Epsilon Eridani

Hello,

User Iridia suggested that you might have an interest in the FAC underway here concerning the article about Epsilon Eridani. Thank you. Regards, RJH (talk) 15:23, 5 April 2011 (UTC)

I'm not an exoplanet or stellar expert - stars are much too small for me. ;-) I'll see if I can persuade an astronomer at the meeting I'm currently at to take a look, though. Mike Peel (talk) 15:54, 5 April 2011 (UTC)

Cancer research

I saw this in the news, sounds like a great idea. Does this kind of project happen often?--Physics is all gnomes (talk) 16:05, 8 April 2011 (UTC)

Not very often right now - this was pretty much the pilot event in the UK. :-) I'm hopeful that it can be replicated at other organisations/groups around the UK, though. It's one of the many things that Wikimedia UK is up to; we're running a WikiConference next Saturday in Bristol if you want to come along and find out more. Thanks. Wikipedians at Man Uni

Hello. I am Mancunian Wikipedian and also a Man Uni alumni.

I think Manchester University (or just Manchester in general) should have it's own Wikipedia Society. I understand you are busy but would you be interested?--Aa2-2004 (talk) 13:45, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

Also great work on the Upper Brook Street Chapel article.--Aa2-2004 (talk) 13:47, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

It would be great for there to be a Manchester wikipedia society. Sadly, as a staff member, I can't really help form one or join it. Perhaps this should be a topic to discuss at the upcoming wikimeet - Wikipedia:Meetup/Manchester 7? & thanks for the comment on the upper brook street chapel article - it's a real shame that the building is in the state it is now. :-( Mike Peel (talk) 13:49, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

I was not aware of the Wiki-meetup. Will try to make it.--Aa2-2004 (talk) 16:58, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

Hi Mike Peel, I changed the geonotice for Cambridge from "Sunday 21st May" to "Saturday 21st May", as the meetup page says that the meetup is taking place on the 21st, which is a Saturday. If this was wrong, feel free to revert. Best. Acalamari 09:56, 16 May 2011 (UTC)

Feedback on the European Southern Observatory article

Dear Mr. Peel,

I am writing regarding the recent submission of the article on the European Southern Observatory (ESO) for peer review. I have noticed you are an experienced Wikipedian with an interest in astronomy and astrophysics so I was wondering if you would be able to give a read through the article and let me know what should be improved for it to meet FA criteria.

Thanks in advance for your help, Barbara Ferreira (on behalf of Lars Lindberg Christensen, director of ESO's education and public outreach department.) Lars Lindberg Christensen (talk) 14:47, 16 May 2011 (UTC)

I'd like to suggest an amendment to the Cine City page..

Hi, I'm David Babsky, who's mentioned in that article as an owner of Cine City.

(I've mentioned this in the Discussion page about that article, but there doesn't seem to have been any response to that.)

I'd like to suggest a factual amendment to the CC article; the last sentence of the 'history' section reads thus: "It was purchased by David Babsky, who kept the cinema open until July 2001, when it closed due to competition[3][10] from a new multiplex cinema in nearby East Didsbury.[7]" This is not quite true, and SHOULD read: "It was purchased by David Babsky, who kept the cinema open until July 2001, when it closed - reportedly due to competition[3][10] from a new multiplex cinema in nearby East Didsbury[7], but actually because Babsky's Mancunian parents had died in '97 and '99 and, having no further reason to remain in Manchester, he sold it and returned to London."

The first sentence of the next 'Closure and redevelopment' section should read, to be factually accurate: "Just prior to the cinema's closure, it was purchased by Develop UK,[11] ..." etc.

Instead of making these corrections myself, I thought that as you seem to have supervised this article you might prefer to make these corrections yourself.

All the best, Yours, David. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DavidBabsky (talk Edited Fri 2nd Sept 2011, 3:40 pm. DavidBabsky (talk) 14:41, 2 September 2011 (UTC) • contribs) 14:39, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi David. Thanks for getting in touch. :-) The problem here is that Wikipedia articles can only use information that has been stated elsewhere - otherwise there's no way for the readers of the article to be able to double-check that information. See Wikipedia:Verifiability, not truth for the background on this - and note that although a lot of what that page says doesn't directly apply here, it still does in general terms. When I was contributing information to the article (which, BTW, was both a pleasure in terms of digging out the information about the cinema's history and development, and a tragedy for how the story ended), I made a point of checking that everything stated in the article could be tied down to reliable external sources. Given the completely open nature of the construction of Wikipedia articles, this strikes me as being a very important approach to stick with (e.g. should the article be vandalised, either on Wikipedia or on a content reuser's site, the errors introduced could be easily identified by a little research). So: please could you publish this information in a source that can be referenced in the article? E.g. could you write an article describing Cine City's history for a local newspaper or historical society publication, or put together a website describing the cinema's history? I'm sure that it would make for fascinating reading, as well as being a good reference for the Wikipedia article. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 22:06, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

Many thanks, Mike - I've left my reply on the Talk:Cine_City,_Withington page. Yours, David. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.233.70.249 (talk) 15:35, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

Physics World Article

Well done on the article in the September Physics World. Nice to see CC images used and credited. Is there a plan to target fields other than Physics too? JMiall 17:03, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

Thanks. :-) This was part of WMUK's larger theme of reaching out to scholarly organisations in the UK - but those of us involved can only do so much (being busy volunteers and all), so we'd love help in reaching out to other fields, or to watch others take the initiative, if you're interested. Mike Peel (talk) 21:48, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
Possibly, but I'm mostly a physicist myself so Physics World would be the obvious fit. Something like IEEE Spectrum or Engineering & Technology magazine might be options along the same kind of lines as Physics World but covering a different readership. What was the origin of your article, did it stem from the IOP workshop contact or earlier? JMiall 11:44, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

Assistance needed regarding GLAM / best practices.

Hello Mike, I wonder if you would be kind enough to help me please. I had a great idea given to me last night by one of the visitors to the #wikipedia-en IRC channel, to have the Open University produce some short basic chemistry lectures for Wikimedia Commons. Now it just happens that I live in the town where their headquarters, Walton Hall is located, so I'm pretty much in the right place to try and discuss this with the OU.

The problem is, I've never approached an organisation like this, and I am looking to find out if there are any best practices or suggested routes given by the WMF for approaching public organisations with requests for material.

I found your name on the list of contacts at the Outreach Wiki, so I'm hoping you might be able to give me a few pointers in this respect. It strikes me as a very good idea, and I'd like to pursue it if possible.

Your help would be warmly welcomed.

I think Meg Schwamb from Planet Hunters mentioned that the Zooniverse is keen to support a wikipedian science edit day in Oxford - we can provide a venue, and potentially recruit experts from the university to be on hand to help improve articles with the assistance of wikipedians. As an expert in these things, I'm interested in whether you think they'd be any take up, what we could do to attract people, and how to find enthusiastic people. All thoughts welcome! British Library

Hi!

This is just to let you know that I've just recently started as the Wikipedian in Residence at the British Library, building off the 2011 British Library project which you participated in. I'll be working here full-time for the next six months; I'm still meeting people here to discuss projects that they're interested in working on, but if you've any suggestions, please do let me know!

We've currently got two events in the calendar:

and I'm in the process of restarting the individual collaborations program - there's currently one article with a specialist looking for a Wikipedian, and hopefully I'll be adding more over the next few days.

(I'm planning to use the old participants list for any future messages - if you'd rather not be contacted, please leave a note there.)

Thanks, Andrew Gray (talk) 11:26, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the message, but I was kinda already aware of that. ;-) Congrats! Look forward to following and participating in the BL GLAM projects over the next 6 months! Mike Peel (talk) 12:30, 9 May 2012 (UTC)
