You're doing just fine doing exactly what you're doing. If you just want a quick breakdown, consider checking out Wikipedia:Talk_dos_and_don'ts. In general: if you have a disagreement, talk it out. Communicating via text alone is difficult, so it's important to assume wp:good faith. In the end, it's just people talking to people, so feel free to ask questions.
