Japan is a multiethnic society

Its strange to quote a source who seems bent on making a claim that seems highly dubious. Its quite obvious to most people that japan isn't a multiethnic society. Sure there are some foreigners in tokyo and the big cities but the rest of japan is mostly japanese. The definition of multiethnic as stated by cambridge dictionary is a society with many races. If more than 99.5% of the inhabitants are of the asian race how is that multiethnic? Thats not even 1 person out of 100. Thats half a person out of a hundred. To say that japan does have other nationalities but of the same race is one thing but to claim it as a multiethnic society is truly disingenuous! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Usatex (talk • contribs) 03:25, 23 June 2012 (UTC)

That is your contention, but you are not basing your argument with independent reliable sources. The article has one already disagreeing with you. As a scholar of Japan, I can say this. First, it is true that many contend that Japan is a homogeneous nation. That is also, in some ways, official policy. But there are many scholars who see that as an ideological obfuscation of the true differences that exist in Japan, both in the present day and in history. I would say that the dominant view in North American Japan studies is now the latter. I would concede that that section of the article should perhaps be rewritten to reflect the debate about the issue. But cutting the sentence without explanation and without seeking consensus is not helpful. Since I have objected to the edit, the discussion should be taken to the talk page to seek consensus before further edits are made. See WP:EP. Michitaro (talk) 03:35, 23 June 2012 (UTC)

I do think however there is a bit of injustice occurring within it, however. Funkin' on Neptune Tour

Thank you for finding the printed sources for the tour. I have the band members introducing themselves at the end of this video, but unfortunately I can not understand the subtitles. I've given it a try. First, I should remind you that Japanese names are not always clear from the kanji. The same kanji can sometimes be read multiple ways and the only way to know the real way is to ask the person or consult authoritative sources. With that said, here are the band members in order of appearance and in Japanese name order for Japanese (there are dancers and backstage people as well, but I cut those out):
  • Takashima Rin (chorus)
  • Takahashi Yoko (chorus)
  • Dale Sanders (chorus)
  • Suzuki Kazufumi (instrument--that's all it says)
  • Araki Hiroshi (instrument)
  • Nakajima Obao (percussion)
  • Haneda Ichiro (guitar)
  • Sugiyama Takuo (keyboards)
  • Kakizaki Yoichiro (keyboards)

I've blocked 173.58.54.129 for now, but you asked for other solutions as well. Right now, if he's only showing up every once in a while, it's really not a problem just to block the IP. If it becomes seriously persistent, we can examine the range and block the entire thing if there is no impact to legitimate users (i.e. no other traffic in that range). If he hops outside of that range we can explore creating a special edit filter, but that may be rough since there is a very limited pattern over a large number of articles (the same reason protection is unlikely to help).

One thing that does help 'a lot is to create a small page with details and links back to the other IPs used and the pattern. This helps when posting to AIV; I had to spend some time looking at the history of the articles to spot other 173.58's and determine the history of blocks, etc. I would have blocked much faster if that history was briefly laid out in a subpage somewhere.

Notability of Japanese clans

At Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Tomono clan, I tried to move the discussion towards issues of WP:Inherent Notability, but I guess my words were only understood rhetorical questions? Let me be more direct. Do you think there might be consensus support for this sentence:

All historical Japanese clans are good articles when there is any reliable source support?

If so, good. If not, may I ask you to explain why not? I don't think I understand the implied argument well enough.

If you are just asking my opinion, I would not accept the argument that all Japanese clans are inherently notable. They simply vary in size, longevity, and influence. Each has to be judged on a case-by-case basis. My main worry--which is one I have for many Japan-related AfDs--is that people judge notability based on a couple net searches, often in English, even though there are many subjects, like real (not fancruft) medieval history, that are not well-covered on the net or in English. You have to go to printed material in Japanese. Personally, with such subjects, I think several significant references in reliable reference or history books is sufficient to establish WP:GNG. So for instance, if I can find one or two more encyclopedia entries on the Tomono clan, I think notability would be established. If I could find that for the Fuwa, I would ask for relisting. That's another one off to AfD. I think you don't know much about notability guidelines on Wikipedia if you call my redirect a "major change": it was not a major change. One look at the article tells you that there is nothing there that's not related to the band. As for that other one, the one I suppose you saved at the previous AfD by adding more references to a gossipy story, same thing. Wikipedia is not for fan articles. Early Japanese animation

Do you have any interest in researching this area? I've found it very difficult to obtain proper sources and I cannot read Japanese effectively. I really want to fill out our coverage on Wikipedia, but much does not get published in English and it seems you likely live in Japan. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 13:09, 14 July 2013 (UTC)

I have an interest in Japanese cinema in general, but particularly in early Japanese film, be it animated or non-animated. I started a number of the articles on early film companies and figures. In particular, I am looking to purchase or consult material in "日本アニメーション映画史", but I cannot find it at all. It seems to be considered "the best" for works of that era. There are some articles on Shimokawa in Japanese in a journal published by an Okinawan university, such as these: [4] [5]. I do hve a copy of the Nihon animeshon eigashi, but not with me now (I am traveling). It is a solid reference work.

As I noted on the AfD, I have tried to clean it up and found one, maybe two, new sources. As a frequent participant in AfDs, I am not convinced this should not be deleted, though perhaps you could call it borderline. Thanks again, I am grateful for your input, also myself looking at Japanese that seems to be 2 reliable sources, but if you don't mind I would refuse userfying of article, I am not particularly interested in manga and only created it since there was a mismatch between primary in ja.wp and en.wp, plus the other manga of same magazine had articles. I have struck my oppose and consider that the 2 unchallenged sources should be moved, without the artwork which will have to be lost (per my understanding) to a short paragraph perhaps "other manga" in the magazine article under the breakout links to the standalone magazine's more notable manga. Unfortunately, you have not done what you could have. I have started several successful SPI's, reviewed many others, and I know what is involved. Just because Shahwould adds macrons and Hijiri88 did too does not prove sockpuppetry. Other users do that too. You need more specific evidence of other editing patterns and relations. Do you have those? I just looked over some of those accounts and I do think an SPI would be difficult: Hijiri88 is not currently blocked, so it's hard to explain the connection between Hijiri and Shahwould suddenly returning to editing on December 29, after once stopping on August 21. Hijiri hasn't edited since October 13, which might be too old for a checkuser, and also doesn't explain why Shahwould stopped on August 21 and started again on December 29. Shahwould seems to have the tendency to create redirects for kanji pages, but Hijiri does not. There has to be more evidence. Do you have any? Michitaro (talk) 04:54, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

First, please calm down and read WP:CIVIL. If you read the above discussion closely, you can see that I do not believe there is evidence to charge you with being a sockpuppet. I should also remind you that it was I who was polite enough to inform you of a discussion going on to revert many of the edits you have been making. I would in fact advise you to participate in this discussion (now at Talk:Eitarō_Ozawa) or many of the edits you have made in the last month will be reverted. Wikipedia is a collaborative effort (see Wikipedia:Good editing practices), so you should work with other editors before continuing with the kind of edits you have been making. I just thought the center of discussion had turned to Wikipedia policies and other issues, not the specific article in question and whether it satisfies notability. Such a discussion need not remain at the AfD, in part because the AfD is archived as a record for people to consult on whether to recreate the article (if it is deleted) or maybe propose deletion again (if it is not deleted). My personal request was that since you are stationed in Japan (and the person that we are talking about is Japanese) you can go to your local library and check if they have any information on her. I just said veteran editor in the general sense of the term, not in terms of the Wikipedia:Service awards (on that scale you must be in the Master Editor ranks). As I mentioned on your talk page, I am not in Japan but can occasionally use a library with a decent Japan collection. I can check there, but not for a few days. I was able to go to the library today. First, I checked the musical bio dictionaries that the library had in Japanese and found neither Nakamichi, Uenaka, nor Han (though I didn't expect to find Han, since she was originally Korean). I even checked some English sources like Grove Music, but nothing there either. I then did some searching online. Han seems to be teaching at Yale and some other universities, but her bios there don't show any significant prizes, so unless you find find sufficient independent coverage (which I didn't), I don't think she works. Uenaka, however, does claim in her profile [6] to have placed in several international piano competitions. I wasn't able to find proof for the Stepanow or the Bosendorfer results (possibly because they were probably over 20 years ago), but I was able to confirm the third place (tie) result for Viotti-Valsesia in 1990 ([7]--look in the Winners' list section). At that time, her name was Noriko Tobe. So IF (and only if) Viotti-Valsesia is a major music competition, she may clear criterion 9 of WP:MUSICBIO. I did not find significant coverage, however. Mielparque Tokyo According to the Japanese article it was formerly known as "postal savings Tokyo Kaikan", which according to Google translator can be written as "Yūbin Chokin Hall". First, you should know that there were "Yūbin Chokin Kaikan" all around the country and the one you are working on is only the Tokyo one. So the full name of the building was "Tōkyō Yūbin Chokin Kaikan". Second, the Kaikan was not only a concert hall, but included a hotel and other facilities. The concert hall itself was called "Tōkyō Yūbin Chokin Hōru" (Hall). The building was not the Yūbin Chokin Hall, only the hall inside the building was. These distinctions are important. Japanese cinema

Thanks for adding the books. Great to have a Japanese film scholar on board! I've been admiring the quality of Japanese cinema in recent weeks seeing some of the entries in my 1001 movies book. I also noticed the page on genre books you started and added a few there. One question: the film books page is divided in sections by region, but all the subheadings are the adjectival form except for Japan and New Zealand. Thanks for pointing out the name order. I just fixed that. What I was pointing out was an inconsistency in the subheadings. To be consistent, instead of "Japan" it should be "Japanese" since elsewhere it is "Italian" and "British." The Koriyama Shimin Bunka Center opened in 1984, but before it there seems to have been a Koriyama Shimin Bunka Kaikan, but I can't find enough information on it, including the number of seats. Michitaro (talk) 20:59, 12 February 2014 (UTC)
