Disambiguation link notification for January 7

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Tomzanonia, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Dod (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Italic title template

Hi, this template is not needed with {{Speciesbox}}, which supplies it. Also when it is needed before a taxobox, it is generally important NOT to include a newline between it and the taxobox template, otherwise you get an extra blank line at the start of the article. Tabernaemontana pandacaqui geographic categories

Hello NotWith, I've reverted your recent category change to Tabernaemontana pandacaqui. The plant is described as a "shrub or tree" so the "Flora of" categories seem more appropriate than the narrower "Trees of" categories which might not capture the "shrubbiness". Invitation join the new Physiology Wikiproject!

Physiology gives us an understanding of how and why things in the field of medicine happen. Together, let us jumpstart the project and get it going. Our energy is all it needs.

Based on the long felt gap for categorization and improvization of WP:MED articles relating to the field of physiology, the new WikiProject Physiology has been created. WikiProject Physiology is still in its infancy and needs your help. On behalf of a group of editors striving to improve the quality of physiology articles here on Wikipedia, I would like to invite you to come on board and participate in the betterment of physiology related articles. Help us to jumpstart this WikiProject.

  • Feel free to leave us a message at any time on the WikiProkect Physiology talk page. If you are interested in joining the project yourself, there is a participant list where you can sign up. Please leave a message on the talk page if you have any problems, suggestions, would like review of an article, need suggestions for articles to edit, or would like some collaboration when editing!
  • You can tag the talk pages of relevant articles with {{WikiProject Physiology|class=|importance=}} with your assessment of the article class and importance alongwith. Please note that WP:Physiology, WP:Physio, WP:Phy can be used interchangeably.
  • You will make a big difference to the quality of information by adding reliable sources. Sourcing physiology articles is essential and makes a big difference to the quality of articles. And, while you're at it, why not use a book to source information, which can source multiple articles at once!
  • We try and use a standard way of arranging the content in each article. That layout is here. These headings let us have a standard way of presenting the information in anatomical articles, indicate what information may have been forgotten, and save angst when trying to decide how to organise an article. That said, this might not suit every article. If in doubt, be bold!
  • Why not try and strive to create a good article! Physiology related articles are often small in scope, have available sources, and only a limited amount of research available that is readily presentable!
  • Your contributions to the WikiProject page, related categories and templates is also welcome.
  • To invite other editors to this WikiProject, copy and past this template (with the signature):
  • To welcome editors of physiology articles, copy and past this template (with the signature):
  • You can feel free to contact us on the WikiProkect Physiology talk page if you have any problems, or wish to join us. You can also put your suggestions there and discuss the scope of participation.

Hoping for your cooperation! DiptanshuTalk 12:50, 27 April 2014 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Platidic

Hello NotWith,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Platidic for deletion, because it doesn't appear to contain any encyclopedic content. Take a look at our suggestions for essential content in short articles to learn what should be included.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Jhona43 (talk) 09:11, 29 April 2014 (UTC)

Wikispecies is not a reliable source.

Please do not use Wikispecies as a reference, ever. Like Wikipedia, it can be edited by anyone at any time, and thus is not a reliable source. For instance, you used apparently used Wikispecies as a reference in Aterpini, which in turns references Oberprieler, 2010 which, since it was published , dated, and unalterable, would be a much better source to cite, assuming it verifies the information in the wiki article. At the same time, you should never cite Wikipedia on Wikipedia, since the article cited may not have the information when someone refers to it at a later date. Ask me on my talk page if you have any questions. Cheers, --Animalparty-- (talk) 02:23, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

"Evolutionary history of"

I'd never seen the logic of having articles at titles like "Evolutionary history of plants" as opposed to "Evolution of plants" – evolution necessarily operates over time, so is intrinsically historical in this sense. Categorization of plant taxa

Hi, the system for categorizing plant taxa is complicated (too complicated in my view, but I didn't invent it!). It's described at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Plants/Categorization. Category:Boryaceae, for example, does not belong in Category:Asparagales families. Only the article Boryaceae belongs in Category:Asparagales families as well as in Category:Asparagales. Peter coxhead (talk) 22:05, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

Also, consider Category:Oxyanthus. Rather than putting this category into Category:Ixoroideae, really the articles in the category should be re-categorized as Category:Ixoroideae and Category:Oxyanthus marked for deletion since it's too small (10 seems a possible minimum size, although some regard this as too small). Peter coxhead (talk) 22:14, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

Category question

Hi, could you perhaps enlighten me what the difference is between "mouse genes" and "Genes mutated in mice", I'm a bit at a loss here... --Randykitty (talk) 09:47, 11 August 2014 (UTC)

Here the small intro in the catagoey "Genes mutated in mice" : Genes that have been mutated in the germline of a mouse; including those genetically engineered in knock out mice, those disrupted by random mutagenesis and spontaneously acquired mutations. Cheers. --NotWith (talk) 09:51, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
  • I guess that's what I expected. So that's what mutated genes are. I don't think that definition leaves a single gene for the "mouse genes" category... --Randykitty (talk) 09:59, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
  • Any further thoughts on this? --Randykitty (talk) 13:48, 1 September 2014 (UTC)

Category redirection

Unfortunately, categories cannot be redirected. See WP:CATRED. Another of those irritating Wikipedia technicalities! Peter coxhead (talk) 07:54, 20 September 2014 (UTC)

Categorization of plant articles

Hi, I'm afraid that you've been categorizing plant articles incorrectly, albeit doubtless in good faith. First, see the note at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Plants#Taxonomy categories. Second, obsolete taxa, like Diplophragma should be put into a (sub)category of Category:Historically recognized angiosperm taxa.

Additionally, obsolete taxa don't have a taxobox, and at the level of genus or species generally shouldn't have an article, but be just a redirect to the currently accepted name. Peter coxhead (talk) 19:52, 9 September 2014 (UTC)

Note that categories should not be created unless they will contain at least 10 items (other categories or articles) or, exceptionally, clearly have the potential to contain many items (e.g. a large genus with few species articles yet written might warrant its own category). Peter coxhead (talk) 09:38, 11 September 2014 (UTC)
For example "Monotypic Urticaceae genera" is never going to be a large enough group to justify a separate category. Peter coxhead (talk) 08:01, 20 September 2014 (UTC)

Question

More than a month ago I left a category question here (above). I'd appreciate an answer. Thanks. --Randykitty (talk) 13:14, 20 September 2014 (UTC)

Classification of monotypic taxa

There is a consensus that a genus article (like Sarcobatus, which we both recently categorized) is classified into both a taxonomic category (in this case Category:Caryophyllales) and a "TAXON genus" category (in this case Category:Caryophyllales genera). However, I can't find any agreement anywhere about the "monotypic" categories. Sometimes an article about a monotypic genus is categorized three ways: a "TAXON" category, a "TAXON genera" category, and a "Monotypic TAXON genera" category, other times the "TAXON genera" category is left off.

Do you know if this is explained anywhere? Is there a rationale for either choice? Peter coxhead (talk) 10:37, 21 September 2014 (UTC)

Removing taxon categories

When you add a category "TAXON genera", you shouldn't remove the plain "TAXON" category. For example, Parasitaxus should be in both Category:Podocarpaceae and Category:Podocarpaceae genera. This is clearly explained at WP:PLANTS#Articles and in more detail at WP:PLANTS/Categorization. Peter coxhead (talk) 07:16, 24 September 2014 (UTC)

You are still removing taxon categories. Please STOP! Peter coxhead (talk) 19:08, 27 September 2014 (UTC)
@Peter coxhead:, I have found that User:NotWith rarely replies to queries about editing behavior. This is frustrating and complicates collaboration and providing feedback for the editor. I've noticed this trend over many years, where NotWith will be asked to alter editing patterns with categories and fails to acknowledge or change the way s/he edits. In this instance, the behavior is disruptive and frequent enough to not be simple mistakes. NotWith has been asked to stop and provided a clear explanation. @NotWith:, if you do not stop removing taxon categories while running through the "Fooaceae genera" categories, you will be blocked from editing for a short time, not as a punitive measure but to protect the project from further disruptive edits. Peter, I will give NotWith some time to comply with this, but if you notice any further edits of this nature, let me know and I will apply the block. Thanks, Rkitko (talk) 23:41, 27 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Barnardia japonica, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Siyin. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Creating redirects

@NotWith: Please do not create redirects that are in foreign languages, such as 棉棗兒 and 绵枣儿, redirects you created that had Barnardia japonica as their target. This is the English language Wikipedia; any foreign language names not in common use in English are inappropriate as redirects or as article content. Other language interwiki links, now stored in WikiData, are the best means to link other languages.

On a related issue, I also deleted Albo-viridis, a redirect you created that also had Barnardia japonica as its target article. I understand that this is a variety epithet included in a synonym of the target article, but without the remainder of the synonym, the redirect is meaningless. Gastropods by country

Hello NotWith. One big problem with this category is that it only makes a (very slight) amount of sense for non-marine gastropods, and even not very much sense for them. Marine gastropods need to be categorized by marine faunal zone, not by country (think of Europe, so many countries, many with almost identical mollusk faunas. Also, a serious error: "Africa" is not a country; it is a continent. I would very much recommend that you ask the Gastropod Project for input before you create these categories and start to populate them. Invertzoo (talk) 23:56, 19 October 2014 (UTC)

Another note

If you had read the Gastropod Project page you would have seen that we specifically requested that Mollusks of New Zealand and Mollusks of Australia be eliminated as categories, and instead become list articles, backed up with the relevant sources of course. Warning

Please STOP creating inappropriate categories. There is a discussion going on about your behavior here and if you continue to create such categories without appropriate discussion, this might well end up at WP:ANI and you might be blocked from editing. You really must start communicating with other editors about your edits. Thanks. --Randykitty (talk) 16:11, 29 October 2014 (UTC)

Seconded. It is disruptive to create categories when similar ones have been deleted at cfd. (Eg Spiders of France was deleted in March 2014 and yet you created Category:Moths of Ivory Coast in Oct 2014.) Many of your category creations seem at best dubious to me. Oculi (talk) 18:25, 29 October 2014 (UTC)
You really do need to stop and discuss this, not just keep going making more and more categories that are inappropriate. Invertzoo (talk) 12:59, 30 October 2014 (UTC)
It's constructive to have disagreements about categorization with other editors. It is *not* constructive to keep on creating categories that you know are controversial as similar ones are deleted. Please join the conversations about your categories in the CFD discussions so we can discuss. RevelationDirect (talk) 00:48, 2 November 2014 (UTC)

What were you thinking?! (Do you know what "Tetrapod" means?)

In your edit of 07:11, 10 March 2014 of the Category:Birds of Israel, you changed its higher-level category from Category:Fauna of Israel to Category:Tetrapods of Israel. I just discovered this and reverted your edit using "Undo." Look up "tetrapod" in the dictionary to see why. Your User talk page indicates that you have some history of interfering with valid categories. A productive direction for your editing would be appreciated. -- Cheers, Deborahjay (talk) 21:04, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

I dont have to look at the dictionary. A look at the wikipedia article is enough to convince me that I am perfectly right on that point. Cheers --NotWith (talk) 04:28, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

Yes, scientifically "birds" are "tetrapods". The argument against having a category for tetrapods is different. Look at Category:Tetrapods by country. To be useful categories must be of a reasonable size (at least 10 entries is sometimes suggested). There aren't enough subcategories of tetrapods to make "Tetrapods of X" a viable category. All of them should be deleted, and would be I'm sure if anyone bothers to open the deletion discussion. Categorizing at the level of "Fauna of X" should be enough, although since most animals are not confined to one country, "X" should be a biogeographical region, not a country. Peter coxhead (talk) 08:04, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

Previous animals by country categories have been deleted when nominated. Clearly, some island countries are exceptions but this is not one of them. RevelationDirect (talk) 00:53, 2 November 2014 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. Proposed deletion of Clusii

The article Clusii has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

After removing the partial title matches, there is nothing left.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist.
