Wikimedia Stories Project[edit]

Aloha!

My name is Victor and I work with the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization that supports Wikipedia. We're chronicling the inspiring stories of the Wikipedia community around the world, including those from readers, editors, and donors. Stories are absolutely essential for any non-profit to persuade new people to support the cause, and we know the vast network of people who use Wikipedia have so much to share.

I find stories that drive our annual fundraising efforts. It's important to convey the incredible diversity of people who've come to rely upon Wikipedia every day.

I see that you are an editor with thousands of edits and that you have an interest in writing about feminism. That is an immensely important topic to be contributing to! I'd really like the opportunity to interview you to tell your story, with the possibility of using it in our materials, on our community websites, or as part of this year’s fundraiser to encourage others to support Wikipedia.

I'm hoping you will elaborate on your story with me, either over the phone, by Skype, by Facebook, by email, or any means you like. Please let me know if you're inclined to take part in the Wikipedia Stories Project and we'll set up a good time to discuss further.

Insults on talk pages[edit]

Hey, dropping WP:SPA on a newbie Talk:Rush_Limbaugh_–_Sandra_Fluke_controversy#This_.22article.22_is_low_budget.2C_spun.2C_CRAP isn't cool, despite your list of accomplishments. Of course, it's a trolling user, but the complaint was out of line. The user went from an anon to a sign in, and your complaint didn't encourage them to straightening up or keep the account. 76.21.107.221 (talk) 23:53, 13 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Re: AWB Caution[edit]

Thanks for finding and correcting the image filenames that I corrupted during a rather long and intense overhaul of date formats in the Classical Anatolia page. However, your blaming of AWB misses the mark entirely; AWB had nothing to do with it. The mistakes were made during a subsequent manual edit using some assist from wikEd, making some changes one instance at a time, and some changes wholesale to a paragraph or two at at time where there were a lot of dates. In the middle of checking the results, I had a small household emergency, and I apparently lost my place and failed to catch changes that were made to filenames. I usually do better. Classical Anatolia[edit]

There are safeguards. They're called admins. Patrollers tag things - mostly in good faith - and admins review the tagging. Very few deletions are done by admins straight off. We tag things like patrollers do if we find something that needs it, and another admin reviews then. (In cases of attack or very obvious copyvio - our article being today and the source being dated 2005 - we may take immediate action.) In this case, two of us looked into things - I was beaten to it. (probably checking too thoroughly...). There are no qualifications for patrolling, except for having an account or IP that isn't blocked at the time, but most of the regulars are pretty good. (Apparently I was, back then. Somewhere round 98% accuracy or something like that - that's how I got to be an admin. Never used Twinkle, Huggle or anything like.) Many patrollers get to be admins after they've served their apprenticeship (=been caught up with...). It very often takes a lot more time to review a tag than it does to place it. And in the event that both the patroller and admin made mistakes, there's WP:DRV. Copyright is a minefield. There are sites that mirror us openly. OK. There are sites that mirror our content and put a little c in a circle (why can't I find one in the Symbols alphabet?) at the bottom. Naughty. Establishing the date isn't always easy. If it's a forum or blog, OK. Ordinary websites don't have dates on them, unless they have a c 2012 date, and our text was posted in 2010 - no probs there... Cut and Paste move[edit]

Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you recently tried to give Tulipa edulis a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into Amana edulis. This is known as a "cut and paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is needed for attribution and various other purposes. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page. This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen. Thank you.
