Block

FYI, I went ahead and restored the bot's block because I felt that was where consensus was, and with the multiple threads it made sense to do it now rather than have it keep editing against community consensus. I think this falls under an appropriate restoration of administrative actions under WP:WHEEL since it'd been discussed in multiple places and this appeared to be rough consensus in favour of the block. I also have a thread at Wikipedia:Bots/Noticeboard#Status_of_bot in case I'm off my rocker and reading this wrong. I hope you have an excellent holiday weekend. Desktop improvements prototype

Hello, Mike Peel!

Thanks for taking the time to participate in the user feedback round for our desktop improvements prototype. This feedback is super valuable to us and is currently being used to determine our next steps. We have published a report gathering the main takeaways from the feedback and highlighting the changes we’ll make based on this feedback. Please take a look and give us your thoughts on the talk page of the report. To learn more about the project overall and the other features we’re planning on building in the future, check out the main project page.

Base citation template for WD stuff?

I have been completing data for citations for works at enWS with {{cite TIWW}} where I have the data in WD as I do the transclusions. Do we have a base WD-focused template so I can just move to complete laziness, so if I construct the cite templates properly and then just enter these templates without parameters? ultimate infobox-style for citations! [Noting that things like {{cite Australasia}} and {{cite IrishBio}} would also migrate, though would need data audited prior.]

The triangle of s:Thom's Irish Who's Who/Hamilton, Rt. Hon. Lord George Francis <-> Hamilton, Rt. Hon. Lord George Francis (Q90141697) <-> Lord George Hamilton should be made as easy as possible. And then eventually move to a report where WD knows that it is loaded with WS data, it can return a query to show articles where the citation template needs to be added. — billinghurst sDrewth 03:32, 17 April 2020 (UTC)

@Billinghurst: The closest I can think of is {{Cite Q}}. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 06:33, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
Thanks.

I have come to the conclusion, that I just totally suck with anything about calling WD data. There is some inner thinking that I just don't get. I will just do it the long way, my skills, that they are, lie in other areas. — billinghurst sDrewth 08:58, 17 April 2020 (UTC)

@Billinghurst: @RexxS: is very good at this, and is a good person to ask for help. Enwp's negative attitude to Wikidata integration has depressed me about it right now, so I'm not doing so much development work. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 09:26, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
Yep, I have bothered them at enWS, and not wanting to overdo my welcome, would prefer the help at enWS. I thought that there may just have been something already. I know I suitably uglified {{wikisource author}} myself, but the threading the needle of references <bleh!>. It isn't that important, the additional data fields aren't burdensome, I was just futureproofing, and maybe concepting. — billinghurst sDrewth 09:32, 17 April 2020 (UTC)

Please, the description!

Hi Mike! Great pictures from the Natural History Museum in Stockholm here! But you forgot the most important thing: To describe WHAT it shows! Just a lot of stones without explanation doesn't say much. This is a mistake many people make when uploading pictures. Especially important when it comes to images that do not "speak for themselves" such as stones and minerals. Something you surely understand as an expert. Please fill in descriptions of the pictures when you have the time. / Best regards, Frankie Fouganthin/--LaFotisto (talk) 20:49, 26 April 2020 (UTC)

@LaFotisto: Sorry, I try to add context when I upload photos, but I don't always have the details (beyond 'this museum'), or the time (although I try to go back to older photos to add more info when I can, but other editors are often more knowledgeable than I am!). I've added a few more cateogries for context; for the stones I also uploaded wider angle photos including the display panels, I hope that helps. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 18:53, 29 April 2020 (UTC)
@Mike Peel: I understand. And thanks - the display panels helps a lot! The reason from the beginning was that I became interested in minerals and rocks and was looking for pictures in Commons. When I saw your pictures I was delighted because it was exactly the kind of clear differences in the different rocks I was looking for. But quickly I was disappointed because there was no information on each individual stone. But I can do enough now with the display panels. Have a nice day! /--LaFotisto (talk) 02:01, 30 April 2020 (UTC)

Kettleness

Hi, Mike Peel; thanks for connecting Kettleness to the Wikidata, there was some weird de-link situation going on with the article and the page on Wikicommons which I could not resolve, but you have by connecting it, so hurrah! Regards. The joy of all things (talk) 19:51, 10 May 2020 (UTC)

ASTER

Hi Mike, Seeing you in the WMUK chat reminded me that I wanted to ask for your help about ASTER as a way of measurng height of mountains etc - I am trying to disambiguate Aster & on the list is ASTER (spacecraft) but I'm not sure this is the right link to put in - an example is on Reclus (Andes Mountains). Any ideas?— Rod talk 17:23, 16 May 2020 (UTC)

@Rodw: Nice to see you at the chat! Sorry I had to leave. I think you're looking for Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer, the Brazilian spacecraft hasn't been launched yet. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 17:26, 16 May 2020 (UTC)
Great thanks. — Rod talk 17:29, 16 May 2020 (UTC)

This is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.

You have shown interest in discussions about infoboxes and to edits adding, deleting, collapsing, or removing verifiable information from infoboxes. Due to past disruption in this topic area, a more stringent set of rules called discretionary sanctions is in effect. Any administrator may impose sanctions on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies, or the page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic.

For additional information, please see the guidance on discretionary sanctions and the Arbitration Committee's decision here. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor.

May 2020 - II

Do not ever, EVER remove a comment from someone else’s talk page (as you did here) just because you don’t like it. It’s doubly shocking you did so because you’re supposed to be an admin, and so your supposed to know the damned rules. I’m happy to drop you into ANI if you try that stunt again, but I do hope you don’t even think about it. SchroCat (talk) 20:55, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

I don't know what game you and Cassianto are playing, but please do not ping me just to insult and lie about me. Mike Peel (talk) 11:31, 23 May 2020 (UTC)
I am not playing any sort of game, I am responding to you deleting someone else’s comment on a third party’s talk page. I have also neither pinged you nor lied to you. Again I have to ask you to strike an untruthful comment you have made about me. - SchroCat (talk) 12:53, 23 May 2020 (UTC)
As you've been highly active in the hour since I informed you about your untruthful statement, and have yet to make suitable amends, I shall remove it for you. Please do not lie about me again. - SchroCat (talk) 14:07, 23 May 2020 (UTC)
Very ironic. Perhaps you could do the same to the edit you were complaining about me removing? Mike Peel (talk) 14:20, 23 May 2020 (UTC)
There is nothing ironic: you have lied and not taken down the post when this was pointed out to you. I don’t care what you were deleting in the first place, or why, but the act of deleting it is plain wrong. If you object to it there are ways of dealing it and you need to do things properly, not act like a newbie who hasn’t got a clue about the rules. - SchroCat (talk) 14:29, 23 May 2020 (UTC)
