File permission problem with File:ABCmap.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:ABCmap.jpg, which you've attributed to Drury, George H. (1994). The Historical Guide to North American Railroads: Histories, Figures, and Features of more than 160 Railroads Abandoned or Merged since 1930. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Ninja Dianna (Talk) 20:27, 24 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Don't understand what you did at Cumberland Valley Railroad[edit]

From the diffs it looks like you deleted and added back every section - but that's just the way the software works sometime. I think you also added three lines (ok as far as I can tell), deleted 3,000 k of text (from where?) and took all the images from the text and put them in a gallery. I don't really like galleries, rather I think it is better to integrate images into the article where the subject is referred to (or nearby). If there is something about the picture placement that bothered you, please let me know, but I'll likely move the photos back into the text, once I figure out everything you did. Now if I can find the missing 3,000 k, I can properly evaluate the changes.

All the best.

Smallbones(smalltalk) 22:48, 8 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I am in the process of revising and streamlining many of the U.S. railroad articles. A great many of them have as many photos as text. Unless it is a large railroad like PRR, NYC or UP, excessive photos are better placed in a gallery. I did not deleted too much text but rather formatted it to confirm to Wikipedia standards so it is an easier read. The article needed extensive cleanup, as do many of the railroad articles. Oanabay04 (talk) 22:59, 8 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I don't think that there was an excessive amount of photos, rather just about everything was referred to in the text. You've taken out the section headings, which is unlikely to increase readability. Perhaps we could get a third opinion? Smallbones(smalltalk) 02:46, 9 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
An article the length of this does not require more than two photos + system map. The more significant the railroad, the more photos are warranted. A history as short as that of CVRR only warrants a simple header stating "History." A company more notable, like Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad or New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad, warrants subheaders and additional pictures. The CVRR article should reflect the simplicity of the New York, Ontario and Western Railway, Philadelphia and Erie Railroad or Unadilla Valley Railway. Hope this helps. Feel free to obtain a third opinion. Oanabay04 (talk) 14:05, 9 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I think I understand now what you are trying to do. It might be called "rationalizing text and image use across articles." So, for example, if you found that the article on Downtown Pittsburgh was larger or had more images than the article on Pittsburgh, you'd want to remove text or images from the Downtown Pittsburgh article because Pittsburgh is obviously more important. And according to your importance scale, CVRR should rate few or no images (note that 2 of your examples have no images).

I have to disagree with this philosophy; it's certainly not the way these things are usually handled on Wikipedia. For example, if somebody thought that it's a problem that the Downtown Pittsburgh article was larger than the Pittsburgh article, the usual solution would be to improve the Pittsburgh article, not remove material from Downtown Pittsburgh. Comparisons of importance or notability across articles is seldom, if ever, done. Each article stands on it own. I've looked for guidance in the usual places on how many pictures are too many - and really couldn't find anything except a brief "Images should not overwhelm the article", which doesn't apply here. The images certainly don't overwhelm this article. More directly the Manual of Style WP:IMAGE RELEVANCE states:

"Images must be relevant to the article that they appear in and be significantly and directly related to the article's topic. Because the Wikipedia project is in a position to offer multimedia learning to its audience, images are an important part of any article's presentation. Effort should therefore be made to improve quality and choice of images or captions in articles rather than favoring their removal, especially on pages which have few visuals."

I'll copy this to the CVRR talk page, and revert to the previous layout of the pix. If you'd like I can ask the opinion a 2 editors who are very familiar with Pennsylvania history articles, or you can ask for an RfC if you'd like. Smallbones(smalltalk) 17:38, 9 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

"rationalizing text and image use across articles." You got it. Now, for the sake of complete disclosure, I never like to remove any photos. I think they are all good and always help. But in the past, I have had many photos that I believed were helpful deleted by Wiki Administrators by reason of overkill. After a while, I started to see their point of view. It is tough not to write something we feel strongly about without injecting a fan-like enthusiasm to the text. What we don't want is for images to be stacked on one side one atop the other. The short text of CVRR will allow that. I am fine getting many opinions, though I suspect they will agree with me, as many have chopped at my articles. Better source request for File:Jock-mahoneycolour.jpg[edit]

Thanks for your upload to Wikipedia:

You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact Web page where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page or me at my talk page. Thank you. Message delivered by Theo's Little Bot (opt-out) 21:19, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Frankford El re-route[edit]

This is a non-Wikipedia question. If you'd like to contact me by e-mail, my address is verizon dot net preceded by johnbonaccorsi1. At http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Aerial_view_of_Market-Frankford_Line,_1978.jpg is a photograph of the rerouting of Philadelphia's Frankford El during the construction of Interstate 95 through Philadelphia. In the Wikipedia article about the El, the photograph's caption refers to the "1976" construction of I-95, but the info you've posted indicates the photograph is from 1978. I'd guess that means the rerouting of the El began in 1976 and lasted into 1978, at least.

I have a couple of questions:

1 – Nowadays, the El columns south from a little bit below Girard Avenue are not steel but concrete. Is that because of the rerouting? Your photograph seems to indicate, as I certainly would have guessed, that the original columns in that area were steel, like those of the rest of the El. I'd guess that when new columns were installed, during the rerouting, concrete was used.

2 – Do you have any idea of the start and finish dates of the rerouting? E.g., "1976 to 1979."

As I say, this is a non-Wikipedia question. I need the info for a family history.96.227.135.168 (talk) 01:21, 20 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Missing edit summaries[edit]

Hello. I notice that you have been making quite a few significant edits and deletions to a number of major railroad related articles in the last few days, however you are also doing so without including any edit summaries. This makes it very hard for other editors who watch these articles to follow what you are doing and/or what your rationale may be for deleting and/or altering so much often long standing material in these articles that been accepted by the community. It would be much appreciated if you would therefore follow this important editing convention and explaining what you are doing and why you are doing it. Failing to do so is likely to lead to other editors start reverting such wholesale changes in the absence of your providing any reason explaining why they were made. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Centpacrr (talk) 21:52, 21 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Quite true. I am guilty of occassionally forgetting to add rationale and edit sumamries. I have been actively trying to tighten text in a great many railroad-related articles. Many of them are unsourced, wordy, overly detailed, and — most notably — not encyclopedic. I will be more judicious in this practice. Thank you kindly for your message. Oanabay04 (talk) 22:43, 21 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your reply. I would suggest that if you find something that is unsourced, however, that does not necessarily mean that it is inaccurate and/or unencyclopedic and would suggest before doing wholesale deletions that you see if you can find a source yourself (you would be surprised what unexpected things you learn doing that) or mark it as "citation needed". I often do this myself and find it personally very enlightening. (I have had four books on North American railroad history published since 2005 and also operate a 10,000+ page railroad history site (CPRR.org) with my brother-in-law which has been on line since February 1999, so my interest in the subject is pretty intense.) Thanks. Centpacrr (talk) 23:26, 21 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
As a rule, I usually research unsourced material and add references instead of deleting the sentence outright. I will also add a "citation needed" if it appears to be important but I cannto find a reliable source. What I usually delete are poorly written sentences that are hyperbole or op-eds dressed up as fact. I looked at your User page; very impressive. I work for two railroads (Wellsboro & Corning) and I am on the board of several other railroad-related non-profit organizations (srrss.org) so I hear you on the intensity level. Your written works are superb. Thanx for contacting me. Oanabay04 (talk) 14:02, 23 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your kind words about my writing efforts and railroad research. You may also find of interest my photography work of railroad subjects many examples of which you can find here. I was interested to see your involvement with preserving the old Reading station in Southampton which is not far from where I grew up in Glenside, PA. While I have lived on the "Main Line" in Ardmore, PA (I am just a few blocks from the Ardmore train station) since 1972, I spent my youth riding the Reading commuter trains from the Glenside and Jenkintown stations to Reading Terminal in Philadelphia so know that line very well. You may also be interested in my online history of the Belfast & Moosehead Lake Railroad, a 142-year old short line in Waldo County, ME which I have been photographing and writing about for over 30 years which you can find here. Orphaned non-free media (File:AllentownJuly281979.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:AllentownJuly281979.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Werieth (talk) 03:22, 7 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Herculesstooge.jpg[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Herculesstooge.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. Question about copyright of File:ACLmapdrury.jpg[edit]

"and" vs. & in railroad company names[edit]

Hi. I've noticed you've changed a few ands to ampersands in railroad company names. I'm a fan of that, actually, but it was my general impression that "and" was favored over "&" on Wikipedia. What's your rationale for changing to &? 07:10, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi - I am not sure what the exact Wiki rules are for using "&" vs "and" in railway articles. The rule of thumb is that railroad company names are always written using &.Oanabay04 (talk) 19:20, 19 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
So I went looking a little harder, and found that Wikipedia:WikiProject Trains/Manual of style#Articles about rail transport companies (railroads) style guide says, "Article names [emphasis mine] should use the word "and" instead of an ampersand (such as Chicago and North Western Railway)." That's doesn't appear to be a blanket statement about all instances of railroad company names, but presumably other uses should follow the style for article names. PRRfan (talk) 20:49, 19 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This is a good find, PRRfan. I was guilty of using "&" in the title in the "Infobox SG rail" section. I will fix those. Otherwise, I will stick with using "&" where traditionally appropriate.Oanabay04 (talk) 15:38, 25 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal for the Creation of an Animation Barnstar[edit]

Hi, Oanabay04. I noticed that you are a member of the Animation WikiProject and wanted to share a proposal with you. There have been several times that I have wanted to award an Animation Barnstar to a fellow editor, only to be disappointed that one still doesn't exist. The closest thing that we have right now is the Film Barnstar, but this is only applicable in certain situations, since animation can be found in both film and television. I would like to see an Animation Barnstar become a reality; especially since one already exists for the sub-topic of Anime and Manga. In order for this to become official though, a consensus will have to be reached.

If this is something that you would be interested in supporting, then please let me know on my talk page, as I am sending this message to all of the members of the Animation WikiProject and will not be adding each editor's talk page to my watchlist.

I am also looking for someone who would be able to provide a design for the barnstar. If you have any ideas for this, then please do not hesitate to share them with me. :) --Jpcase (talk) 03:26, 8 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I Have Nominated you for Administratorship, Paul![edit]

Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Oanabay04 closure[edit]

Thanks for accepting your RfA submission. It's become apparent that consensus is unlikely to develop to support this request at this point in time. Suggestions have been made that the RfA be closed, which is what I've now done. If you disagree with this, please revert the close and/or approach any participant for advice. All the best with your continued editing, and please feel free to submit a future request when you feel ready. Thanks. -- Trevj (talk · contribs) 12:59, 24 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

No worries. I was going to withdraw today. Too many "admins" obsessed with an editor's errors instead of the good. If one is to judge a person's candidacy only on their errors and occasional lapses of judgement, then no one should be an admin. And yes, I did read the RfA requirements. It needs to be rewritten because it gives one false hope. Wikipedia Admins are indeed a cult and that is fine; just not one I would feel comfortable being of in retrospect. Thank you for the opportunity. Oanabay04 (talk) 14:43, 24 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding the assessment of errors etc. comments at RfA are made by any registered editor, not just existing admins. Yes, of course admins make mistakes too. But community consensus to give users access to the additional tools often revolves around how community members judge that users would react to various situations, the overall aim being protection of the project. I really don't think it's fair to describe admins as a cult; for example my own RfA was very recent and I think it unreasonable to conclude that its result was due to any cult influences. We've all made mistakes, but users are interested to see how potential admins handle such situations. I hope this is some help to you. If you still feel that it'd be handy for you to use the administrative tools, then I'd suggest you gain more experience in such areas and submit another request when you feel able to explain how the various points raised during the RfA have been addressed. Again, I'm fairly sure that any participant would be willing to provide a sentence or two of commentary on this. Anyone else reading this is at liberty to add their own comments here, as they see fit. All the best. -- Trevj (talk · contribs) 15:21, 24 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It is fine, really. I was surprised when a few Admins sais I did not contribute to mainframe articles, which is pretty much all I do. I admit I do need to become more familiar with some admin tools. I have been citing them more recently when making edits and suggestions. I will gladly answer any and all questions asked of me concerning the RfA. However, most objections came from Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mister Ed (Season 1). That was the first time I did an episode list. The User made a slew of false accusations, despite my attempts to fix the article and improve upon it. The whole thing was absurd and, frankly, turned me off to doing any considerable article creations for Wikipedia. The constant reiteration of the "User's temperment" shows the inherent laziness of the process. In my nine years, I had two incidents. If that is enough to have Admins repeat the same two issues, then I have no interest in being an Admin. It is obviously far from fair and balanced. It is also done in a very short span of time. I do not live and breathe Wiki like most Admins. The most rational response from anyone was "I am reluctant to oppose a candidate who has 34 thousand plus and 92%+ of all edits in mainspace." That is clearly the only one who took a larger view of things. Thank you for your help. Oanabay04 (talk) 00:45, 25 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:DHmapdrury.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:DHmapdrury.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Fut.Perf. 13:25, 24 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. It could be worth listing a request at WP:GL/MAP, where someone may offer to recreate a free equivalent. A link to the source would be required, and preferably a starting point from which to create the map, e.g. an existing free map (SVG format, preferably) on Commons. -- Trevj (talk · contribs) 15:00, 24 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

File source problem with File:Charlielaugh.jpg[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Charlielaugh.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.

If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Fut.Perf. 13:56, 24 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed non-free use rationale for three files[edit]

Hello. I wanted to let you know that I have tagged three files to indicate a concern with the non-free use rationale you provided for the article Laugh track.

In my opinion, the use in each case fails to satisfy non-free content criterion #8, in that the image does not significantly increase readers' understanding of the article topic "Laugh track". If you disagree, you are welcome to explain why, and I suggest the best place to do so would be on the talk page for each of the files. Thanks. – Wdchk (talk) 03:35, 18 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

New York, Ontario and Western Railway[edit]

Hi! I can see you've done a lot of work on New York, Ontario and Western Railway, but I have noticed that much of the article has been taken word-for-word from Drury's book, The Historical Guide to North American Railroads. This is a copyright violation even though it's footnoted. Wikipedia instructs users to delete this sort of thing when they find it, although that seems a bit brutal to me. Would you be willing to rewrite this so that it is a genuine paraphrase? (Changing a few words in each sentence would not be enough; you can use facts from Drury's book, but it ought to be entirely rewritten.) Canadian2006 (talk) 19:49, 28 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I had not realized I had done that, as I aimed to use the entry from Drury's book as a guide. Yes, I would be glad to rewrite the article. Thanks for catching that. Oanabay04 (talk) 02:18, 3 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Gutting articles[edit]

I fixed an article you gutted, Leonor F. Loree. Unquestionably, much of the previous article was improper, personalized notes and email addresses so tear out half of that material made perfect sense, but most of that is pretty easy to source as well as he is unquestionably a notable person and exactly the type we want articles on. Please be more selective when doing stuff like that. Facts that aren't really contentious and likely can be left in but tagged {{fact}}. Gutting it down to just a couple of lists isn't really helping the reader. Dennis - 15:16, 28 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I do not waste my time in edit wars when articles are reduced to a Grade 1 level, Mr. Laurent. WP:BLUE clearly states, particularly in photos, do not state the obvious. Disputed non-free use rationale for File:HRWT 1959 publicity.jpg[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:HRWT 1959 publicity.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy.

If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Diannaa (talk) 14:00, 12 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Block extended[edit]

Hello Onabay04. I have extended your block to two more weeks, as you have been evading your block by editing while logged out. While I am here, I want to tell you a bit about our non-free content requirements for images. For movie articles, we normally include a copy of the poster or lobby card in the info box, and that's all. We don't include additional non-free images unless they meet all ten of the non-free content requirements, which are listed at Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria#Policy. The still shots from the Stooges films don't meet these requirements, in particular failing #1 (the image has to tell us something that can't be described using words alone) and #8 (the image has to greatly increase our understanding of the subject of the article). This in an official Wikipedia policy, not a guideline, not a suggestion, so you should not be breaking this policy, and definitely should not be evading an block to do so. Continuing down your present course will likely lead to further and lengthier blocks. -- Diannaa (talk) 19:22, 12 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I have been evading my block? How so? I have not been on Wiki since the block nor do I intended to make any significant edits in the future. Photos are articles that have been created more than five years ago are now being chopped to shreds so why waste time? I did notice that other users have been restoring the extensive work that has been done. I would be glad to remove tons of pictures from movie pages that do not meet non-free content requirements since most of them have these. If Lugnuts Dick Laurent is dead is so convinced that all these unregistered users are making similar changes to articles that I have worked on, then maybe Wikipedia should either 1) rewrite their archaic photo rules 2) not allow unregistered users to make changes 3) not allow admins to take the ravings of a paranoid lunatic at face value and block users at random. If Lugnuts truly believes I am everywhere all at once (who has time for such frivolity?), then Wiki has a foolish cultish reputation it richly deserves. Thank you kindly.Oanabay04 (talk) 04:14, 13 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry you feel you have been treated unfairly. However, one of the IPs was the one recently blocked as a result of the sockpuppetry filing, and as soon as its block wore off it resumed the same activity that your named account had been pursuing. The other geolocates to the same geographic area, and was doing the same edits as well. If you feel Wikipedia's non-free content policy needs work, you are welcome to try to get it changed when your block expires. However, as this is a long-standing policy with legal considerations, change is unlikely. -- Diannaa (talk) 05:01, 13 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your response.Oanabay04 (talk) 15:42, 13 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You may have noticed me adding {{non-free reduce}} tags to some of your film poster images lately. This is just a coincidence, it's a routine maintenance task I have been working on lately, and is unrelated to your block. -- Diannaa (talk) 01:46, 14 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, no problem. Just so I am clear (as I want to do this right), I was under the impression that adding an overall Template:Non-free use rationale or one that was more specific like WP:TAGS/FU. Please advise if this will right at least part of the issue. I did notice that the unregistered user who restored most of the images revised the corresponding captions to make them more informative (#8 - the image has to increase our understanding of the subject of the article). Your thoughts. Thanks. Oshabuh (talk) 15:53, 14 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Adding informative captions or changing the templating on the file page does not solve the problem. While we do have the convention that a copy of the film poster should be used in the info box for films, and the album cover for records, there's no free pass to include a second non-free image. The image(s) need to be critically discussed in the body of the article, and pass along information that cannot be conveyed using words alone (WP:NFCC criterion #1). A minimum amount of non-free content needs to be used in each article (NFCC #3). Photos cannot be added purely for decoration, and must greatly increase our understanding of the subject of the article (NFCC #8).

A good example of effective use of non-free content is the article Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) (a featured article). There's two non-free files in the body of the article. The first is the sound file, File:Singleladies.ogg, which illustrates points made in the body of the article and also has an enlightening caption. The second non-free image is File:Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) screenshot.jpg, which is a screen shot from the music video. The text notes that the video has been compared by analysts to a famous Bob Fosse routine that was seen on the Ed Sullivan show (excerpts of the Ed Sullivan clip are available on YouTube if you are interested in comparing them yourself). Compare this usage to (for example) False Alarms (1936 film) and you will see the difference. --Diannaa (talk) 16:17, 14 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

This is quite embarrassing. I am now looking at this Oshabuh account. I regret to inform you that this is not me (Oanabay04) but rather is a co-worker who purposely created an additional account at the same company where I work. We both share the same IP address (66.161.120.11) as well, as do approximately 5,000 other employees. Please do not hesitate to retain the block on the Oshabuh and IP 66.161.120.11 accounts, as I suspect he will continue to wreak havoc on several articles I have worked on. (I see he took advantage of someone when restoring images on the laugh track, an article I contribute extensively to). Please alert me if I need to appeal this block at a high level. Again, my sincerest apologies. I suspect this is quite hard to stomach. Even I am beside myself with this. I may not agree with all of Wiki's photo policies but I do want to work to adhere to them. Sockpuppeting is not one of those ways. Thank you kindly.Oanabay04 (talk) 00:02, 15 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Not as good as what Wiki is best known for: WP:ROGUE. Throw in a little this [ http://www.dailydot.com/business/wikipedia-editors-decline-wikimedia-fellows/ Wikipedia losing editors]. I would think that Wiki would want to retain quality editors who may have an occasional lapse of judgement. Thank you kindly. Oanabay04 (talk) 06:19, 16 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Punchdrunks.jpg[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Punchdrunks.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy.

If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Diannaa (talk) 19:35, 12 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:Oldmoe75.jpeg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Oldmoe75.jpeg.

Thank you. Whpq (talk) 16:56, 30 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
