Voloshinov picture

Way cool. I was first extremely influenced by Marxism and the Philospophy of Language in the mid-1980s, as a philosophy undergrad. A big part of my honors thesis was about Voloshinov, and even my Ph.D. dissertation in philosophy definitely showed strong resonances to VV (but by way of the post-structuralists like Lacan and Althusser; whom I believe VV to have forshadowed in interesting ways). But despite being closer to a "Voloshinovian" than just about anyone else I know of, I had never seen a photo of him before (not that I particularly tried to, but it's interesting to see... not really anything surprising per se: a Russian-looking guy in early 20th C academic garb, but still). It's too bad the photo isn't a bit better quality, but something is certainly better than nothing. Lulu of the Lotus-Eaters 19:43, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

It is really interesting to see a photo from someone whose writings you have read so much. Me myself I am very much influenced by Voloshinov, one of the rare explicitly marxist approaches to language. You are right of course: "a Russian-looking guy in early 20th C academic garb but still". The source of the photo Encyclopédie francophone des linguistes russes et soviétiques, et d'Europe centrale et orientale from the University of Laussane/Slavic Languages/Linguistics, with lots of interesting things on soviet linguistics. This is the only photo of Voloshinov I have ever come across. I have also added the photo to the greek and the russian version of the article.--Michkalas 13:57, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi, I am very pleased that you liked the image Image:MapOfTurkishSpeakers.png and uploaded it to the Greek Wikipedia. Reading the English text I just wrote last night this time in Greek language was truly exciting for me, since I like to study Greek when I have the time. I am unfortunately not a hundred percent sure that the image is flawless and I think it might need modifications. Please let me know if you notice any mistakes. Hi again. I corrected the error of listing Macedonia twice and updated the image with Denmark and Belgium (I knew I was missing something). I am particularly worried about the actual number of Turkish speakers in the Russian Federation: I've seen figures as low as 10,000 and up to around 100,000 in several places, and I decided to go with the figure stated in the Demographics of Russia article.
Also, thank you for your kind comments. I assume your grandmother was forced to leave her home during the Lausanne population exchange. I feel very sad, deep in my heart, when I think of the difficulties of the time. It would be just wonderful, if both nations could continue to live together in peace like they did until that early 20th century and its wars.
I shall also thank you, for contributing to the Turkish language article with scientific and relevant information while a great many of "contributors" here in Wikipedia are struggling to promote their political / nationalistic views with point-edits and revert wars. Age of Greek and Sanskrit

Hi, regarding your edit to Greek language and the relative age of Greek and Sanskrit: As far as I understand, the issue here is whether one counts the oldest preserved texts, or the oldest attested writing. Attestation of Greek is much older in the second sense (Linear B, 14th cent BC), while attestation of Sanskrit is roughly from the same age or just slightly older only in the first sense (according to Vedic Sanskrit, the oldest known Vedic texts were composed around 1200 BC, but written down much later). Greek language article series

Hi, thanks for the constructive discussion. I've been tinkering with some drafts for an article series as I was proposing it, and I've now put up some skeleton articles at:

I hope this makes it a bit clearer why I feel it would be a good idea to separate the articles in this way. Any comments will of course be appreciated! Fut.Perf. ☼ 22:53, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

Yes, it would definitely be nice if we could get input from the others again (and I'm saying this not only because they were supporting "my" position :-) ) - Right now it looks like almost evenly divided, with you, Peter Isotalo and Adreas on the one side versus dab, Miskin, Macrakis and me on the other. Perhaps we need to make a handy comparison of the two models so that outsiders understand the issues better. It would also help to see what, according to your model, needs actual changing in comparison to now. Basically, your suggestion means to leave the scope of Greek language more or less as is. That leaves us with the following issues: What to do with the current Modern Greek article - merge completely into Greek language? Or merge only a summary part of it into Greek language and expand the rest into a new (Modern) Greek dialects article? It currently has the varieties-and-sociolinguistic things about Modern Greek, but not the structural sketch things. Apart from that, I guess we'd only need to rename some of the subarticles to make the naming consistent - in particular, we should move the current Greek dialects to Ancient Greek dialects to make place for a new one.
I'm still not happy that on "your" model, we'll never have separate, easily disambiguated link targets for "Greek as a whole", "Greek, specifically ancient" and "Greek, specifically modern". Let's say, as a silly example, that in an article on Polygamy I wanted to write: "the term polygamy comes from the Greek word γαμώ 'to marry'". Now, that link leads the reader to an article that is essentially about a language where γαμώ means something rather different. ;-) Or even worse (though even less seriously): Imagine I wanted to write the following: "The term polygamy comes from the Greek word "γαμώ", which means 'to marry' in Ancient Greek but 'to f..k' in Modern Greek." Ρε γ... το, οn your proposal, the first and the third link would necessarily go to the same article, which would be confusing to readers. We have these kinds of confusion now in many instances, I think.
As for the categories, I think that should be uncontroversial, we can just go ahead and do it if you feel it's a good idea.
The show/hide buttons in the navigation box were just an experiment of mine, I liked them because they made the thingie smaller. We have so many infoboxes in these articles already. Fut.Perf. ☼ 11:15, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
P.S. Just to give a less silly example of the problem outlined above: Hypothetical text from an article about Cyrillic: "The Cyrillic letter Θ (Fita, [f]) occurs in words borrowed from Greek containing the letter Θ, which was pronounced [tʰ] in Ancient Greek but [θ] in Modern Greek." - Again, we really need three different link targets here. France 24

Hello ! I'm happy to see that there are other Wikipedians out there taking interest in the France 24 article. I just wanted to let you know that even if we don't have the same opinions, it's still a pleasure to work with you. Regarding the sources to the France 24 article, I was thinking that perhaps the cause for some of the discrepency is that I get my news mainly from francohpone sources (AFP, France Télévisions), and it seems like you might get yours from anglophone sources (the BBC). I'm searching through all the articles I can find at the moment and comparing the information. We'll get to the bottom of this. --Aquarelle 00:02, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

EU languages

Thanks for the invitation to wikiproject. For now, I´m rather inclined to concentrate on EU main article, which needs expansion and quality improvements in all sections. The article is what people around the world encounter at the first place when searching for EU issues. It would be a great step seeing more editors like you contributing there. You can do both. How I think about it right now: Have the text copy-edited, wait to see if the copy-editor has any advice to offer you, then go for GA, if GAC is succesful have another peer-review (you can ask simultaneously for a second Biography peer-review, and for a general peer-review). When you think there are no more suggestions in these peer-reviews, go for FAC.

Hmmm ... You know what else you can do: you can also ask for independent reviews. I can recommend you some of the best in Wikipedia: User:SandyGeorgia and User:Yomangani are excellent reviewers. You can politely ask them to have a look at the article; they may even copy-edit it, if they have time. Especially, Sandy will definitely offer a review, if you tell him that I recommended you to ask him to go through the article.--Yannismarou 19:42, 4 February 2007 (UTC).

Hello,

I do agree with your reasoning, but WP:Portugal thinks Durão Barroso's article makes to the A rating, even if barely. It's very far from a GA, though. If WP:Euro Union thinks it deserves a B so much, why is it wasting time telling the world about it? If I were you people, I'd provide what's making it lack an A rating and make everyone in Wikipedia win, but that's just me :)

Project news
  • This is the second Newsletter of the new and enhanced Wikiproject Greece! Please comment on its form, the way it is delivered , its content etc. We need your ideas and contributions!
  • All the "History of Greece" templates have been moved to just plain "Greece", and the project's main page has been updated to use the new names and not the redirects.
  • Our banner has been renamed to {{WPGreece}}). Additionally, "View/hide" hyperlinks for all the additional sections (Criteria for B-Class, peer-review, task forces) have been added to the banner, and a "small option" is also supported. The parameter for the Politics and politicians task force has been changed from task force1 to politics-task-force. For more details, check Wikipedia:WikiProject Greece/Project banner.
Current proposals and discussions
  • A proposal for the creation of task forces for other areas, such as arts, sports, etc. has been made here. The creation of a task force to periodically check article within the scope of the project against "erosion" has been also proposed here. Please, participate in the above discussions and express yourself.
  • Galleries of images at Greece, Athens, and Thessaloniki will probably get removed. A number were already removed from Greece. Interested editors are requested to make sure that any of these that aren't at Wikimedia Commons get moved there.
  • A new category, Category:Greek Civil War, has been created. Please populate it with relevant articles on revolutionary organisations, events, leaders etc.

Commissioners

Hi, I created the List of European Commissioners by nationality (as it is now known) and suggested the Romanian European Commissioner page be merged into it. You supported this idea, as did the creator of the Irish page. However the creator of the Bulgarian page has not. I would like to ask you to give your opinion on that and whether you would still support merging the Romanian page if the Bulgarian page still exists. Hey, I was reading over the article again and comparing it to other articles about EU commissioners. In terms of coverage, it's the best of its kind, but you may want to include an IPA transcription of his name's pronunciation.
