Advice[edit]

Here is some advice for faculty that assign their students to Wikipedia projects:

The single most important step is the selection of topics that allow students to contribute new content. The instructor should make sure that good general sources exist on the assigned topics, preferably reviews and textbooks. A major part of the learning experience comes from students re-describing or summarizing what they read from these broad sources.
Students should be graded on the quality of their content, not the quantity.
Peer review (by fellow students) is a joke.
Steer away from toxicity, environmental, or safety aspects. Tons of content on such topics are readily Google-able. Students learn little from parroting this material and are poor judges of quality sources.
Editors at Wikipedia are not babysitters or graders for your class and we often just remove all the student content once the class is over (because it is so awful or so specialized). Instructors could expect good cooperation from established editors, but it is quid pro quo. The way to communicate is on the talk pages of the articles. Thanks for your contributions on CCS[edit]

Hi Mswent. I'm a volunteer editor who is currently working on the Sustainable energy article. This morning, someone added a link to CCS and climate change mitigation to the Climate change mitigation page. The CCS and climate change mitigation is so well written! Thank you for bringing your students to Wikipedia. They have made some impressive contributions.

At WP:WikiProject climate change, we are just starting to try to organize work around climate change content. There are very, very few contributors working in this area, especially on mitigation issues. If you would like to join the project and join in the conversation, that would be wonderful. If you are thinking of doing Wikipedia assignments again in the future, we'd be happy to discuss ideas in terms of where our articles need the most attention, and how to give their work the most readership.
