Extended file attributes in BeOS[edit]

Hi. You are 100% correct that the Extended file attributes article should discuss BeOS. The problem is we haven't had anyone editing that article who knows enough about BeOS.

I vaguely recall that BeOS had/has a styled text format in which the file data was plain text and the style info was in an extended attribute. If I'm remembering correctly, that is a very interesting use of attributes which should be mentioned in the article.

So if you know enough to write something about BeOS for that article, please go for it. (Don't worry if you're not sure about formatting, style rules etc — someone else can always fix that sort of thing.) URLs for articles, manuals etc about BeOS extended attributes would be really helpful, too, if you have some.

Best wishes, CWC 21:58, 23 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed, BeOS used xattrs in many places, including Styled text, with an attribute to store serialized font_runs. I'll try to find some time to add it on the page.
