coming from the institution myself, I commented on TRUE scenarios in the school, in a fairly neutral tone, and added details about certain parts of the school.

Yet you, from as far away as the USA with clearly no idea about the school, think you know more than I do?

re Templates

Thanks for your help. I'm just going to do it... I'm currently on a real blitz against seriously problematic but "vital" and "important" articles. Many of the articles on the broader topics of history of Art are Vital, but are not at present listed as such, and are seriously Start Class. On the other hand, a lot of less important articles about individual paintings/buildings/artists are GA or A.

--Amandajm 08:42, 26 May 2007 (UTC)

Hi Nick!
Yes, I understandd about the ratings system. The problem is, that it looks as if whoever decided which articles on Art and Architecture were "Vital" didn't thnk it through quite well eneogh.
The "Vital" Articles ought to be the same ones that appear in the major boxes of lists of articles ie. Art:- History of art:- Prehistoric art, Western art, Eastern art, Islamic art, History of painting, art history etc. With a similar list for History of Architecture. But the articles on this list have not been identified as "vital".
I wrote a list of art and architectural periods for inclusion among "Vital articles", (Classical, Byzantine, Romanesque etc) and the list was so long that I scrapped it. I think that these very broad topics that are covered in the "above paragraph" need to be rewritten and brought up to scratch. They ought to all be "GA" at the very least. Everyone of these articles provide a lead to all the significant periods.
Whoever began the series of articles in the first place, knew what they were about, but it hasn't been carried through, and the significance has been lost, when creating the list of Importance, or when occupying the time of editors. However, if you decide to take on a large important article and "fix it" some of them get offended at the major overhaul. People are a bit daunted at doing major things. Sometimes absolute crap can sit in an article for months because people aren't game to remove it. eg In the History of painting there are a lot of very carefully chosen galleries. Someone had dropped in 12 paintings by a single second-rate painter, and they were allowed to stay there. (This is in an article where Raphael, Rubens and Rembrandt have one pic each.)
On the other hand, you get a lot of articles about one painting, one building that people are prepared to do a lot of work on, because it's not so much effort. You can polish it up and get a star for it. Major art and architecture articles don't rate well on the quality scale, no matter how comprehensive, well written and well illustrated they are. If it is a very big subject eg Renaissance architecture, someone can always find something lacking (Yeah, no expert has come along to fill in a few lines on Russian architecture...I'll have to do it myself). I'm hesitant to put it up for review. --Amandajm 02:03, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

My stupidity

Sorry to bother you, just wanted to explain something about my request to usurpate : I couldnt notify "Venator" about my wishes, because he doesnt exist, that is he is me; this is what I commented to User:The_Sunshine_Man in his discussion page :

Sorry to bother you, just wanted to say that the username "Venator" is actually mine, from a previous attempt to create an account, when I wasnt sure how to do it. I didnt use Wikipedia for a while after that, and when I returned, I started contributing to the Spanish and Romanian version : [1] and [2]. When I tried to log in to the English version one, I discovered that the username existed, but it didnt have an e-mail adress recorded for it, and I had forgotten my password. I know that this isnt very important, but I would like to keep the same username for all versions of Wikipedia, if its possible. --Venatoreng 20:46, 9 June 2007 (UTC)

Have a look at Wikipedia:Changing username/Usurpations because the account which you wish to be your name meets the requrements ofr usurpation, leave a note here if you do decide to go for usurpation and I'll help you threw the proccess if necessary. The Sunshine Man 20:52, 9 June 2007 (UTC)

So, this is my short, sad, yet boring story. If I cant change my username now, theres no problem, but at I least wanted to explain myself. Have a good day or night, --Venatoreng 01:04, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

I appreciate the point on warning levels, but I think that the evidence is clear that User:Rawhider exists only to vandalize my user page. (This account is probably of someone who takes exception to some of my past edits, but does not expect Mediation, RfC, or Arbitration to work in his-or-her favor.) In that context, I don't think that jumping through the level-hoops isappropriately taken as a prerequisite for blocking; indeed, I think that the account ought to be indefinitely blocked as a vandalism-only account. —SlamDiego←T 18:57, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

Help request

Yes mate. I submitted an article Pacific Prime Insurance Brokers and i need an experienced wikipedian to help me get it up to standards (in terms of what i have to do)... there are secondary sources and such there, but i'm wondering if it is enough to take down the deletion tag Scrugbyhk 07:11, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

Clarification

Gameplay in Mass Effect How do I delete the page correctly? (Obviously it didn't work the way I wanted.) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.177.120.5 (talkcontribs) 18:18, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

I'm not sure exactly why you want to delete the page, I don't think I've seen an explanation from you about that, but there are three main ways that articles can be deleted on Wikipedia (speedy deletion, proposed deletion, and Articles for Deletion discussions). Refer to Wikipedia:Deletion policy for more information. If you can provide me with more information about why you think the article should be deleted, feel free to explain here and I can give you a more detailed answer. --NickContact/Contribs 18:27, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

It's a moot point now. My sense was this though: there are no walkthroughs, hints, cheats or breakdowns of individual "levels" of the game, ergo this section is not a game guide. And as Wiki policy doesn't define the exact criteria for what becomes a "game guide" (insofar as I have seen), I felt it was unnecessarily excised. Deleting something just because it can be, is not the same thing as needing to be and I didn't see any harm in leaving the information as it existed. Besides citing a vague policy, no one actually gave me a good rationale for why the information absolutly had to go. Simply being a slave to policy does not a good article make.

It doesn't matter now and let's fact it, all of this is ridiculous as video games (along with several other things I could list) probably have no business in something pretending to be an encyclopedia. All the information on video games is readily available in a multitude of other places.and while I won't argue that trivial articles (as a whole) should be removed from Wikipedia, there should be some perspective. When people start arguing about what constitutes "encyclopedic", they should probably consider that the article they are discussing would (more than likely) never in a million years make it into any legitimate encyclopedia. As others have pointed out, the lightsaber page is twice as long as the sword page (along with several other fiction vs. real world topics). That's crazy but it's what this so called "encyclopedia" endorses and permits so long as it doesn't violate "policy".

Followup question

Hey, thanks for answering my question. There is just one more point I want to clarify. Let's say that you have an image on Wikipedia with a size of 800x600. You look on Commons and discover that it has the exact same image, except that its size is 1024x768. Are these two images considered the same?--Danaman5 05:49, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

And how about if the two are in different file formats?--Danaman5 05:52, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

He had done this for several images.

Now before removing his edits we want to show some policy regarding this to him. That is the reason why I am asking the help of wikipedians.--Shijualex 09:12, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

Article Deletions

{{helpme}} When an article is debated for deletion, there are essentially two possible outcomes: either it is deleted or it is not deleted. When the article is not deleted, a Wikipedia user can see the deletion debate/discussion on the Talk Page of the article. Question 1: When the article is deleted, what happens? Question 2: Where can a Wikipedia user see the deletion debate/discussion of the article that was deleted? Question 3: Where can a Wikipedia user see the actual article that was deleted? Question 4: How would a Wikipedia user know (ahead of time) that an article is under consideration for deletion, so that the user can participate in the debate before the debate ends? Thanks. (JosephASpadaro 06:13, 30 July 2007 (UTC))

  • Answer 1: If the outcome of the deletion discussion is to delete the article, an administrator performs the deletion which removes the article from public view, but the article is retained on the servers for access by administrators (see answer 3).
  • Answer 2: If the article was deleted through the Articles for Deletion process, which is the only deletion process for articles which requires discussion (the other two being speedy deletion and proposed deletion), you can find the discussion at "Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/ArticleName" replacing ArticleName with the name of the article.
  • Answer 3: Copies of deleted articles are only viewable by Wikipedia administrators. If you'd like a copy of a deleted article, you can ask on the talk page of an administrator listed in "Category:Wikipedia administrators who will provide copies of deleted articles".
  • Answer 4: When a deletion discussion is started on an article at WP:AFD, a tag is placed on the top of the article linking to the discussion. Also, the creator of the article is notified. Please note, however, that there are two other methods that articles can be deleted without discussion. Please see Wikipedia:Deletion policy for more information.

I hope I have answered all your questions completely. Feel free to ask if I have left anything unanswered. --NickContact/Contribs 06:43, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the comprehensive reply -- it was very helpful. It raises more questions for me, if you don't mind. (1) If an article is in fact deleted, how would the user know by which of the three methods it was deleted? (2) I created an article called "Dy-No-Mite" many months ago, and later found that it was deleted. How / where can I find that? I am not sure by which method it was deleted. (3) I am still unclear on how a user knows in advance that an article is considered for deletion and is open to debate. (4) If the article is on my Watch List, will I get a change/edit notification? (5) If the article is not on my Watch List, I would never know that the article is being debated? Thanks for any insight on this. It is much appreciated. Thank you. (JosephASpadaro 20:37, 30 July 2007 (UTC))
Not a problem, let me try to break them down individually again. (1) When an article is deleted, the administrator provides a reason that is put into the deletion log. This reason usually indicates how the article was deleted. To find the deletion log, go to Special Pages in the toolbox and click on Logs. (2) I was able to find an entry in the deletion log for "Dy-no-mite" (not "Dy-No-Mite") which can be found here. According to the deletion log, it was deleted via the proposed deletion process. See that page for more information. (3) Whenever a user decides they want to list an article for deletion, they edit the page and place a special notice at the top of the article which provides instructions to those who want to have a say in the deletion of the article. (4) Yes, if the article is on your watch list you will be able to see every edit to the page, including the edit where the other editor added the deletion tag. (5) If the article is not on your watch list, you would just have to stumble across the article while the notice was on the top of the page. --NickContact/Contribs 18:40, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
OK -- very helpful. I see how it works now. Thanks for your comprehensive and helpful responses. (JosephASpadaro 04:04, 3 August 2007 (UTC))

Thanks, Nick!

Hopefully I'm doing this in the proper fashion. I just wanted to thank you again for getting me all set up with a Wikipedia account I can use from an otherwise blacklisted corporate IP. I looked forward to learning the ins and outs of being a contributing Wikipedian. Thanks again!
