ArbCom 2020 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2020 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 7 December 2020. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2020 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 02:53, 24 November 2020 (UTC)

Copyright On deleted page World Cities Day

Hi, I had my draft deleted due to copyright issues however, I did resolve these and an email was also sent to wikipedia.org providing the relevant permission to showcase the information as instructed to do. I reached out to the organisation and got the relevant permission. Please assist Sarah UN17 (talk) 08:04, 23 November 2020 (UTC)

Sarah UN17, Hello. An email has been received relating to Draft:World Cities Day, but it was not specific enough for me to confirm copyright permission for that page. When sufficient information is provided to confirm that the page is freely licensed, it will be restored. Unfortunately, there is a backlog of unhandled permission emails, so it took longer than expected for this process to begin. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 16:47, 23 November 2020 (UTC) (talk page watcher)
AntiCompositeNumber, thank you for your assistance. This is made clear now and I hope the relevant permission is granted. Sarah UN17 (talk) 07:21, 25 November 2020 (UTC)

AfD quotes

Hey. I saw that you closed the cunard quotes copyright thread, but I'm unclear on the outcome. In case it wasn't clear, including a pile of quotes is cunard's standard AfD contribution. I think people are looking for an answer as to whether or not it's acceptable practice more than weighing in on those quotes in particular. FWIW. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 11:03, 24 November 2020 (UTC)

Rhododendrites, I added a further explanation; "my personal opinion is that it's not a serious breach of copyright, and using quotes to illustrate an argument is fine, but in the future I recommend @Cunard: to use smaller excerpts and/or less quotes at afd." Moneytrees🏝️Talk🌴Help out at CCI! 17:17, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
Thanks. This seems like it would have some nontrivial implications for use of quotes on talk pages/projectspace in general (which, by the letter of WP:NFCC isn't allowed to begin with, which is fun :) ). Guidance about NFC stuff regarding text is pretty limited and open to interpretation (in terms of copyright, it doesn't seem all that controversial as to whether or not it fits the [US] definition of fair use, but the Wikipedia policy end of things is less clear, as others have pointed out). E.g. is the size of the quote that Cunard uses unacceptable? Is it the location/purpose of the quotes? If one or the other or the combination of the two results in a violation of NFC, wouldn't there be an exigency to go back, remove them, and even revdel (not to mention the various other people who have included lots of quotes at AfD and the many RfCs that include quotes from many sources to ask whether certain material should be included)? If it's not an NFCC violation, then isn't it a de facto sanction against Cunard? If so, that seems like it should be articulated as such. This is all messy business, I know. I'm mainly just trying to convince you that this is too big of an issue for a short closing statement, and that we need a call as to whether this is [effectively] NFCC case law, a user-level sanction, or just a recommendation. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 19:17, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
Rereading this today, I think I may have misread at first pass. It does look like you made clear that it was not a violation of copyright (NFCC implied?) and that it's a recommendation rather than a sanction. So, y'know, nevermind. :) — Rhododendrites talk \\ 14:15, 25 November 2020 (UTC)
Rhododendrites, Sorry, I was a bit busy for a good answer (Thanksgiving and Covid and all), my position is that it's not a serious revdelable (is that a word?) violation of copyright but that further use of several, excessive quotes should be avoided. I don't believe I can (and currently don't want to) put a formal sanction on Cunard as an admin action, and would rather my colsing be taken as a notice/recommendation, or a warning if that's necessary; if this continues, tell me. Context matters for this sort of stuff, one large quote as evidence in a projectspace debate is ok but several excessive ones used for an argument or a mainspace article being mostly comprised of large quotes isn't. It's administrative tradition not to revdel overquotes, I don't really know why, and admin opinions on what and how far to revdel on general also vary, so yeah it's a whole mess. This kind of area of revdels and copyright has always been a sort of grey area, I think I've said before but a RfC should be opened on the matter because there's no real formal consensus on what is what. Moneytrees🏝️Talk🌴Help out at CCI! 15:19, 25 November 2020 (UTC)
Got it. Thanks for further clarifying. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 16:05, 25 November 2020 (UTC)

Hi Moneytrees. Thank you for closing Wikipedia:Copyright problems/2020 November 19. Rhododendrites (talk · contribs), thank you for starting this talk page discussion. My aim in quoting an excerpt from each source is to show at AfD why and how each source in my opinion provides significant coverage of the subject to establish notability. Moneytrees, you wrote, "further use of several, excessive quotes should be avoided". Using the examples discussed here and here, would you provide more details about which quotes you consider excessive so I can better understand how much I can quote in the future? Thanks, Cunard (talk) 11:41, 28 November 2020 (UTC)

Cunard, I would try only quoting from articles when it illustrates a point that would be difficult to use otherwise; if you were to quote something a paragraph or two would be the most for a single source. I would also avoid quoting several sources, just a few sentences from each if you must. Moneytrees🏝️Talk🌴Help out at CCI! 04:04, 30 November 2020 (UTC)

TheMandalorian.jpg

Hi! I'm looking for some help. I want to put this file in the article for Mandalorian under the sections Appearances-Television-The Mandalorian. This page only has 1 image, and it's a cosplay. I want to add this image, but it's fair use and the file page said that the image was to be used on one page (Din Djarin). Am I allowed to add this? Here is the link: Details page. Dswitz10734 (talk) 17:54, 28 November 2020 (UTC)

Dswitz10734, I would say no, sorry. You should be able to use an image of a generic un named character like at Stormtrooper (Star Wars) though. Moneytrees🏝️Talk🌴Help out at CCI! 04:26, 30 November 2020 (UTC)

Fair Use

Hi! I was looking for some help. I want to use the cover of a book for an existing article called Star Wars: Battlefront II: Inferno Squad. I don't want to make an infringement of copyright, so that's why I'm looking for advice. The link is here. It's an image on Flickr. Could you please help me figure out if I can use this or not? Dswitz10734 (talk) 15:28, 1 December 2020 (UTC)

If you lower the resolution and add {{Non-free book cover|image has rationale=yes}} on the page, it might fall under fair use. I'll wait for @Moneytrees: opinion through. Signed,The4lines |||| (You Asked?) (What I have Done.) 16:01, 1 December 2020 (UTC)
Dswitz10734, What 4L said- tag the image with the template he mentioned and :{{non-free reduce}}, which'll get a bot to downsize it. Moneytrees🏝️Talk🌴Help out at CCI! 18:36, 1 December 2020 (UTC)
@Moneytrees and The4lines, thank you for your advice. I have uploaded the image here. Thanks again and have a great day! Dswitz10734 (talk) 20:33, 1 December 2020 (UTC)

Name Space

I don't get any warnings, then don't block me and other fact is that Iam used this for sandbox Eldhose Talk 19:43, 7 December 2020 (UTC)

Eldhorajan92, Due to recent instances where users with several edits were blocked for copyright violations after several warnings, I've decided to be a lot stricter with copyright blocks. Starting with users listed at CCI, I'm blocking users with several warnings, such as yourself. If you want to appeal your block, you must demonstrate understanding of copyright. No previous warning nor any proof of violating wikipedia rules...enlighten me this is new.ꯂꯨꯋꯥꯡ (ꯆꯥ) 20:30, 7 December 2020 (UTC)

Luwanglinux, I count 1, 2, 3, 4 warnings on your talkpage. Your edits will now be checked at Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations/Luwanglinux. Moneytrees🏝️Talk🌴Help out at CCI! 20:53, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
Ok but I have not made any copyright violation edit or without talk page discussion or edit summary ever since an admin taught me the procedure.ꯂꯨꯋꯥꯡ (ꯆꯥ) 21:09, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
also those warning by Chunnu Bhai are made not for repeated violation but the user searched my past edit and reported it.I mean those edit were made before the time I was unknown of copyright violation fully now I know the rule and I did not break that rule ever since Dianna told me...Thank you and please be kindꯂꯨꯋꯥꯡ (ꯆꯥ) 21:17, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
I never expect this punishment(indefinite block) and I thought the warning from October(copyright violation) was enough as far as I am concerned I never try to violate copyright when editing after that warning by Dianna(an admin). This indefinite block made my heart heavy and it feels too unfair to me as I am receiving punishment for something which I do not repeat(repeated copyright violation).I accept the punishment although I think its a bit too severe(indefinite block).lastly when I checked the link of my contributions some were marked with N and some were marked red cross. Can you help me know what those mean?...sincerelyꯂꯨꯋꯥꯡ (ꯆꯥ) 11:34, 8 December 2020 (UTC)

Hello Moneytrees, I wonder how you would classify this edit. "Chindwin River" and "Ningthee River" are just names, and at best evidence might be needed to show that those names are indeed used in the source. An elaborate quotation is not required for anything. Would you say that this is not a fair use of copyrighted content? (Ignoring, for the moment, the fact that the source may not be under copyright protection any more.) -- Kautilya3 (talk) 22:55, 7 December 2020 (UTC)

Hello Kautilya3 what are you trying to say? are you saying giving reference with a quote is copyright infringement?...dude your personal attack is way too much.05:10, 8 December 2020 (UTC)

World Cities Day

Hi, I wanted to kindly inquire why the World Cities Day page was not moved to article space after the copyright permission was provided? Please assist in guiding for the next steps as it was rejected initially based on the copyright issue. Thanks so much for the help Sarah UN17 (talk) 11:53, 10 December 2020 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) Hi, Sarah UN17. I apologise for the delay. Copyright's one of the busier areas of Wikipedia, and there are too few people working on it. We're all volunteers (in every part of Wikipedia - not only copyright), and some of us work or have school as well. I'm unable to help you as I'm not an administrator; please be patient for a little while longer. Thanks, BlackcurrantTea (talk) 18:21, 12 December 2020 (UTC)
Sarah UN17, Sorry for a bit of a delay; now that the page is no longer blanked articles for creation reviewers are far more likely to review it and give feedback. Since I've been involved in cleaning the article up I'll let another give a more in depth review of it; I'd recommend removing the primary sources used and replace them with secondary sources if you can. Moneytrees🏝️Talk🌴Help out at CCI! 22:13, 13 December 2020 (UTC)

Thank you for all the help, I will be sure to look out for the review. I did add a few sources that are secondary such as reliable news articles and non-affiliated organisations, I will aim to add a few more secondary thank you Sarah UN17 (talk) 09:29, 14 December 2020 (UTC)

Good morning! Can you do me a favor and revert the page back to the original content, and delete the new NSGA Hawaii? Not exactly sure where the 'copyright' was an issue. I will move the original page to "NSGA Hawaii". Thanks! It's me...Sallicio! 16:44, 15 December 2020 (UTC)

Sallicio, Moved. I'm pretty sure the wordpress article is a mirror of our article since the content existed here before that article was written, so I'll unblank it. Moneytrees🏝️Talk🌴Help out at CCI! 17:49, 15 December 2020 (UTC)
It appears that another editor copy and pasted it. The site from which it came is not a "dot gov" site, so it is not in the PD. I was just cleaning it up, because it was originally written as a mess. Then I noticed that NSGA Kunia didn't even exist anymore as such, and was combined with another command. I will change the obvious copyvio stuff so it complies with WP policy. Thanks for your help! Merry Christmas! It's me...Sallicio! 18:09, 15 December 2020 (UTC).
Also, just FYI, I'm gonna have to move the page again. Apparently, it's not called "NSGA Hawaii" anymore. To the best I can understand from the text of the resource, it is currently called "Navy Information Operations Command" (this place changes names more often than I change underwear...). It's me...Sallicio! 19:22, 15 December 2020 (UTC)

Requesting updating of Women related laws in Pakistan with new text

Greetings,

As per Wikipedia's expected due process I have updated Talk:Women related laws in Pakistan/Temp building it from scratch with proper close paraphrasing. I suppose it would be acceptable at least as a stub.

Since updating of Talk:Women related laws in Pakistan/Temp we will not be depending on previous text of the article, I requesting to shift the text from Talk:Women related laws in Pakistan/Temp to Women related laws in Pakistan.

Thanks and warm regards

Hi, I was wondering if you possibly had the time to adopt me. I am patient, skilled, and open to suggestions. I have made some mistakes in the past, but if you look past that, you'll see I always assume good faith, and am kind. Please consider, and get back to me when you can. Thanks! BlackWidowMovie0 (talk) 01:03, 17 December 2020 (UTC)

BlackWidowMovie0, I'm not the adopter kind, sorry- I don't think I'd be able to do much and my expertise is limited to a large but obscure area. I would recommend finding someone on Wikipedia:Adopt-a-user/Adoptee's Area/Adopters to take you in, although above that I'd recommend just not editing for now- as someone who also made mistakes in the past, I found leaving for a while (as in several months) and coming back with a greater understanding of what I wanted to do here was better. CCI

I thought I'd take up your plea to work on some CCI.

This one, Songdo Convensia has me flummoxed.

While the edit that triggered the inquiry seems okay, while checking it out I ran across this site which is exactly the same as the article's opening paragraph.

However, the edits to the article were added in 2011, while the matching site has a copyright date of 2013. The article appears to have references but those don't go to the original material.

I also see the same text at this site with an unhelpful copyright date range of 2005 – 2020.

I checked both sites in the Internet archive and do not find anything helpful.

I suppose it's possible that both of those sites copied material from Wikipedia. They obviously both didn't independently come up with the same text but I'm unfamiliar with news world so don't know whether it's likely or unlikely that they would scrape material from Wikipedia.

Any thoughts?--S Philbrick(Talk) 13:43, 19 December 2020 (UTC)

Sphilbrick, The first one has a date near the top that says "03(Wed), Jul, 2019"; looking at the articles history the text wasn't inserted around then so it copied from us. The second one looks like one of those several cheap travel guide type sites, and those always copy from us and never attribute so it's most likely a mirror. Moneytrees🏝️Talk🌴Help out at CCI! 17:02, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
Moneytrees, OK thanks. Very odd that someone would have a 2013 copyright date on a 2019 article, but I should have looked closer. S Philbrick(Talk) 20:22, 19 December 2020 (UTC)

Hey Moneytrees, I've just knocked over the tail end of Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations/ScreamingDuck, if you wouldn't mind closing it off? I'm hoping to finish the fleet of ships in the next week or so as well. Cheers, --Jack Frost (talk) 07:41, 20 December 2020 (UTC)

CCI help request

Despite having used the Internet archive extensively as part of CCI review I've had a couple stumbles recently. Little under the weather and maybe not thinking clearly, hoping I'm missing something simple but maybe you can point it out.

Here's the diff: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?diff=662890210

A straightforward addition of a plot . When I put the diff ID into the Internet archive: https://copyvios.toolforge.org/?lang=en&project=wikipedia&title=&oldid=662890210&action=search&use_engine=1&use_links=1&turnitin=0

I get a lot of overlap, but the overlap seems to have nothing to do with the specific diff. What am I missing?--S Philbrick(Talk) 19:20, 28 December 2020 (UTC)
