Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Battlecrylogo.gif[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Battlecrylogo.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 05:41, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nagle's Algothirm Edit & Findings[edit]

I am becoming increasingly concerned. The Nagle's algothrithm isnt actually listed in the patch notes for WoW despite edits to both the WoW Wiki and Wikipedia (using the wiki itself as a reference. Can you confirm that you are not involved in this 'prank' and that the algorithm is actually notable enough to be listed. At the moment it looks like blatant self-promotion. 21:11, 9 January 2008 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Philipwhiuk (talkcontribs)

I have no idea what this is about. Are you concerned that some game or game site is promoting itself on Wikipedia, or what? It's not unusual for games to turn off the Nagle algorithm in TCP, though, in an attempt to cut lag. Network overhead goes up, and lag goes down. I try not to edit that article unless it's factually wrong. You can add references if you like; the algorithm is in the standard textbooks on TCP. --John Nagle (talk) 23:21, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wikia Annex is a conflict of interest[edit]

I am sort of astounded that so many Wikipedians would defend the Wikia Annex, even if it meant only a 5% threat of the IRS shutting down the 501(c)3 status of the Foundation. This investigative piece may interest you, if you haven't already discovered it. - John Russ Finley (talk) 17:25, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

John, I wanted to talk with you about your recent (last week's worth) edits to the Jewish lobby article.

I have two concerns.

One, you're edit warring, and you need to back off that and use the talk page more. You know the rules on this, and I'd appreciate it if you just try to stick to them rather than get yourself in trouble fighting over stuff in article space.

Two, you seem to be consistently talking right past what Jay and Armon are saying on the talk page. The difference between a source documenting usage of a term, and a source documenting significance and definition of a term are two very different things. Anyone can run a google search and find a large number of instances of usage of the term. I don't think anyone doubts or disputes that. Those are factual and real. But those also don't help us define the term, put it into context, describe why it matters and is encyclopedic and so forth.

A linguist, or social or politics commentator, could do an opinion or linguistics research article on the term based on that sort of google search. That independent referencable writeup would then be a source which Wikipedia could use. But doing that directly as part of the Wikipedia article itself is a violation of WP:NOR as Jay and Armon are pointing out to you.

I'm assuming good faith in this, but there's clearly a problem here. I would appreciate it if you could address the specific issue of original research in the article and sources selection, etc. Preferably on the article talk page, so that everyone can join in appropriately and find some common ground for agreement.

Thank you. Georgewilliamherbert (talk) 00:13, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ah. But the article isn't about the term as an linguistic abstraction. That's what Wictionary is for. It's about the Jewish lobby, which, from the evidence, exists. --John Nagle (talk) 01:01, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I saw your note about the Dr Drakken account. Their initial edits from Dec 30 appear new-user-ish, but I see why you're suspicious. I'll take a closer look this afternoon. Georgewilliamherbert (talk) 21:19, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Spivey Records[edit]

Hi, John Nagle. I'm sorry you think the Spivey Records article is written like an advertisement. I was attempting to make the entry comprehensive, and was one album away from completion, when you slapped your "advertisement" warning on it. A terrible shock for me, which I have not recovered from. My interest in this article was simply that I used to collect Spivey Records and thought it was an interesting, little-known blues label. When I saw your suggestion that the article be merged with Victoria Spivey, I thought I would respond by making the article interesting and list the albums. I thought I had improved the text, which previously contained some howlers about Bob Dylan's recording career, but clearly you are not impressed. I did try to explain what I was doing on the Spivey talk page, where we were encouraged to post our views on the issue of to merge or not to merge. [[1]] Perhaps we could communicate on that Talk page. pax vobiscum Mick gold (talk) 18:08, 16 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Revert limitation[edit]

Based on my investigation of a complaint at WP:AE, I am applying the general sanctions enacted at Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Palestine-Israel articles as follows:

  • You are placed on revert limitation. You are limited to one revert per week per page on all pages related to the conflict area, excepting obvious vandalism, subject to a 24 hour block per violation. Reverts must be discussed on the talk page. Mischaracterization of content disputes as "vandalism" will double the block. This restriction expires in 30 days (22 February 2008, 00:00 UTC) unless extended. Thatcher 01:58, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image:The Collection.jpg and Image:The Collection (Ugly Kid Joe Album).jpg[edit]

Hi there.

I honestly didn't realise that there was already an image there. I wonder why I didn't get any obvious warnings? Oh well.

I've reverted Image:The Collection.jpg to the original, uploaded the Ugly Kid Joe one to Image:The Collection (Ugly Kid Joe Album).jpg, and modified the Ugly Kid Joe article to use the correct image. I hope that's okay? -- JediLofty User ¦ Talk 10:04, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That works. I linked the original image from the Amy Grant album, and fixed the "no free use" issue. That should finish the job. --John Nagle (talk) 15:50, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Spivey Records, part 4[edit]

John Nagle, Eight days ago I responded to concerns your had raised regarding Spivey Records on the appropriate Talk page [4]. I have indicated on your Talk page that I would like to discuss these questions with you. I would like to rescind the “Advertisement” template, and the WP:MERGE template. Perhaps you could reply to my posting? I am surprised you have not yet replied, because you clearly take your contributions as a Wikipedia editor seriously. By not responding to constructive engagement with issues that you have raised, you may (inadvertently) give the impression that you treat Wikipedia as a private fiefdom, and regard other editors’ points of view with disdain. Mick gold (talk) 09:11, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

User:Clevelander[edit]

That was my old username. Apparently, someone hacked into that account and is now using it. I did not make any of those contributions listed except for the Rasul Guliyev‎ contrib and the personal attack noticeboard thing which should have been moved to my new username but apparently weren't. Again, I did not do any of those new contributions from 2008. -- Aivazovsky (talk) 11:37, 4 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, I don't think anybody hacked into my account. It looks as though somebody just registered under the name "Clevelander" and since that name wasn't being used anymore, it was just accepted. Somebody should tell this new user to change his/her user name to avoid any further confusion. In any case, something still needs to be done and I'm not sure how to handle it. -- Aivazovsky (talk) 17:14, 4 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Stopbadwarelogo.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Stopbadwarelogo.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 18:08, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Planetstoriesclichecover.jpg[edit]

Thank you for uploading Image:Planetstoriesclichecover.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 14:08, 8 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

CAMERA[edit]

Hey,

Was hoping you could provide some feedback about an introduction for the CAMERA article on the talk page.

Thanks, --68.23.8.245 (talk) 07:25, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Heya Nagle.

I would first like to apologise on behalf of the Mediation Committee for the delay in this case being dealt with, which is due to a shortage of available mediators. I have expressed interest in taking this case to help with the backlog and to assess my nomination to join the committee. As i am not currently a member it is common practice to for the involved parties to consent to mediation of an RfM from a non-committee member. To give your consent for me to act as mediator for this case please sign as you have for the acceptance of the case on the case page. I look forward to working with you and finding a solution to the dispute.
