Information icon Hello, I'm Nagol0929. I wanted to let you know that one or more of your recent contributions to Hannam University have been undone because they appeared to be promotional. Advertising and using Wikipedia as a "soapbox" are against Wikipedia policy and not permitted; Wikipedia articles should be written objectively, using independent sources, and from a neutral perspective. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about Wikipedia. Thank you. Nagol0929 (talk) 12:38, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Nagol0929,
I hope this email finds you well. My name is Minera1water, and I am writing to you in my capacity as an alumnus of Hannam University, specifically from the English Education department. I am currently dedicated to teaching English at a junior high school here in Daejeon, Korea. My connection to Hannam University and my current role in the education sector have inspired me to reach out to you today.
Upon reviewing the Wikipedia page for Hannam University, I noticed that some of the information appears to be outdated. For instance, the page still mentions the night colleges, which, to my knowledge, were discontinued about 20 years ago. This is just one example of several discrepancies that may not reflect the current state and achievements of our esteemed university.
Given my background and my commitment to the institution's legacy, I am keen to offer my assistance in updating the Wikipedia page. My aim is to ensure that the page accurately represents the university's current programs, achievements, and contributions to the academic community. To this end, I have gathered information from the most recent English brochure issued by the university, as well as from the official homepage, to use as references for the updates.
I believe that an accurate and up-to-date Wikipedia page is crucial for prospective students, researchers, and the global academic community to have a clear understanding of Hannam University's offerings and its esteemed position in the educational landscape.
Before proceeding, I wanted to introduce myself and express my intentions, hoping to collaborate with you to ensure the accuracy of the information. I am more than willing to discuss this further and provide the information I have collected for your review.
Please let me know if there are any specific protocols or permissions required to make these updates or if there is someone else I should contact regarding this matter. I am looking forward to your guidance and hoping for the opportunity to contribute positively to our university's representation on a global platform.
Thank you very much for your time and consideration. I am eagerly awaiting your response.
Warm regards,
Minera1water Minera1water (talk) 01:35, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You can't copy text from the university's website into Wikipedia, both because of copyright-related reasons and because it's not written from a neutral point of view. That's what the multiple notices on this talk page were about. DanCherek (talk) 01:46, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the reminder. what about general facts, for examplet the college information? I did want to update the the night college which doens't exist anymore but I could not. Minera1water (talk) 04:31, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Anything you add to Wikipedia needs to be summarized in your own words. I sometimes find it helpful to read the source material, then try to summarize it without directly referring to it (of course you can look at it afterwards, but this might help avoid the temptation of using the same or substantially similar phrasing). If you would like to see an example of the kind of sourcing that should be used in a college/university-related article, feel free to refer to Pomona College, which another editor recently brought to featured article status, meaning it was reviewed and determined to be a high-quality article. Also, please stick to objective and neutrally written statements; the purpose of the Hannam University article is not to write glowingly about every single achievement. In fact, at this point, it would probably be best for you to gain some editing experience in other topic areas that you don't have a connection to.
The purpose of the current block on your account is to prevent further copyright violations, so if you confirm that you understand our copyright policy and commit to following policies/guidelines going forward, I will unblock your account. DanCherek (talk) 22:48, 2 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I understand the importance of adhering to Wikipedia's guidelines and policies, and I assure you that I am committed to upholding these standards in all my contributions. If there have been any inadvertent violations or misunderstandings that led to the account block, I sincerely apologize.
Could you please review my account status and consider unblocking it so that I can continue to update and contribute to Wikipedia pages? I am eager to resume my editing activities and assist in maintaining the integrity and quality of information on the platform.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. Minera1water (talk) 14:44, 7 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No, if your only purpose on Wikipedia is to add promotional and copyrighted material to Hannam University, then you will not be unblocked to edit about it. There re 6,000,000 other articles you can edit instead, if your purpose is to help build this encyclopedia. -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 15:28, 7 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I mean that if I successfully finish updating this page I think I can also update for some of 6,000,000 other articles, for instance universities in Korea. Minera1water (talk) 13:40, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia and copyright[edit]

Control copyright icon Hello Minera1water! Your additions to Hannam University have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source. You must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. Read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably free and compatible copyright license. Please see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices. Our policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, please ask them here on this page, or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you. DanCherek (talk) 22:54, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Minera1water. The nature of your edits, such as the one you made to Hannam University, gives the impression you have an undisclosed financial stake in promoting a topic, but you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. Paid advocacy is a category of conflict of interest (COI) editing that involves being compensated by a person, group, company or organization to use Wikipedia to promote their interests. Undisclosed paid advocacy is prohibited by our policies on neutral point of view and what Wikipedia is not, and is an especially serious type of COI; the Wikimedia Foundation regards it as a "black hat" practice akin to black-hat search-engine optimization.

Paid advocates are strongly discouraged from direct article editing, and should instead propose changes on the talk page of the article in question if an article exists. If the article does not exist, paid advocates are strongly discouraged from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly.

Regardless, if you are receiving or expect to receive compensation for your edits, broadly construed, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:Minera1water. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=Minera1water|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}. If I am mistaken – you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits – please state that in response to this message. Otherwise, please provide the required disclosure. In either case, do not edit further until you answer this message. -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 15:30, 7 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
