Eh?[edit]

Could you please explain to me how writing an article on an airline is advertising? If that's advertising you had better go and strip down every other airline pages to one sentence, its only fair. LukeOcana (talk) 19:58, 2 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You need to discuss this on the related talk page but we dont normally list timetables and other promotional material in other airline related articles, also note it isnt actually an airline either. MilborneOne (talk) 20:06, 2 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

IP trouble[edit]

Michael, User:85.1.75.33 and User:193.5.216.100 (appears to be one person) is continuing to dump text at Talk:Pilatus Aircraft and Mowag. Are too involved to block these IPs? Thanks. I'm too close/past 3RR to risk reverting further today. - BilCat (talk) 19:40, 3 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Never seen Mowag before I will have a look, with regard to Pilatus as I blocked the main article it shouldnt be a problem, a bit concerned that if we stop talk page access the user cant respond, but on the other hand the user seems to fail huge on competence issues. Him/her changing IPs doesnt help us. MilborneOne (talk) 19:49, 3 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have just removed the text dump from Talk:Pilatus Aircraft and left a warning note on the two IP talk pages about disruptive editing. It maybe better if others revert the article changes for now. Its a shame he just cant tell us in English what he wants to do, do we have any German speakers? MilborneOne (talk) 20:40, 3 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hum he dumped it back again as soon as I gave him a warning, I have given a 48-hour rest so he can consider the situation. MilborneOne (talk) 20:44, 3 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
On the Mowag article, the ip seems to have copied stuff over from a number of articles on de:wikipedia (which the editor appears to have created), all of which are unreferenced, and several of the de: articles appear to be in the process of deletion because of the lack of references and possibly notability. The editor has also had a go at Saurer, but in that case has completely wrecked the article.Nigel Ish (talk) 21:50, 3 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have semi-protected Saurer and Mowag to encourage discussion (when the IPs 48-hour blovk runs out (or they get another IP!) MilborneOne (talk) 22:10, 3 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Page move assistance[edit]

For Sportspeople in Columbus, Ohio to Sportspeople from Columbus, Ohio. The standard naming convention is Sportspeople from Foo, Foo. Check here[1] to verify what I'm saying. Can you rename it or do I have to go through CFD? Thanks....William 14:35, 4 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Always best to use CFD for cats, but dont you just need to create a new cat Category:Sportspeople from Columbus, Ohio and move the people into that cat. Leave the subcats where they are in Category:Sportspeople in Columbus, Ohio as the "in" family of cats appear to be for categories related to different sports teams rather than individuals. Sorry but the light bulb didn't go off in my head about this article being done by Ryan till after I started the AFD. The one thing about the article that didn't make it look like Ryan's work- His putting the article in the yearly aviation accidents and incidents template. The most recent year is always on my watch list and that's how I was alerted to the article....William 16:40, 5 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Two IP vandals[edit]

1. I just tagged the two IPs from Canada's Rogers Communications to the long-term date format vandal. His favorite is Cathay Pacific. Both former IPs were blocked multiple times, last ones for six months. See: Category:Suspected Wikipedia sockpuppets of 99.254.158.227

2. Can I ask you to put a three- to six-month IP protection on Dubai International Airport? This page is the favorite of the vandal from India who randomly changes large amounts of statistics, mostly airport runway lengths and floor areas (mostly enlarging/exaggerating). See: Category:Suspected Wikipedia sockpuppets of 121.246.65.103 HkCaGu (talk) 07:13, 8 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have semi-protected Dubai International as requested and also Cathay Pacfic for a month. As I recently edited the Cathay Pacific page I have asked at the airline project for somebody else to check my admin action on that one. MilborneOne (talk) 19:15, 8 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Flags in infoboxes[edit]

I see you've removed a number of flags from some articles' infoboxes. Is this based on a current style guide directive, or something of a personal preference? I've been following the style found on dozens of other infoboxes and I find the flags most useful. Unless there is a common, agreed approach to this (be great to have a definitive answer) I'm considering adding them back. But, out of courtesy, thought it prudent to post here before undoing your edits, and get your opinion. Cheers Londonclanger (talk) 11:34, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, you are doing some good work on these aviator articles, not personal I understand it is a guideline somewhere, I will see if I can find it. Certainly never seen the medal images used in RAF articles before. If I cant find it I will ask at the Mil project. I will not remove them again if you add them back until I can find the guidance or consensus. MilborneOne (talk) 11:47, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
To add the Template:Infobox_military_person refers to WP:ICONDECORATION which basicaclly says if flags are just used for decoration then dont use them. Also WP:INFOBOXFLAG says Generally, flag icons should not be used in infoboxes.. MilborneOne (talk) 12:18, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the links, interesting, if somewhat unclear guidance. Doesn't seem to be a rock solid agreement just yet. And as you can well see there is a variance across the many articles. I was following suit on the country flags (which I do find useful, esp. when an American flew for the RAF for example). The medals ones were seen on a few articles and I thought it was also useful but I can understand that is can be seen as overkill to some. I'll probably maintain country flags but drop the medals for now. The use of "Generally" as a guide really isn't all that useful, I think you'll agree, can be taken in all sorts of ways. Any hoot, the main thing is the articles are getting attention which is the main thing. (Perhaps we'll get a bot in future that will sift and rectify infoboxes.) Check out Cavehill plane crash and 1945 Sperrins Avro Anson crash too. I nominated both for CSD but an editor took down the one for the former....William 11:07, 17 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I notice two traits that were common in Ryan's previous efforts - poor article naming and incorrect date. Notwithstanding the general lack of notability of the incident of itself, the sourcing doesn't stack up well for Cavehill but I posted a merge suggestion to the film mentioned. GraemeLeggett (talk) 16:03, 17 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry about the delay I had a real life distraction, I have raised an SPI of Niceguy771 to see if it is Ryan, the Anson article rings some bells but Cavehill plane crash is not his normal style. Although Ryan may be playing games. MilborneOne (talk) 10:29, 18 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Thank you for your work at Wikipedia! I wanna ask you why did you remove the head picture on the article PSA 1771, on this edit of yours. Fly Jamaica Airways[edit]

Michael, I've been trying to clean up the Fly Jamaica Airways, but I'm not that good with airline articles. Would you mind having a look? I've been able to add some sources, but it still needs some work. Also, could you check to see if there was a deleted version of the article? I vaguely recall reading about it somewhere a few mpnths ago, but I'm not sure if it was here. If so, it might be usefulll to have the earlier revisions added to the history. Thanks. - BilCat (talk) 01:37, 14 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Had a quick look Bill and corrected a typo! cant see any deleted versions. The article is not bad for a start-up airline with only one aircraft, perhaps we need to look out for some better sources when they do the first flight. I presume that the 757 is still N-reg as N524AT it is probably leased. I will have a dig around and see if I can add anything. MilborneOne (talk) 18:53, 14 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Something Rotten Denmark[edit]

Pre-Disclouser: I am a long time member of AVSIG.

Dear Milborne,

I usually try to stick to editing, but in the case for the call for the speedy deletion of THE AVIATION SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP/AVSIG what is being done is shameful. And I don't care if that page is deleted. Hundreds of pages get deleted every month. And I don't get emotionally attached to pages or edits. In fact I walk away so fast and go on to other edits, the person deleting my edit or page thinks I am up to something. It is far worst. I am saying something, that in the hope in the future you will see a certain pattern by one party that is distasteful to WP Ethics that action will be taken. Because the title of this section is so true. Even I found it hard to believe. Sorry to have bothered you. And like always I try not to bother the administrators. But this case is so ugly I had to for a free conscious and self respect.

Hi MilbourneOne, just want to inform you that there is a problem with Slovakian Airlines, an article you created back in 2011. I think it might fail the WP:CORP notability guideline, because I can't find any reference that any revenue flights were operated at all (this would be a case of WP:BALL). There is this link, which only states that it had one aircraft leased from Armavia. Per this amateur fleet list, this single 737-500 stayed with Slovakian Airlines only for three months. I cannot find any photos which show this aircraft registered as OM-BTS at any other airport than at Bratislava. Do you have any deeper insight and further information? Best regards --FoxyOrange (talk) 19:47, 15 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You are probably right I cann only find http://www.airplane-pictures.net/operator.php?p=3777 with the aircraft painted as OM-BTS but I cant find any evidence of them actually operating it on a revenue! I will have a look around to see if I can find anything. MilborneOne (talk) 19:54, 15 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

United seasonal flight to Guam at Shanghai Pudong Airport[edit]

I was wondering if United's flight to Guam should be listed as a destination at the PVG page? I'm guessing those flights are occasional charters which cannot be booked/found directly from united.com but rather a travel agency or some kind. It has been added to that page multiple times in the past few months. 20:51, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

It looks like a charter - it is not mentioned on Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport and it is probably not notable enough to mention, we should not list every ad-hoc or ocassional charter flight. MilborneOne (talk) 21:02, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Can you watch it?? The user who added it will probably add it again. Thanks! Snoozlepet (talk) 21:07, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

OTRS Question[edit]

Hi Milborne. I wish to upload a photograph to Wikipedia that is subject to copyright. The owner of this is fine with it coming onto Wikipedia. I was wondering how i go about this? Do i first upload the photo then submit it to OTRS? How do i submit it to OTRS? Thanks for the help. --JetBlast (talk) 21:19, 1 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Two methods, they can upload it to the internet somewhere with a declaration that it is released with one of the acceptable licences or they can email into OTRS - have a read of Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials which explains it. If you decide to upload before permission has been received you can add a Template:OTRS Pending but if permission doesnt appear it will be deleted (typically after a few months). Clearly a slur on Sally Irvin and ICAN and the link with the Foundation and Tony Stewart are not really proven and not really relevant as far as I can see. Concerned about the second sentence as it is clearly inappropriate opinion which reflects on the subject even if only by some made up association, I would use RD#2 but it is borderline. A wide variety of IPs seems to have edited some of these articles in a relatively short period - even before the main registered account was blocked. It might be possible that there are several real people involved in this, not just one...? One of the 180.149 addresses made an edit which hints that maybe they're a schoolchild. bobrayner (talk) 12:54, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your helping here. I will reply with what I know to you here and copy it on the file discussion page. According to http://ibdb.com/production.php?id=1588 the internet Broadway data base, Snafu ran at the Hudson Theatre in 1944 and then moved to the Biltmore Theatre on 1/01/45. Broadway theatre's make there own photos and art for plays (this was not a touring company, but a change in venue on Broadway). The picture is dated 1945 and says "Snafu" on the back indicating this would have been for the Biltmore. Although not as apparent in the scanned copy, you can see where the photo was cropped for presentation. There is a faint line in a geometric shape around McVeagh's head. This, in addition to the title "Snafu" on the back indicate it was used at the theatre lobby picture board. Think back to a time before computers. To create a lobby display of the actors photos, the photos would be placed on one sheet and then an overlay of construction paper with cutouts would be placed over that. The pictures would have been cropped ahead of time to design the overlay in an artistic way such that there is not a board of photos, but cutouts. This is how I established the Biltmore trail. There are no other copies of this photo I am aware of from this role or era, so no replacement could be used. This photo has been scanned before on other web pages that I have seen, but I own the physical copy. Again, thank you for your help!

Talk page move fixes[edit]

Milb1, could you move Talk:Hamilton Sundstrand back to Talk:UTC Aerospace Systems? I was trying to keep the correct talk page history with the correct article, and made a mistake on the dates of the discussions - they refer to the UTC Aerospace Systems article, so should remain attached to it. Both articles histories are complete messes, as someone moved Hamilton Sundstrand to UTC Aerospace Systems, and then someone else recreated the Hamilton Sundstrand page instead of reverting the move and creating a new UTC Aerospace Systems page from scratch. I think I have straightened out the info on both pages now. I don't think any hist merges are possible at this point anyway. Thanks. - BilCat (talk) 06:26, 12 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Vueling & Aer Lingus Financials[edit]

Hi Milborne,

I'm beginning to doubt myself that 1 billion of revenue is equivalent to 1,000 million! Thanks. SempreVolando (talk) 12:41, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Vueling made €1,102.6 billion in FY12 see page 13 - http://investors.vueling.com/media/9606/vueling_2012_results.pdf Also in FY11 Aer Lingus had yearly revenue of €1.239bn growing to €1.393bn in FY12 - http://www.thejournal.ie/aer-lingus-revenue-up-6pc-to-e1-28-billion-368060-Feb2012/?r_dir_d=1 Kavs8 (talk) 15:32, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Rangeblock regarding highly disruptive IP[edit]

User:The Bushranger here at this discussion referred me to you regarding a rangeblock for this IP.Antiochus the Great (talk) 11:33, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Something about the IP user is familiar; they might be a banned user. Dave might have run into them before. - BilCat (talk) 12:26, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Not an expert of rangeblocks but I think a range block is a bit severe and the articles are already protected, we might take out a big chunk of Singapore. Better in my opinion to deal with him/her as they appear and extend the protection of the articles if required. Perhaps raise it at ANI if you want somebody else to look at it. MilborneOne (talk) 15:23, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
So treat the IP and the recent socks that he has appeared to have created as blocked? Seems fair, reasonable and yes (if I understand correctly) a rangeblock may affect other editors from Singapore from editing. Suggestion, if the IP address that was most recently used 103.246.114.86 (talk+ · tag · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log · CA · CheckUser(log· investigate · cuwiki) were to be blocked and taged, then it would help in dealing with the IP in future - I.e serving as a reference point for other editors/admins that need to deal with him.Antiochus the Great (talk) 15:35, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you look further up the Jetstar Airways talk page, a move was discussed in mid-2010 and there was opposition then. Speaking for myself, I was silent on the more recent suggestion because I didn't see it, not because I agreed. Cheers YSSYguy (talk) 07:44, 18 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
OK the fact that nobody commented is normally taken as not opposed but I have moved it back so it can be discussed. MilborneOne (talk) 09:08, 18 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Image Split[edit]

No, problem. If they're copyvios, ditch them both. I should've known this right off the bat in the case of the Cat engine. Incidentally, after searching through the commons image named "Engine.JPG," I realized I may have to rename all related images there. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 17:34, 19 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Blog and AlJazeera Video of Syrian Battles[edit]

Dear MilborneoOne,

Don't worry I am not dragging you into an edit war; I have already move on to the next edit. But to get the rule clear for the future please. To wit, with all the heavy fighting in Syria and the news, I have been checking AlJazeera stories, blogs and videos. Well there is now a huge battle for a town that controls roads to northern Lebanon and Syria and Appello. On one of AJ's blogs, they had an exclusive -- this video at 1:34m -- AJ video by their people showing the battle when I saw it (it showed just a few seconds). It was the Russian made AT-4 wire guided antitank launcher being fired by the Free Syrian Army. Ok, I know blogs are no good, but what is the status of the AJ video? Inquiring minds would like to know?<GRIN> Promise, I have moved on and I am not dragging you into an edit war.

Not sure I would count it as a reliable source that one side or the other had AT-4s bit like using an image to identify operators all a a bit iffy as it means interpreting what you see, how do you know what it is, who has it, where it is etc, all down to interpretation rather than hard fact. Thank You. --Jackehammond (talk) 20:54, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation for taking a short survey about communication and efficiency of WikiProjects for my research[edit]

Hi MilborneOne, I'm working on a project to study the running of WikiProject and possible performance measures for it. I learn from WikiProject Aviation talk page that you are an active member of the project. I would like to invite you to take a short survey for my study. If you are available to take our survey, could you please reply an email to me? I'm new to Wikipedia, I can't send too many emails to other editors due to anti-spam measure. Thank you very much for your time. Xiangju (talk) 15:06, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A Snowy AFD[edit]

It is this one[14]. Maybe you would like to close it....William 10:26, 25 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

User:98.67.162.148[edit]

Michael, User:98.67.162.148 has been making non-productive changes to Boeing C-17 Globemaster III, mostly contrary to MOS, and many outright incorrect, such as changing mentions of RCAF back to Air COmmand. This IP user from Huntsville Alabama US has a history of making such edits over a wide range of IPs in the 98.series. He/she has never resoopned to multiple attempts to communicate the necessity of following the MOS, and has histrically edited ship articles in this manner. Could you look into this, and consider a block on this user? Thanks. - BilCat (talk) 17:45, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

OK I will keep an eye on it, not blockworthy yet but it may be disruptive if they come back again. MilborneOne (talk) 18:00, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I found one previous IP from the past, see here. IIRC, I wasn't involved in reverting this one's edits, but it will give uou other dexamples of their edits to look at for comparison. - BilCat (talk) 18:03, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Another snowy AFD[edit]

It is this one.[15] One editor thinks it may have been created by one of Ryan K's sockpuppets. I disagree, but just letting you know....William 11:00, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MilborneOne, I think you are right. It was me who added that strange intro, trying to stop people from adding the "fact" that Visser is dead while the police haven't confirmed this yet. At the top op the article, where everyone who wanted to change "is" into "was" could see it. But I guess it wasn't good thinking. Have a nice day, Caudex Rax (talk) 10:08, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Optical Express[edit]

Hi, there are some recent edits by COI editors directly on Optical Express page. I have posted a comment on the Optical Express Talk Page and would be grateful if you could review when you get a spare moment. Thanks. Hardlygone (talk) 10:40, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Argh! not looked at it for a while, changes have been reverted but I will keep an eye on it. May need to look at some of the suggestions on the talk page by User:RingARoses who might take no replies as consensus to re-add the material! MilborneOne (talk) 19:40, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
