Thanks for letting me know -- this is my first time editing Wikipedia (as you could probably tell from the poorly formatted references!). I recently read this page and felt that the "militarily unnecessary section" could be expanded. It seemed to me that the section as I found it relied on the testimony of sources like Eisenhower, MacArthur, Nimitz, etc. without really explaining how they arrived at the conclusions they did. The material I posted was meant to represent the argument that the Japanese were close to surrender and were in the process of negotiating peace through the Soviets when the bombs were dropped. I also wanted to add the important detail that the invasion of Japan was scheduled for November 1, 1945, which means that Truman could have waited to drop the bombs until October. I also felt that mentioning the Franck Report was important, which suggests that whatever strategic purpose the bombs achieved could have been achieved through a desert island demonstration, sparing the lives of civilians.
