Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3

The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor
As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! An Esperanzial May to all of the readership!

  3. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct.
  4. Referendums are to be held on whether terms of AC members should be lengthened and whether we should abolish votes full stop.
  5. Admin Coaching reform is agreed upon.

Good Work.

Hi, Naconkantari, I want to award you barn-star because you're very good wikipedian even better than other Administrators(Wikipedian). ^.^. You always catch the vandalism, and also protect other owner's room. That means You protect the article from vandals. So, Thanks. Please Send me message. Ahh, I know that you are involved in AmiDaniel's vandal proof.

Complaint

I recently correct a mistake on the page Nigger and was almost banned for it by you. But what you dfail to realise is that the word "Chigger" comes from the words "nigger" and "chinky," not "chinese".

Sorry about that, feel free to re-add the information. Naconkantari e|t||c|m 20:14, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

For the record, PlagueRat did not actually remove any warnings from his talk page. Not that I could see, anyway. As for the rest of his edits... I have no idea if he's even worth arguing with, or if he's just a troll, but I'm giving it a try. DS 18:32, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Claim - reverted edits

Dear Naconkantari,

why did you reverted edits I made ie. on the page about Nissan ? I added an external link to a non-commercial club of Nissan cars enthusiasts (*NissanClub.cz International Nissan cars club). This website and few other car club websites I develop several years as my hobby and it is not any kind of commercial project. Does I have to understand your act as a demonstration of your power ? You are an administrator, so you can do anythink ? Some stupid guy added link, you'll delete it ? Please explain me your reason.

Best regards, Pavel

The external link guidelines states that you may not add links to commercial sites or sites that you own. Naconkantari e|t||c|m 12:29, 15 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unblocking

Is that thing still triggering off those autoblocks? Do we have another alternative other than removing those blocks manually? --HappyCamper 02:50, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The only option that I can think of is having a developer change his password manually. Other than that, I just don't know. If he's unblocked, that means more vandalism, but while he's blocked, that means AOL denial of service. I'll see what I can do. Naconkantari e|t||c|m 02:57, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I removed a bunch of these blocks earlier today, but it seems rather silly if this is going to be ongoing...I was thinking of this...apparently, the user has not made any contributions to Wikipedia. Why not unblock the account for say, 10 seconds, and see what sorts of edits the account is attempting to do? After that, we can block it again. If we are lucky, perhaps it will only target one page, and if we protect the page, the bot might not be smart enough to switch to another to do the vandalism. Perhaps wishful thinking, but might be better than having to clear these blocks every minute or so. What do you think? --HappyCamper 03:05, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It's amazing how fast it can get autoblocked. I finally managed to expire the block and the bot hasn't made any contributions. It appears that all it does is attempt to load the edit page, gets blocked, and then goes for another random page, switching IP addresses at every different page. I'll keep watch on it for a while longer and see if anything changes. Naconkantari e|t||c|m 03:19, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
For all those little things! --HC
You, my friend, deserve a barnstar. Thanks for keeping a sharp eye on these things. As for me, I actually thought the blocks might go to infinity... --HappyCamper 03:27, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Recent "bot" block

Hi, this is 209.236.231.253. I recently updated {{welcomeip}} so that it would substitute {{PAGENAME}} each time it was subst'ed, by using <includeonly> tags. Obviously, this would mess up any existing template transclusions; hence my recent subst'ing. I'm not a bot, I was just going down Special:Whatlinkshere rapidly :) 207.150.184.42 03:55, 18 May 2006 (UTC) (by the way, this IP is an open proxy, you may wish to block it)[reply]

Err... sorry.

Yesterday I see someone repeatedly edited the "Misère game" article to include a giant sci-fi story, and I can't help but think that it's partly my fault. See, back in March, I stumbled across that story in the page's history when I was reverting vandalism from a different user, then recently I decided that it might be appreciated by the rest of the general internet, so I posted the story of how I found it and a link to the history page on this topic on Newgrounds. I guess I should have expected that someone would do something stupid like this, but in my defence, I thought that the whole idea of the story thing was really really funny. Anyway, sorry about that, and thanks for fixing up the vandalism. --Elfer 14:17, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

VandalProof 1.2 Now Available

After a lenghty, but much-needed Wikibreak, I'm happy to announce that version 1.2 of VandalProof is now available for download! Beyond fixing some of the most obnoxious bugs, like the persistent crash on start-up that many have experienced, version 1.2 also offers a wide variety of new features, including a stub-sorter, a global user whitelist and blacklist, navigational controls, and greater customization. You can find a full list of the new features here. While I believe this release to be a significant improvement over the last, it's nonetheless nowhere near the end of the line for VandalProof. Thanks to Rob Church, I now have an account on test.wikipedia.org with SysOp rights and have already been hard at work incorporating administrative tools into VandalProof, which I plan to make available in the near future. An example of one such SysOp tool that I'm working on incorporating is my simple history merge tool, which simplifies the process of performing history merges from one article into another. Anyway, if you haven't already, I'd encourage you to download and install version 1.2 and take it out for a test-drive. As always, your suggestions for improvement are always appreciated, and I hope that you will find this new version useful. Happy editing! --AmiDaniel (talk) 02:57, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Redirect Deletion

Hello,

I think you deleted a redirect I created from "Matt Albert" to my user page. I think (probably wrongly) that that redirect is covered under Alternate Names... (?) It's mainly there for a few friends who wanted to look up my name in wikipedia, but I'm still not too sure that that re-direct qualified for deletion.

Hello

Hi, I have a quick question for you. I notice that you are the person who checked the open proxies that I had suggested. Do you scan all the ports or do you just scan 80, 8080 and 3128 or other common ports used for ghost machines? I had noticed that all the IP addresses were listed on Spam blacklists. It just seems strange to me that the IP addresses are mostly geographically in Korea but were involved in edit wars in Scottish issues. One address was shown to be a proxy user:59.4.230.99 and I have put up a request for check user also, here [1]. thanks --Karatekid7 03:27, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Request for Adminship
Thank you for supporting/objecting/tropicanising me in my request for Adminship. Although I wasn't promoted to admin status, with a final vote count of 14/27/12, I am very happy with the response I received from my fellow Wikipedians. I was pleasantly suprised at the support, and was touched by it. I will also work harder on preventing disputes and boosting my edit count (which is on the up), so thank you to all your objectors. Hopefully I will re-apply soon and try again for the mop. Thanks again, Highway Rainbow Sneakers

Just out of curiosity...

I'm just curious, why are some blocks 31 hours? Is there a special reason for that number? I can understand 24 hours, but why 31? G.He 03:47, 25 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't really think that there is any reason except that it is included in the drop-down box when blocking. Other than that, I haven't a clue. Naconkantari 03:48, 25 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why should the commercial product WebMD personal health record be listed?

I'm curious about why WebMD's personal health record (a commercial product for which users must pay an yearly fee) isn't being deleted. Shouldn't it? Please search the wikipedia for personal health record. You'll see their commercial product listed. Here's from WebMD's site on their personal health record product called WebMD Health Manager (https://healthmanager.webmd.com/manager/default.aspx?secure=1): "WebMD Health Manager Subscription Service is available free for 6 months, and then only $29.95 per year. "

It's about notability. If I do a google search for WebMD.com, I get 3 million hits. If I do a google search for RecordsForLiving.com, I get 300. WebMD is notable. RecordsForLiving is not. Naconkantari 04:10, 25 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, you will not succeed. Most editors apply after two to three months of activity. Please do not re-add your request, or it will be removed again. Naconkantari 22:59, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to run. You have no right to keep removing it. Please stop, I dont want to get in trouble because I have to keep reverting it. Thanks 03Rotpar 23:06, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why do you want to run? You will not succeed and are wasting everyone's time. Naconkantari 23:06, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This is really sad. I feel I have to "ask your premission" to run becuse I feel you will block me if I replace my nomination. If you feel it is a wast of time why don't you just let it stay, it takes more time and effort to keep reverting it. Thanks 03Rotpar 23:10, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, it takes no time at all to make a revert/block. Please quit pestering me on my talk page. If you want to apply to be a sysop, then please do so in a few months. Naconkantari 23:11, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

May I "please run" there is no rule against it and you have no right to prevent me to. 03Rotpar 23:12, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am not preventing you from running. I am telling you that if you revert one more time on the RFA page, you will be blocked for violating the three-revert rule. Naconkantari 23:13, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You "are" preventing me from running. You keep removing my self nomination and threaten to block me if I replace it. Will you also be blocked because you also keep "reverting" the self nomination I placed there? 03Rotpar 23:17, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No, I will request another administrator to block you. Please note that I am not the only person to revert your addition. Naconkantari 23:18, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a rule preventing me from running? I dont want to get into an argument with you over this, so is there someone else I can talk to about this? 03Rotpar 23:22, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No, there is no official policy preventing you from running, but the guidelines are that editors with less than 2-3 months experience and less than 1500 edits do not succeed. Naconkantari 23:23, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If there is "no official policy" can you just let me run, you dont have to vote, just oppose if you dont want me to be an admin. Thanks 03Rotpar 23:25, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Question

Hi Naconkantari,

Would these edits be considered vandalism? The user is reverted an article to a version several months ago without bringing it up on the talk page. Thanks. —Khoikhoi 23:28, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I would call the most recent one (third) vandalism, but the other two, I'd discuss with them on their talk page.

Agreed. By the way, you reverted something on the AfD right after I posted. Were you perhaps trying to delete the anon comment that I moved down from the established section to the anon section? Imposter.

Hi, Naconkantari. I want to report imposter of User:Arwel Parry. Did you already check the ID that is even worse than vandalism. I'm just scared. But It was sudden. Basically, He impersonated User:Arwel Parry. ID sounds like abusing him. Sorry for bothering you about ID imposter. So, Could you reply on my discussion's page? Thanks. Vote stacking

The user _meco placed this statemend at the bottom of the What Really Happened AfD:

Keep. It should be brought to the attention of all participating in this debate that in addition to Jeff Rense, Infowars.com and Prisonplanet.com, also Dissident Voice has been proposed for deletion at this time. __meco 08:27, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

This is a vote stacking attempt not to mention the fact that he gives no discussion to keeping or deleting the article. In fact he has done this on all of the AfD's of the pages in question not to mention accusing me of bad faith nominating on my talk page. Is this permitted? --Strothra 13:42, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

User Morgen Wick

Hello. Thank you for your recent comment regarding this user. However, the talk page of Mörgen Wick was emty and therefore one could not possibly have known that there was anything amiss. For future reference how does one know if there are problems with a new username? --Newton2 19:27, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please note also that a new user "Morqan wick" has just registered account. I assume that this username will also be blocked for being too similar to the aforementioned name. --Newton2 19:33, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

One possibility would be to wait a minute or two after the account is created and check the block log. Naconkantari 19:43, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why are you stopping me from adding facts about Iditarod dog deaths, etc. to the Iditarod page?

An encyclopedia is supposed to be factual. Why are you keeping me from editing the Iditarod page so that it includes important facts? You can read all the information on the Sled Dog Action Coalition website http://www.helpsleddogs.org. I invite you to take the Iditarod Challenge: read and verify the quotes on http://www.helpsleddogs.org/remarks.htm and on all the quote pages that link to it. The links can be found in the drop box at the top or at the bottom of the page. The material is all referenced. Look at it again and please try to be neutral or obective. Here it is:

In addition to adding these facts, I removed one external link for a website that supports the Iditarod. To be fair, don't you think Wikipedia should have an equal number of website from both sides?

I hope you will remove my ban? Have you banned the people who don't want the facts about the dogs deaths, etc. to be told? You know, those people who keep deleting the facts I put on the page?

Linking to Flash-requiring site and Alfakim/Albotim

Recently, you blocked Alfakim's bot, Albotim for linking to a Flash-requiring site from a number of Stargate episode articles. Alfakim did this as per my reccomendation, see Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Stargate#WP:RS_and_official_sites. While I understand that many users have trouble with Flash (myself included, on my primary computer), I felt it was necessary because the external links in said articles could be considered unreliable per WP:RS. (Most of the transcripts are from StargateWiki and fan sites, and GateWorld, while more reliable than the other sites, is still a fan site). While the MGM site (the one Alfakim was linking to) does require Flash (regrettably) it is the official Stargate site, and thus probably considered more reliable. When necessary for referencing, links which have gone dead (meaning no one can access them) can be kept (assuming no replacement link of equal caliber can be found) per WP:CITE, and I hope that this will be too. In any case, those of us who wish to avoid Flash sites can use the other external links (which are not being removed), even if they are considered less reliable. In any case, whether you agree with me or not, I request that you not blame Alfakim for this, but discuss this with / blame me instead. Armedblowfish (talk|contribs) 04:22, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

After reviewing the external link guidelines closely, I found this entry: Sites that require external applications (such as Flash or Java) to view the relevant content unless (1) it is the official site of the subject of the article, (2) the article is about those media, or (3) the site is being cited as a reference.. You said that the link was to the official website, so I'm inclined to agree with you about the placement of the link. I'd also like to apologise if I have upset anyone over this, espically to Alfakim. I have self-reverted all the pages I removed the links from. Thanks Naconkantari 04:33, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Great, thank you. : ) I hope you don't mind if I copy this to Alfakim's talk page? Armedblowfish (talk|contribs) 10:22, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry I didn't know about this system I'm new to Wiki, I'd like to just point out Khoikhoi and a little group of extremists have no regard for objective history, delete and invent stories to suit their pollitical orientation.

For example, Britannica 1911 clearly states Tarkhan al-Farabi was of Turk stock, now apparently according to them everybody is lying in a conspiracy against Persians as they seem to believe he was a Persian.

Next unreliable sources like Iranica are used which add's nationalism to the equation which really isn't welcomed.

Then they try to include him as an "Iranian" scientists while refusing to include him as a "Turkic" scientist.

This is just one example, if your willing to help against this blatent hijacking and vandalism of Wiki then I would be very greatfull.

Regards

--Johnstevens5 14:14, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

With all due respect, the 1911 Brittanica is a bit outdated. Perhaps you could find a more recent source. Naconkantari 14:18, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well Tarkhan al-Farabi has been dead for over 1000 years so its not really a "recent" matter and Britannica 1911 is very well sourced and referrenced, while the Iranica source always leave's the door open to bias.

Now an argument that has been used is that its not 100% clear what his ethnicity was, however, while saying this the same people include him as a "Persian scientist" and find it unnacceptable when I change this to or include "Turkic Scientist" and "Muslim scientist".

Its a blatent violation of Wikipedia.

--Johnstevens5 14:41, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's funny, that User:Johnstevens5 is now so desperately pointing at the Encyclopaedia Britannica 1911, while in the article Ulugh Beg he totally denied and even purposely changed the quote of the same source. Because in regard of Ulugh Beg, the Britannica 1911 says that he was a "Persian scientist" ... Johnstevens changed "Persian" into "Turkish" and claimed that this was the opinion of the Britannica. See Ulugh Beg history. Tajik 15:20, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Naconkantari. I saw that after you helped revert some vandalism to my userpage last night, you voted in the AFD for the Mouhammad Faye article. Problems with User:Johnstevens5

Hello admin. Me and some others have problems with Johstevens5. He is constantly vandalizing articles, pushing for an extrem Turkish-nationalistic and anti-Persian POV, rejecting authoritative sources, etc.

He had already vandalized the articles Babur and Mughals, and went on with messing up the articles Alisher Navoi (here even with copy-right issues) and Ulugh Beg. And now, he has started to vandalize al-Farabi, again pushing for a pseudo-scientific, anti-Persian, Turkish-nationalistic POV.

I have warned him on his talk-page that I will contact an admin if he continues [3]. However, he simply deleted my message [4] and continued his vandalism [5][6][7] . He is totally ignoring the al-Farabi talk-page. He is again ignoring authoritative sources, such as Encyclopaedia of Islam (THE source regarding Islamic history) and Encyclopaedia Iranica (THE source regarding Iranian history).

I had already asked User:Khoikhoi for help, and he replied that he keeps an eye on this user and - if necessairy - will ask for a permanent ban [8].

I am going to revert al-Farabi for a last time (because of 3RR) and then I leave it to you or any other admin to solve the problem. This is not an issue of different opinions, but that of a Turkish-nationalistic zealot pushing for an extreme racist POV.

We need your help!

Tajik 15:10, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, he is continuing his nonsense [9] I do not know how to report him. Can you help me? Tajik 15:28, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

MY COMMENTS KEEP BEING DELETED, THE ACTUAL NATIONALIST IS TAJIK, THIS CAN BE PROVEN IN SEVERAL POSTS.

Kizilbash he cannot accept that they were predominantly Turks

al-Farabi He attempts to disregard Britainnica 1911

Babur Apparently even Babur himself is lying according to him.

There is an extremist anti-Turk sentiment by this guy, nobody can be a Turk they can only be either a Mongol or a Persian, its total racism and prejeduce and I'm just standing up against it.

Don't allow this to carry on, its an Encyclopedia, not a Pan-Persian extremist site.

Tajik wants to shut me up because I'm bringing real fact's to the site which are proving his propoganda to be total and utter lies.

--Johnstevens5 19:22, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tajik has broke 3rr rule!

He is breaking the rule here

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babur

Tajik, doesn't seem to be able to accept that in Babur's very own personal memoirs he clearly wrote that he is a Turk and all the people in his home town are Turks.

This is fully sourced and referrenced, if he/she doesn't like it then this person has absolutely no regard's for history and has a nationalist agenda.

User:BrianZ block appeal

This user has appealed his block. I can only see three reverts today to the article from this user: [10] [11] [12], so on the face of it he followed the rule. Could you explain if I'm missing a revert, or if there was some other factor in your block than the simple numbers? --Sam Blanning(talk) 19:03, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

He has been edit warring over links on that page for a few days now. I took into account his revert war just two days ago over the same content. Both users are trying to get the other blocked for violating the 3RR, so both have been blocked for a cooldown period. The article is now protected until they can decide on a solution. Naconkantari 19:11, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough, I agree with your reasoning (not that it particularly matters now, of course). --Sam Blanning(talk) 10:04, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Naconkantari, I apologize for deleting links that are against Wikipedia policy. Due to your blocking me without true investigation, I have decided to not police articles for spam anymore. I want nothing more than to become an upstanding member of Wikipedia and allowing myself to "edit-war" with a spammer makes me look foolish to anyone in the future considering me for a committee or software such as Vandalproof. It is a shame that advertisements have won out in this case and I realize that this will be a constant battle with no end in site. However, you have just lost an expert on the Atkins diet that could have helped with the spammer load. I have removed the Atkins Nutritional Approach from my watchlistand will never visit there again. BrianZ 05:24, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You don't posses checkuser nor is there a checkuser request against that user that would let you know who the user's IP is. And if you knew their IP to know it were a proxy, why not just block that? Ahhhh I think I just figured it out... slashies eh? Kevin_b_er 06:44, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you

Hi Nacon. I wanted to thank you, not only for your support in my RfB, but also for your helpfullness and diligence in reverting the several AOL IP attacks that my RfB sustained during its first half. A stand-up job! Thank you so much! Cheers, Redux 21:18, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My RfA

Hello, Nakon/archive4, and thank you for the supportive vote on my recent RfA! With a final vote of 84/1/4, I have now been entrusted with the mop, bucket and keys. I will be slowly acclimating myself to my new tools over the next months, but welcome any and all feedback and suggestions on how I might be able to use them to help the project. Thanks again! Thank you

Hi Nakon/archive4, thank you for voting in my RFA which failed eventually at a result of (91/51/8). I do not plan to run for adminship until a later date. Once again, I will like to thank you for voting. --Terence Ong (talk | contribs) 14:31, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

AfD

Could you relist the AfD discussion of Taran Rampersad? This article should most probably be deleted due to it's lack of verifiability and claims to notability so I don't want to see it closed as no concensus because it's only gotten two opposing "votes." It needs to get some more. Thanks, --Strothra 01:09, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

SelfDefenseForums Not Spam

Hi there,

I'm the moderator of selfdefenseforums.com. I saw that we have been added to a blacklist. That's strange because I've never added SDF before, that I can remember. SDF is a legitimate, non-profit site; we don't push any ads and we don't nearly make back even our $200/month hosting bill. Many of the sites listed in your martial arts, combatives and self-defense articles are either splogs or hard-sell commercial sites; we're neither. Thanks! I have replied on m:Talk:Spam blacklist. Naconkantari 20:46, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Episode list for ER and plagiarism

Hi there,

Why did you revert my edits on the List of ER episodes page? Did you read my comments in the discussion section? Here they are, in case you missed them: "I reverted back to the April 1, 2006 version because every single episode summary (edited in by 67.34.214.249, 67.34.214.218, and 67.34.215.68) was copied, word for word, spelling and grammatical errors intact, from the TV.com ER pages. I am a frequent contributor to those pages, and have written quite a few of those summaries. I don't appreciate having my words copied without permission or proper citation. Many, many people have contributed to the TV.com summaries, and it is not right to undermine their hard work. I encourage people to fill in the missing summaries with accounts written in their own words."

I don't think it's proper to include material stolen from other websites. I worked very hard and was quite diligent in checking that every single one of the 269 episode summaries was, in fact, copied word for word from TV.com. Was it all for naught? Do I have to go in and delete each one individually and paste in the summary that was on the page before April 2, 2006?

I reverted your edit [14] because it cut off a word. If you wanted to remove the entire section, then feel free to do so. Naconkantari 21:47, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm confused... Why didn't you just revert to the version immediately preceding the one with the error? 24.21.87.178 22:03, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
