Did someone portalize Template:Sustainability and Energy Development per the TfD outcome before you deleted it? If so, what is the name of the new portal? If not, please undelete it as I would like to portalize it. Thank you. CME94 11:12, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

I believe that SkierRMH portalized the template into Portal:Sustainable development. [1] Mike Peel 15:46, 26 October 2007 (UTC)
He was certainly preparing to, but that portal hasn't been touched for a month. Now that the template is gone, all of the transport-related and similar links are fading in my memory. Could you undelete it, perhaps to my userspace, long enough for me to actually portalize it, please? CME94 16:05, 26 October 2007 (UTC)
Ah, I see. I've put a copy of the latest revision of the template, sans category, to User:CME94/Template:Sustainability and Energy Development. When you're done with it, please either let me know or tag it with {{db-user}}. Mike Peel 07:19, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

Thank you! I just inserted it into the portal under "Main Topics" as a default-collapsed plain-header navbox entitled "More topics in sustainability and energy development" with the portal's colors. I think it works very well just like that. CME94 14:06, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

Template:Space telescopes

Astronomical navigation templates – used for navigation between objects or patterns in the same astronomical or solar system category

Didn't seem appropriate. --Ng.j (talk) 09:01, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

Hmm; that looks like something that was added some time after I created the category [2]. I originally intended it to be a catchall category for all astronomical related navigational templates. It still seems to hold templates like Template:CMB experiments, which is a similar one to your template. I've generalised the description a bit now, but will leave it up to you as to whether this template goes into the category. Mike Peel (talk) 09:53, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Alias Season 2 DVD.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Alias Season 2 DVD.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 06:49, 1 January 2008 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Bones buried deep.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Bones buried deep.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. List of space telescopes

Hey Mike, I remembered your great work over at Jodrell Bank Observatory so I took a look at your list. I've left a few comments, none of them on their own are deal breakers but there are a sufficient number of them to prevent me supporting at the moment. Don't hesitate to give me a shout if I've not been clear in my comments. All the best. The Rambling Man (talk) 17:13, 1 March 2008 (UTC)

Hey I'm just dropping by to let you know that I think you did a great job with this list, it's very good. I was reading the featured list nomination page and saw that one of the requests was to create stubs for the red links, well I figured I'd help you out with that. I'll start writing stubs tonight.. PS: I'm the guy who wrote/compiled(used some material from nasa) the Granat article. Cheers! RIP-Acer (talk) 21:00, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

OK, like I promised It's all blue now :). That said, I did have problems finding sources for the Cosmic Radiation Satellite, it's easy to find sources for its successor (CORSA-b) but for the first one I couldn’t find anything apart from Astronautix so it could use a more scholarly source if you happen to know one. On a second thought perhaps you could remove it from the list altogether after all it's the only one in there that was a launch failure. Oh and thanks for the comments on Granat, I had thought of expanding it even further to try to reach FA but without speaking Russian its pretty hard to find additional sources... Albany Crown Update

Please can you contact the developer Albany Assests on info@albanyassets.com to request an update on the development as the current wiki entry is no longer accurate and potentially damaging. To my knowledge, the developer is solvent and the development is going ahead. Please contact the developer to confirm this. Thanks! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.27.161.208 (talk) 01:37, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

Hello. As soon as I can find a reliable source saying that things are progressing, I'll update the article. At present, though, what the article says is the only thing I can find a reference for [3]. If the developers have a problem with the article, then if they release a press release or similar saying that things are progressing (or even update their website), then I'll update the article. Hi Mike, Please reconsider your decision to indefinitiely semi-protect Big Bang. This course of action should be reserved for high profile articles that attract massive vandalism. List of moons

Mike: Hello... nice work on the list. One minor tweak - I've removed "known" from the introduction to Earth. I hope this is OK; as I mentioned in my edit summary, given that we are talking about the Earth I think it would be a major surprise to find another moon at this point in time, as opposed to the other planets (which we can only observe from afar). As well, it seems that if we put "known" in, we just invite changes. Thoughts? --Ckatzchatspy 22:13, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

Unknown moons

Mercury: [4] Ceres: [5]

As your quoted source notes, NASA states definitively that "Venus has no moons".

I suppose "no known moons" is defensible for Ceres, but a stronger wording like "There is no evidence that Ceres possesses any moons" might be better. The problem with the wording is that the cases are different from those planets where we can expect, with great likelihood, that more moons will be discovered, but at present we can only account for X number of "known moons". In the case of Ceres the likelihood of discovering a satellite is small. In the cases of Mercury and Venus the likelihood is close to nil. RandomCritic (talk) 11:59, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your addition to the article. Not so sure though about the removal of the en dashes; the MoS says they should be used "to convey the sense of to or through, particularly in ranges" and gives ranges of page numbers as an example (which is why I laboriously used them). Cheers. Peter I. Vardy (talk) 21:33, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

General relativity is now up for peer review here; I saw your name on the peer review volunteer list and would like to invite you to contribute. Many thanks in advance, Markus Poessel (talk) 17:57, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

I agree with your concern at WP:COIN about people associated with the award editing the article. This led me to take a look at Category:Science and engineering awards to see if I could find any good examples to show how it could be done better. From a very quick look the ones I checked were all rudimentary and not much to boast about as articles. (What we tend to see is long lists of recipients, containing many red links). Do you have any good example articles to propose, so we could give the Clarke people some ideas for improvement? EdJohnston (talk) 22:52, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

camera

Hi there

Would be great if you're in the area, to get some updated images of the work on the Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal. The work is being undertaken here : http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=53.479752,-2.261564&spn=0.004795,0.014334&t=h&z=17 (between Oldfield Road, East Ordsall Lane, and the Hampson St Bridge). The commons category is here http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Manchester%2C_Bolton_and_Bury_Canal Parrot of Doom (talk) 08:40, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

You won't see the canal there, because in those images its still buried :) The canal is quite visible now from East Ordsall Lane, have a wander over there and you'll see it, its huge :) - http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Middlewood_locks_nov_2007.jpg Parrot of Doom (talk) 10:48, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Your camera may be better than mine, but it won't fit in a shirt pocket! At some time in the future there will be an article on housing in Manchester. There's a couple of rebuilt one up one downs behind Oldham Street which will come in. Beacause they have rebuilt, they aren't going anywhere, so there's no rush. There's another building which may well fall into the Medlock at any time though. If you stand on the Medlock bridge in Charles Street and look upstream (with the Lass behind you), on the left is a building identified by Hylton as an 18th century slum dwelling. There are some 'structures' jutting over the river with an obvious purpose. I have a couple of pics, but they're not outstanding by a long way. The building next to the bridge (Paradise?) was the home of Factory Records and the cost of it help to bankrupt them IIRC. Regards, Mr Stephen (talk) 11:44, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Your suggestion "Presumably it's the building on the east side of the river, with a newer building to the north, and a building site to the south?" is exactly right. The building site has a building on it now, though. Regards, Mr Stephen (talk) 17:00, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
That's the building alright. If we were limited to one picture, I think the ones overlooking the river would be best, and number 8 would be my choice. As you say, pity about the light, but overall it's about right. Regards, Mr Stephen (talk) 11:47, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

The reason for deletion on this image was actually "Unencyclopedic, Absent uploader" although most of the nominations are "Orphaned, Unencyclopedic". There was no discussion on the image so it was deleted. The mistake was that the caption of the image was not tagged with an "ifdc" tag to let others reader know of the pending deletion and invite comment. The image has been restored and the nomination withdrawn.

In general 99% of the images nominated at WP:IFD are crap. Yes, they are free, but they are crap - images of unknown garage bands, people flipping the bird, lots of penis pictures, people's pets and faces of long absent users. We do not need to clog the Commons with this crap. Any good stuff that is orphaned is generally moved to the Commons after the IFD review. I oppose a "standard rule" that any freely licensed content be moved to the Commons. -Regards, Nv8200p talk 15:05, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

Agree with your proposal. Understand the Commons problem— it's not my problem, mine is with my downloaded and

deleted "Image:17AHuntingdon 60059TraceryR.jpg" (Speedy deleted per (CSD I8). So why can't they just leave the image duplicated where it is. WP may be on the verge of losing an exasperated editor who can stand this sort of this mindless bureaucratic nonsense no longer.--John of Paris (talk) 23:45, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

deleted "Image:17AHuntingdon 60059TraceryR.jpg" (Speedy deleted per (CSD I8), was an image available as a bit-for-bit identical copy on the Wikimedia Commons. using TW)

What is this nonsense? I am the author of this image which I described fully when uploading it. Please put it back immediately and stop wasting my time! There are enough problems with copyright as it is due to paranoid WP policy. I am perfectly happy for a copy to appear on Commons, but leave that for others to do. — a furious--John of Paris (talk) 10:16, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the kind words. The thing is that I now have to go to Commons and find out how to download the bloody thing to the article again. I do not want that time-wasting hassle, which keeping it in two places would have avoided. I don't think you will have to look far for the source of the confusion: just have a look on User talk:Sdrtirs a new editor and I am not the only one complaining, because he doesn't read the information properly. What you say about historical images holds good for for the 1950s and 60s. when a large number of amateurs were taking photos. The big problem is with the inter-war years where most images are still in copyright. This makes illustration of a salient point very difficult (particularly for the Gresley Pacifics); the historical value of my photo is very limited as it is only valid for post-1960 as regards the general aspect of the locomotive. Cheers,--John of Paris (talk) 11:43, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

Sorry for not coming back on this sooner, but have been away for a few days. As far as I can understand the the page was removed by someone else, so I was not referring to you as "some idiot" and I think I have always remained civil with you personally and will always do so, especially as you have been so helpful. I had the impression last week that the image had disappeared from the article for a short time, but on checking the history, this does seems to have been mistaken; as long as it remains in the article without intervention from me, I have no problem, but the first news about all this was a word on my talk page (not from yourself) stating that "A tag has been placed on Image:17AHuntingdon 60059TraceryR.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I8 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is available as a bit-for-bit identical copy on the Wikimedia Commons under the same name, or all references to the image on Wikipedia have been updated to point to the title used at Commons". As my interest is in content and not administration, you will understand that my patience is short on the latter side and that the message was a couched in clumsy terms (and I don't care about the technical point that Wikipedia Commons is separate from Wikipedia itself). Anyway, no point in cranky old bugger like me bothering you with this any further, except to add that the copyright problem alluded to in my last post is a real one and someone should find out if something can be done about Crown copyright issues where old photos are essential to putting over salient points in articles. That problem is big enough as it is: nuff sed, best wishes--John of Paris (talk) 08:29, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
