Your edit to Straw-bale construction (a.o.)

Welcome to Wikipedia. We invite everyone to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, the external links you added to the page Straw-bale construction do not comply with our guidelines for external links. Wikipedia is not a mere directory of links; nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Since Wikipedia uses nofollow tags, external links do not alter search engine rankings. If you feel the link should be added to the article, then please discuss it on the article's talk page before reinserting it. Please take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. --Dirk Beetstra T C 22:54, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

Oliver: I don't agree that this is a spam link (see my note at Talk:Straw-bale construction. It is possible that your promotion of the link makes it look like you are advertising something. I've asked Dirk Beetstra to clarify why he thinks that it should be regarded as spam. There is a chance that he has seen something that I've missed. Failing that, the link should stand. However, there is a (very understandable) push to eliminate links inserted by people promoting themselves or their product, so discretion is advised. Sunray 08:39, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

Please cease your excessive Canvassing and overtly soliciting the opinions of other Wikipedians on their talk pages. This is WP:SPAM and is known as "internal spamming" and "cross-posting". WP:CANVASS --Hu12 16:07, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

Dear Hu12, I'm a little perplexed. The reason I requested the opinion of other wiki members, who have contributed to the Straw-bale construction, was as a consequence of advice from Dirk Beetstra to discuss the inclusion of a link. Is there another way I should have started a discussion? I'm keen to learn. naturalhomes 18:11, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
Suggesting such a link on a talkpage is perfectly fine, however it doesn't confer a license to WP:CANVASS editors on their talk pages. Some links can be a service to the reader, but they cannot improve the encyclopedia or article itself. It is sometimes acceptable to contact a limited group of editors when major Article issues are raised, such as mergers and deletion. It is not acceptable to solicit for a links inclusion, especialy one you have a conflict of interest with--Hu12 17:39, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

Please do not add promotional material to Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a vehicle for advertising. You are, however, encouraged to add appropriate content to the encyclopedia. If you feel the material in question should be added to the article, then please discuss it on the article's talk page rather than re-adding it. See the welcome page to learn more about Wikipedia. Thank you.
If you have a close connection to some of the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, edits where there is a conflict of interest, or where such a conflict might reasonably be inferred from the tone of the edit and the proximity of the editor to the subject, are strongly discouraged. If you have a conflict of interest, you should avoid or exercise great caution when:

  1. editing articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with,
  2. participating in deletion discussions about articles related to your organization or its competitors,
  3. linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam);
    and you must always:
  4. avoid breaching relevant policies and guidelines, especially neutral point of view, verifiability, and autobiography.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have conflict of interest, please see Wikipedia:Business' FAQ. For more details about what constitutes a conflict of interest, please see Wikipedia:Conflict of Interest. Thank you. --Hu12 16:14, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

I do not agree with this rationale for reasons I have stated on the article's talk page and at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Spam. I have also commented to Naturalhomes (above) about promotion. Sunray 16:54, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
Hello Hu12, I've already followed advice from Dirk Beetstra by discussing additions to the article with other Wiki members that have contributed in the past. naturalhomes 17:53, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
As I mentioned above, suggesting a link on a talkpage is perfectly fine, however It is not acceptable to WP:CANVASS editors on their talk pages for a links inclusion, especialy one you have a conflict of interest with. It is sometimes acceptable to contact a limited group of editors when major Article issues are raised, such as mergers, redirects and deletion. --Hu12 17:44, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for that. I only asked other editors in the way I did because I was asked in this way myself by Jrsnbarn so I assumed this was the protocol. Regards, Oliver naturalhomes 19:14, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
