going to put the film article on the mainpage, otherwise just remove the message when the article is ready, and you'll be fine. The Seven Minutes (film)

I'm leaving an identical message for all the parties involved in the edit war (Dekkapai, MichaelQSchmidt, Hullaballoo Wolfowitz) on this article advising them to take their disagreements on the notability of the nudity in the film to the talk page. All parties involved appear to have valid points so I'm not singling anyone out for possible WP:3RR violations. In the interim, I'm locking the page as is for 72 hours - hopefully by the time the block expires we might have some form of consensus. Remember, the question (as I understand it) is whether the nudity in this film was notable in and of itself. If it is not, then might the information about it be useful elsewhere - say in Nudity in film as expanded details about the 70s. Tabercil (talk) 12:23, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

Alan Mruvka

Another editor is disputing some of the facts on the Alan Mruvka article. Since you wrote the vast majority of the existing article, can you please stop by talk page and review the comments? Thanks. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 18:17, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

It appears User:Mruvka is using POV to puff Alan's career, make him seem younger than cited sources indicate, add a weight to accomplishments and add statistics not supported by sources, and seperate Alan from sourced controversies such as the Marilyn Vance or Howard Stern lawsuits by his removing all cited infromation of that earlier partnership or financial relationsips. While we need be careful when dealing with BLPs, the information he removed was presented in a very neutral maner and was well-cited. His unwriting history does not make it go away. Your edits have been entirely consistent with the provided citations, and I congratulate you for maintaining the article's integrity. Your warning on the editor's talk page seemed to not have an effect. I will also leave a note there and suggest he bring his concerns to the article talk page. Thank you. You responded to my comments about several Alan Mruvka claims, and related that you wrote the article. I can tell you flat out that Alan Mruvka had nothing to do, at all, with producing programming at E! He had no background in production, did no production, had no operational responsibilities in programming, no credits. His claim of producing 20,000 hours of programming at Movietime/E! is extremely ridiculous and you will never find any source to such a claim. Think about it: Alan Mruvka left the network 22 months after it was launched, or about 15,000 hours after it was launched, and the network had lots of late night informercial programming and a tremendous amount of repeats. I estimate that after two years about thirty of us produced maybe a thousand hours total of programming, much of it talk. Furthermore, Mruvka did not raise $200 million for the network and you will find no source for this. He resigned (was removed) from the Board of Directors of Movietime in June, 1989, at which time the company was capitalized at about $20 million. He also did not launch the network, but that claim looks like it has been dropped. I would appreciate it if you would remove the un-sourced material from the Alan Mruvka bio, as it detracts from the hard work and creativity of a large number of people who did produce the programming at Movietime. You may also have noticed that while I may have authored the article, I have not edited it in months. It does not belong to me and I have no control over other editors who have edited it since it went to mainspace. All I can advise is that if something is now in the article that is not supported by citations, that it be removed, or corrected to reflect the citations. Citing interviews off DVDs

Hi Michael. I've noticed you're pretty good at citation templates. I have a question: I've recently transcribed a series of interviews from directors included as extras on DVDs of their films. In citing the interview is it better to use the {{Template:Cite interview}} or {{Template:Cite video}}? Dekkappai (talk) 22:19, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

Hmmm... Cite Video has a Time field. I'd try that to drop in the details. E.g., Time = Interview with So&so, and leave the title field to being the specific DVD. The problem is neither CV or CI is really intended to do what you're asking... and checking how it's handled elsewhere (e.g., Superman (film)) just leaves me cold... Yeah, the problem is neither one really fits... I'm pretty careful about including timings before each interview question. What I'll probably do is use the template for the first cite-- Say,

• Satō, Hisayasu; interviewed by Nakashima Yasushi. Survey Map of a Paradise Lost (DVD) (in Japanese [English subtitles]). ArtsMagic. Event occurs at 06:49. There was a story on the news that a member of staff at NTT had been exposed as an eavesdropper. And... I thought that it wasn't really suited to be a regular entertainment film so I decided to make it into a pink film by using the incident at NTT and I expanded the story into a complete fiction.{{cite AV media}}: CS1 maint: unrecognized language (link)"

for the first cite, then, for later cites:

• Satō; Event occurs at 07:32. "I'd always been interested in the subject of eavesdropping. I think there's a kind of thrill in secretly listening in to someone else's conversation using electronic waves. And if you take it a stage further it's like you're actually invading someone's mind, almost like telepathy."

OK. I've added much about his TV and film work. The thing though is that he is primarily known as a theatre actor so it needs a lot more coverage of his theatrical work merged in with the tv and film discussion. I'd imagine googling the plays would bring up potential sources. It would be best to write about his theatrical career and performances as well as acclaim in the theatre section I think. A non-admin closure for an AFD with no controversy should not be an issue as the nominator has withdrawn the nomination and there is no dissenting !votes. You note now that I have THREE decent in-depth articles about the man, as well as sourcing all of his wins and several of his nominations? No offense to the closer, but he erred too far on the side of caution. Inre Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2010 July 19#Stephano Barberis

I opined a "keep" at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Stephano Barberis with the comment that that the article "needs cleanup for style and tone, and the addition of proper (and available) sourcing" as a surmountable issue... but had never stepped up and put actions to my words. So, since the DRV, I've been working the last couple days on a rewrite that would address concerns brought up at the AFD... in order to show that what I believed was possible, could in fact be done. Please compare THIS to my work at User:MichaelQSchmidt/workspace/Stephano Barberis and offer an opinion. And yes... I think the "Select videography" section will need massive trimming. Max Grodénchik

Hello Michael. In February you added a citation to a book from the "Webster's Quotations" series published by Icon Group International to this article. Unfortunately, Icon Group International is not a reliable source - their books are computer-generated, with most of the text copied from Wikipedia (most entries have [WP] by them to indicate this). I'm removing a lot of similar references; many other editors have also been deceived by these sources. Another publisher that reuses Wikipedia articles is Alphascript Publishing. Your point about editor's perception when seeing a badly written page is well made. The recent Stephano Barberis AFD and DRV is an example. The orginal article was put together poorly and was full of hyperbole... plenty of sources were availble but the article did not receive proper attention during its AFD. So, during the course of the DRV, I made a version prettier in a workspace and my version is what was restored with blessings from all to mainspace. Gives on a good feeling. Yup... hoax article, as none of the films seem to exist. And if any were "cult" or "successful" as asserted, there would be something somewhere. As it at least makes assertions, it might best go to AFD, though it might qualify for a BLP speedy as unsourcable. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Race 2(2011 film)

It's a curious coincidence that I encountered this on one of my fairly rare visits to the AfD list, when I did the incubation of the earlier version. I have changed my mind from my first close: the new one is significantly better referenced than the earlier version, so I have put it in the incubator and done a history merge so that everybody's credits are maintained. The incubator is a good idea, but parallel versions of incubated articles are a pain. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 21:40, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

Would just like to state that you have brought up some good points in the AfD so much so that I withdrew my call for redirection. I had noticed the strike-through of your redirection !vote. I feel that after all my arguments toward "what" could be done, I should spend some time and actually DO it (chuckle). If the film is never made, we now have an article on a project's historical progess supported by a great number of sources. If the film is made, a few tweaks and a renaming bring it back to status as an article "about" a film. You did some very nice work... but just used a style format that was worrisome for some.
