Quick question

Hi there - thought I'd pick your brains about this one. I reverted some vandalistic changes by two different anonymous users at People in quick succession, then went to leave warning messages at their talk pages. When I came to the second one, I found that you had left the warning there (unsigned, btw). I'm sure I've seen somewhere that the usual procedure is to let the reverting editor leave the warning, but I can't find that in a WP policy off-hand. Do you know whether there is such a policy? My experience (admittedly from only a few days of anti-vandalism fun) seem to suggest that that's how things are usually done, possibly because some people can do more things at once with their tools, but you may well know more than I do. (Just to be clear, I'm not bothered about missing out on leaving one warning - just wondered if there is a protocol for these things). TTFN Bencherlite 02:22, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I found WP:VANDALISM after leaving the above after saying in my previous message that I couldn't find what I was after in a WP policy (d'oh!) and agree with your interpretation. No worries about earlier, as I said. And as for mistakes - I realised I was getting a bit trigger-happy a couple of days ago when I put {{db-bio}} on someone's user-page, and had to revert it sheepishly and apologise on their talk page! The standard vandalism templates like {{uw-vandalism1}} have a parameter for the name of the page (use {{uw-vandalism1|NAME OF PAGE}}), but they don't have any way of including a link to the actual edit. Creating such a template would be possible, however using it would require you to go back and find the 'diff' of each reverted edit after reverting it, copy the URL from the address bar, and paste it into a template on the user's talk page, which is a bit too much fuss for an ordinary vandalism warning.

Any help reverting vandalism is appreciated, so don't worry about not doing it. If you do want to include a link in the message, you can just tag one onto the end before your signature.

The warnings I leave are generated by a program I've written to help deal with vandalism, which keeps track of the edits reverted and fills in the URL for me. It's not really in a state that I can make it generally available at the moment, but there seem to be other tools around if you're interested, e.g. WP:TWINKLE, WP:VF and WP:VPRF. I've just logged on, and after our chat last night your user page is on my watch list. Saw there was an rv edit summary that someone had left on your userpage, so I checked out of interest. Pop-ups is one of the most commonly used one.

Ive got a fairly customised monobook.js and monobook.css, copied from someone else and slightly modified for colours and such

I dont use it that much, as it doesnt affect IE...

Re: Twinkle

Hey - Twinkle is basically a set of tools that add various functions. For instance, there is a button that enables you to rollback edits by a particular user, and there is also a menu for selecting warning templates. You install it but pasting some code into your your monobook.js file. There are more details about it here, and it tells you what code to copy and paste. I also use Vandal Fighter to see all the edits coming in. They work quite well together. Will (aka Wimt) 00:35, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

Saw you asked about Twinkle

WP:TWINKLE is the latest in a long line of user scripts, I believe most of its features relate to recent changes patrol (and anti-vandalism especially). It'll add quick rollback, automatic reporting to WP:AIV, and so forth. It integrates into your browser, which is useful. I see you've used VandalProof, previously, so it'll be the same category of help as that. They've all got strengths and weaknesses. :) If you find that's a bit much, popups can still be pretty useful. – Luna Santin (talk) 00:37, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for stopping by - good to hear from you. Korean keyboard sounds fun! You're right, I do need to archive (these messages just keep coming, and not all from you(!)) - I've seen Werdnabot on my travels (which you use, I think) and so I've added the code from the Wernabot "how to" page. If it doesn't work, I'll come and have a look at your code. Edits are increasing, but mainly reverting vandalism. Haven't used NPWatcher much, but it does have a handy "one-click" function to list a page for speedy deletion and put the appropriate warning on the creator's talk page. Probably more things I can do with it when I get more familiar with the policies (getting to know "speedy delete" reasons quite well, have PROD-ed a couple of articles and taken a couple of things to discussion for deletion, but still a way to go...). Fortunately, I've not had too much bother so far as a result of my edits - a couple of vandal-fighting mistakes (by me or by others) that have been resolved quickly and pleasantly with some discussion. Reading around, the problem seems to increase when people have rather different views about what a page should, or should not, contain, and I'm not planning on getting too involved with contentious subjects just yet... Avro Arrow

Hi Mr. Redskunk, I wonder if you could take a look at the Avro CF-105 Arrow discussion page. It seems to have degraded into a discussion over the relative merits of the decision to cancel the Arrow. However, there is an editor that has been compelled to take the discussion into a bizarre turn. He actually backs up his own opinion with comments from an unknown IP address that can be traced back to... him? I don't need anyone to intercede except for maybe an administrator but take a look and give me your opinion. Bzuk 04:39 4 March 2007 (UTC).

The trouble, in a nitshell( no typo!) is some people have become deeply attached to the'conspiracy legend" It gets passed around from Arrow buff to Arrow buff.

There's a chance that things will calm down of their own accord, of course. It is surprising how excitable people can get about their favourite articles. Doing something else will help take your mind off things, with any luck - although helping out at WP:DEAD might not be everyone's idea of fun! I think your user page is fine - a balance between useful links and some (but not excessive) personal information about you. Gloster Meteor

Without drawing down 'Holy fire', Bill, please consider Michaels' argument in view of: a. Precise dates for events in Nazi Germany , summer 1944-spring 1945, are OFTEN not verifiable. The reasons: 1. Records were ALTERED to place, or remove, participants from events prosecuted. German military staff were ordered to attend, slave labour conferences to render them complicit. In order not to explain that someone was a powerless bystander at an event discussing slave labour, documetation ,is 'produced' that he was flying the Me262 on a certain date, for example.

I refer you to Robert Jacksons' Nuremburg summaries. Not only were the Nazis masters at altering fact, some records were altered to protect the truly innocent.

Michael, Bill, would you accept the Scottish verdict of 'not proven', given the nature of the evidence ?
