How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

An interesting edit that you published in August 2020

Greetings Newyorkbrad. I'm in the midst of some RfC-before activities and in researching the AN/ANI archives (a necessary part of my RfC-before obligation) I stumbled upon this very interesting comment posted by you. Taken in context, it seems pretty clear that you were not aware of Wikipedia:Consensus § No consensus (point 3) when you published it. And considering the esteemed replies engendered,[1],[2],[3],[4] you were not alone in your bliss (this is not a criticism as I too was not aware of the policy provision until quite recently). That it's been policy since 2011 and somehow remains practically unknown to exist boggles my mind; hidden, all these years, in the plainest of plain sight. I am keen to know your thoughts to these regards, and there's one other thing. Part of my RfC-before objectives is to assemble a collection of links to demonstrate my hypothesis: that the policy's non-use is not the result of choosing to ignore it, but instead, not knowing that any such choice even exists. And the links I've shown here are perfect in serving that end. As a courtesy, I wanted to ensure that you wouldn't take umbrage by my doing so? I'd sooner not use them if you thought that you might. Thank you.--John Cline (talk) 02:10, 25 January 2022 (UTC)

@John Cline: Thanks for the courtesy notice. Please feel free to cite my comment if you wish. Regards, Newyorkbrad (talk) 20:45, 26 January 2022 (UTC)

Happy Adminship Anniversary!

Wishing Newyorkbrad a very happy adminship anniversary on behalf of the Birthday Committee! Best wishes! CAPTAIN RAJU(T) 18:28, 21 January 2022 (UTC)

@CAPTAIN RAJU: Thanks for the good wishes. Lesser, thanks, perhaps, for reminding me that it's been 15 years since my RfA. Time flies.... Regards, Newyorkbrad (talk) 20:47, 26 January 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for the IP block

When you get a minute, can you revdel my talk page. Guess it's not a big deal, but.... Thanx again, - FlightTime (open channel) 03:27, 31 January 2022 (UTC)

Remove IPs TPA

Could you revoke the IP 152.32.161.144's TPA? ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 03:35, 31 January 2022 (UTC)

Nevermind another admin already did. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 03:35, 31 January 2022 (UTC)
