June 2018[edit]

Please stop adding inappropriate external links to Wikipedia, as you did to Overlanding. It is considered spamming and Wikipedia is not a vehicle for advertising or promotion. Because Wikipedia uses nofollow tags, additions of links to Wikipedia will not alter search engine rankings. If you continue spamming, you may be blocked from editing Wikipedia. A note about being part of this community[edit]

Hi, welcome, and thanks for contributing to motorcycling articles. This is an area I've been passionate about for over 10 years here, so please call on me if you need pointers. I'd like to start by inviting you to have a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Motorcycling which is our hangout for all motorized two- and three-wheeled topics. The talkpage there (Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Motorcycling) is a great place to bounce ideas or ask other people to lend a hand with something.

Since you're new I'd like to just say that this can be a heated environment at times but the most important thing to remember, more than all the technical guidelines that will get thrown at you when you take a misstep, is Assume Good Faith (often abbreviated AGF). Keep in mind that other editors are trying to build something great, and have their own – sometimes passionate – opinions, and things will go a lot better.

One more thing, and I'm guilty of this sometimes: we get lots of attempted advertising or non-monetary promotion here, especially around people's favorite clubs and silly things like that. The *ahem* more senior editors are sometimes suspicious of new folks who come and add links maybe they haven't seen before, or maybe they have before from people who turned out not to be here to build an encyclopedia. If you're here to build an encyclopedia, which I assume you are, just try not to return fire, engage politely, and eventually people will turn on their own AGF filters and become more inviting.

Cheers and see you around ☆ Bri (talk) 20:27, 20 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

One more thing about editing related to employment or other connections outside of Wikipedia[edit]

I just noticed in your note at the Teahouse that you say you're involved in the industry. Details aren't important here, I'll just point out you should read WP:COI carefully and if you do one thing, please don't introduce links directly to your employer's website. This can start to escalate and I've seen it go sideways really quickly even for people who thought they were being helpful. You are strongly encouraged to bring up such things on an article talkpage – or the motorcycling talkpage I listed above – and wait for a neutral editor to evaluate and make the change if they think it is truly helpful. It can take some more time but in the long run, it's worth the wait. ☆ Bri (talk) 20:38, 20 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Bri! Thanks for your extra thoughts on this and illuminating some points I wasn't aware of in a manner I can understand which is also non-threatening or judgmental. I never thought about bringing it up on the Talk page and had no idea that was one of it's functions. You're clearly right though, in such a case it makes more sense to have another person vet the idea and let them post it up if deemed relevant. Cheers to you mate. I hope we have a chance to have one around a campfire down the road.--MotoLoco76 (talk) 21:08, 20 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
