Diabatic and adiabatic state functions[edit]

Hello! I have a question for you regarding adiabatic and diabatic states in quantum mechanics. Would you happen to know the origin of these names? Why are adiabatic states called "adiabatic"? Was the terminology borrowed from thermodynamics, and if so, why was it chosen? Thanks for your help!

Oh yes, by the way, you may be interested in this project: Wikipedia:Scientific peer review - it is a farily new collaboration on Wikipedia, but you might find your expertise very useful there. I have not taken a look at it myself yet, but you are more than welcome to browse through the dialogs. There is also the less serious Wikipedia:Reference desk - occasionally, you may find some questions which might interest you there. Cheers! --HappyCamper 00:28, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
