re: Music genre classifications

The generally accepted (and this isn't universial by any means) is just their general style of music both then and now, and assuming your asking about Green Day specifically one of the main reasons for the dual classification that is now being used is due to the fact that they exhibit characteristics of both genres and nobody can agree how exactly to label them. Can't there be a small note next to the other genre, to say that's their style today?
